La banda finlandesa de Industrial Metal, Resolution 13 lanzó su nuevo álbum 'Derelict' el 23 de mayo a tráves de Sliptrick Records. Made in Metal habla con el cantante, Hardtone, y el baterista Dallas-13, para descubrir algunos detalles de este álbum y la historia de la banda. Al final de la entrevista tienes el disco completo a tu disposición para su escucha.

MiM: Me resulta curioso que hayan decidido formar una banda de Industrial Metal, ya que en Finlandia la mayoría de las nuevas formaciones optan por géneros más extremos y tradicionales del Metal. ¿Cómo surgió la idea de formar la banda y de dónde viene el nombre?

Hardtone: Bueno, tenemos que remontarnos mucho tiempo atrás, cuando Dallas13 formó una banda llamada 'Drive' en 1997. Drive adquirió su formación definitiva (Nico "Hardtone" Hartonen, Marko "Dallas13" Lehtinen, Erno "Euge" Valovirta, Jussi Pulkkinen, Ilkka "I.T." Tanska y Juha Terrilä) a principios de los años 2000 y lanzaron un álbum completo en 2004 llamado "1st Class Enemy", que también fue lanzado en Japón. En ese momento ya era industrial metal todo el camino. Hicimos un video musical haciendo un cover de la canción "Breathe" de Prodigy, que se puede encontrar en Youtube. Así que aquí tienes un pequeño resumen de cómo empezaron a moverse hacia R13. Eso incluye la separación de Drive en algún momento de 2007, lo cual también implicó cambios en los miembros, etc. Dallas13 tenía su maleta llena de canciones demo y como yo vivía al lado, Dallas me invitó a su casa para tomar sauna y tomar unas cervezas, y me mostró esas demos y me preguntó si estaba interesado en hacer las voces. Me dio total libertad y simplemente vacié mi cabeza en la demo de cuatro canciones. En aquellos días teníamos a Tony Buckman en la segunda guitarra y a Juha Terrilä en el teclado. Teníamos algunas ideas geniales para el nombre de esta nueva banda, pero al final fue fácil y sin dolor. Dallas13 quería que el nombre tuviera un número, así que partimos de ahí. La palabra "Resolution" no está relacionada con píxeles, pantallas ni nada parecido, sino que representa una DECISIÓN FIRME. Y luego simplemente añadimos nuestro número de la suerte después de eso ¡y listo! Resolution 13 estaba listo para conquistar el mundo. (risas)

MiM: 'Derelict' (Sliptrick Records, 2023) es un álbum increíble en cuanto a sonido. Al escucharlo siento una marcada influencia de bandas como White Zombie, Fear Factory y Rammstein. ¿Es así? ¿Cómo lo ven ustedes? ¿Qué nos pueden decir sobre este álbum?

Hardtone: ¡Gracias! Lo clavaste. Gracias a nuestros hermanos Tero "Max" Kostermaa y Euge Valovirta por la mezcla y a Jacob Hansen por la masterización. Dallas13 siempre ha sido un gran fanático de la música de Rob Zombie y también de Fear Factory, y todos amamos a Rammstein. Pero también nos gusta Devin Townsend, Vola, Leprous, Bring Me The Horizon, SleepToken, The Korea and Twelve Foot Ninja y Slayer.

Dallas13: ¡Gracias! "Derelict" es un gran álbum que, en nuestra opinión, va en la dirección correcta, su paisaje sonoro es enorme, algo que hemos estado buscando todo el tiempo. Se siente como si finalmente hubiéramos dado ese gran paso adelante y hemos logrado nuestro propio sonido que se puede escuchar en Derelict. Hemos evolucionado mucho durante este proceso y ¿quién sabe qué tan grande será nuestro sonido en el tercer álbum?.

MiM: Al escuchar el álbum siento una conexión entre todas las canciones. ¿"Derelict" es un álbum conceptual? ¿De qué tratan las canciones, líricamente hablando?

Hardtone: Así es. Derelict es un álbum conceptual que continúa la historia desde donde dejamos nuestro primer álbum (Colossal, 2015). A todos nos encanta la ciencia ficción y el espacio, así que accidentalmente creamos esta escena: Hay este colosal planeta prisión hecho por el hombre llamado "Resolution 13" donde se colocan a los humanos disidentes hasta que se les da vuelta (lavado de cerebro) para convertirlos en ciudadanos productivos nuevamente. ¡Espeluznante, ¿verdad? (risas) El año es 3013, 4 chicos escapan y comienzan una especie de fuga y así comienza la historia. Sé que no soy muy buen narrador de historias, porque no quiero hacer una narrativa real como las películas, sino ir más profundo en los sentimientos mientras suena una canción. Ya sea en un momento de batalla, estando solo en la inmensidad del espacio, extrañando a alguien o simplemente saliendo de una situación complicada. Diría que es una mezcla de fantasía y vida cotidiana real. Y como la vida en general, saltamos dentro y fuera de situaciones.

MiM: ¿Cómo les ha ido con la audiencia del metal? ¿Ha sido difícil para ustedes ingresar al circuito del metal como una banda de metal industrial?

Dallas13: Oh, ciertamente ha sido un camino difícil. En primer lugar, venimos de un país que tiene más bandas de metal que cualquier otro (por habitante, ¡yay!). Y nuestra música se aparta de la línea principal de lo que se reproduce en la radio, etc. Pero fuera de Finlandia ha sido una locura y los lugares han estado llenos. Los finlandeses son muy exigentes cuando se trata de música heavy metal, así que decidimos salir y obtener nuestro reconocimiento primero y luego volver a tocar para nuestros compatriotas cuando sea el momento adecuado.

MiM: ¿Creen que con Resolution 13 marcarán el comienzo para que más músicos apuesten por el metal industrial?

Hardtone: ¡Por supuesto! Nuestra música es para todos los que disfrutan de la música pesada sobre la marcha, o si necesitas un impulso extra en el gimnasio, el trabajo o donde sea. Ya tenemos a Turmion Kätilöt haciendo un buen trabajo en el extranjero y muchos otros también están en ascenso.

Dallas13: No creo que seamos solo una banda de metal industrial, sino también una banda con un estilo más similar a una banda sonora de películas, con una gran producción de fondos y paisajes sonoros. Una banda de metal industrial con un toque pegajoso. ¡Tenemos canciones que podrías poner en una discoteca y la gente se pondría a bailar sin parar! (risas).

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienen para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas para este año nuevo?

Hardtone: Bueno, solo una fiesta formal de preescucha en un bar local en el centro de Helsinki. Los fanáticos saben a dónde ir y cuándo, gracias a las redes sociales y nuestra representante de redes sociales, Julia. (¡Hola, Julia!) Solo tenemos un concierto principal programado para agosto, pero más fechas se anunciarán después de lanzar Derelict (23.5).

Finnish Industrial Metal band Resolution 13 release their new album 'Derelict' on May 23 under Sliptrick Records. Made in Metal talks with the singer, Hardtone, and the drummer Dallas-13 to find out everything about this album and the history of the band.

MiM: I find it curious that they have decided to form an Industrial Metal band, since in Finland most of the new formations decide for more extreme and traditional genres of Metal. How did the idea of forming the band come about and where did the name of the band come from?

Hardtone: Well, we have to go way back in time, where Dallas13 formed a band called ‘Drive’ in 1997. Drive got it’s final form in members (Nico “Hardtone” Hartonen, Marko “Dallas13” Lehtinen, Erno “Euge”Valovirta, Jussi Pulkkinen, Ilkka “I.T.” Tanska and Juha Terrilä) in the early 2000 and they released 1 full length album 2004 “1st Class Enemy” and it was also released in Japan. At that time it was already industrial metal all the way. We made a music video as a cover song of Prodigy’s “Breathe” which can be found on Youtube. So here is a little recap of how things got started to move towards R13. That includes the breaking up of Drive somewhere in 2007 which also included changes in members etc. Dallas13 had his trunk full of demo songs and as I lived next door, Dallas invited me over for some sauna and a few beers and he played those demos for me and asked if I was interested to do vocals on them. He gave me free hands and I just went and emptied my head on the 4 song demo. Those days we had Tony Buckman on the 2nd guitar and Juha Terrilä on the keyboard. We had some cool ideas for the name of this new band, but eventually, it was easy and painless. Dallas13 wanted the name to have a number, so we started from there. The word ”Resolution” is not related to pixels, screens, or such but a FIRM DECISION. And then we just added our lucky number after it and there we go! Resolution 13 was ready to take over the world! (Laughter).

MiM: "Derelict" (Sliptrick Records, 2023) is an amazing-sounding album. Listening to it I feel a marked influence from bands like White Zombie, Fear Factory and Rammstein. Is it so? How do you see it? What can you tell me about this album?

Hardtone: Thank you! You nailed it. Thanks to our brothers Tero ”Max” Kostermaa and Euge Valovirta for mixing and Jacob Hansen for mastering. Dallas13 has always been a huge fan of Rob Zombie’s Music and Fear Factory as well and we all love Rammstein. But we also like Devin Townsend, Vola, Leprous, Bring Me The Horizon, SleepToken, The Korea, and Twelve Foot Ninja. And Slayer.

Dallas13: Thanks! Derelict is a great album that is going in the right direction in our opinion, it’s soundscape is huge of which we’ve been after all the time. It feels like we’ve finally taken that one big step forward and we have achieved our own sound that can be heard on DERELICT. We have evolved a lot during this process and who knows how big our sound is on the 3rd album?.

MiM: Listening to the album I feel a connection between all the songs. "Derelict" is a concept album. What are the songs about, lyrically speaking?

Hardtone: That is correct. Derelict is a concept album that continues the story from where our first album (Colossal, 2015) left. We all love Sci-fi and space stuff, so we kinda accidentally created this scene around: There is this colossal man-made prison planet ”Resolution 13” where dissident humans are put to be, until they are turned around (brainwashed) into productive citizens again. Appalling, right? (laughs) The year is 3013, 4 guys break out and start some sort of getaway and the story begins. I know I’m not a very good storyteller, because I don’t want to make a real narrative like films have, but to go more deeper into feelings while a song is playing. Whether it is a battle moment, being alone in the vastness of space, missing someone or just getting out of a sticky situation. I would say that it’s all a mix of fantasy and real everyday life. And like life in general, we jump in and out of situations.

MiM: How did it go with the metal audience? Has it been difficult for you to enter the metal circuit as an Industrial Metal band?

Dallas13: Oh,it has surely been a rocky road. Firstly, we come from a country that has more metal bands than any other (per capita, yay!) And our music diverges from the main line of what is being played (radio etc) mostly. But outside Finland, it has been crazy and the venues have been packed. Finns are very demanding when it comes to heavy metal music, so we decided to get out and get our acceptance first and come back to play for our countrymen when the time rips.

MiM: Do you think that with Resolution 13 they mark the beginning for more musicians to bet on Industrial Metal?

Hardtone: Well of course! Our music is for everyone who enjoys heavy music on the go, or if you need a little extra boost in the gym, work, or where ever. We have Turmion Kätilöt doing really good work already overseas and many others bubbling under as well!

Dallas13: I don’t think that we are only an industrial metal band, but also a lot more ”film score”-like a band with big production backgrounds and soundscapes. An Industrial metal band with a groovy twist. We have songs that you could play in a disco and people would dance their asses off! (laughter).

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this Album? Concerts or tours scheduled in this new year?

Hardtone: Well, just a formal pre-listening party at local bar in Helsinki center. Fans know where to go and when, thanks to social media and our SoMe represental Julia. (Hi Julia!) We have only 1 headline show booked for August, but more dates are to be released after we release Derelict (23.5.).

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers

Dallas13: I am very pleased about this new album and I hope you all like it as much! Hope to see you all at our shows!

Hardtone: I feel truly relieved. The whole process of Derelict has been everything but an easy task, but it has taught us so much along the way and pointed our ship towards the course that we all have been after.
