El poderoso trío de rock canadiense Danko Jones, liderado por uno de los músicos más importantes del panorama del rock internacional de los últimos años, Danko Jones, lanzará su nuevo álbum “Electric Sounds” el próximo 15 de septiembre bajo el prestigioso sello AFM Records. Excelente oportunidad para que Made in Metal entreviste al bajista Joe Calabrese para conocer todos los detalles de este nuevo álbum y los próximos pasos de la banda.

MiM: "Electric Sounds" (AFM Records, 2023) es un álbum que suena increíble. Pura energía positiva para rockear y alegrar los corazones. ¿Qué puedes contarme sobre este álbum?

DJ: Gracias Raúl. Estamos muy contentos con este disco. Es nuestro undécimo álbum de estudio y estamos ofreciendo otra tanda de melodías de rock duro.

MiM: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación del álbum?

DJ: Eric Ratz produjo el álbum. Hicimos toda la preproducción a través de Internet, ya que todos estamos en diferentes lugares del mundo. Una vez que todas las canciones estuvieron juntas, Rich grabó la batería en Toronto. Danko también grabó guitarras y voces en Toronto. Y grabé el bajo en el estudio de mi casa en Finlandia.

MiM: "Guess Who's Back" es la primera pista de este álbum. Una pista poderosa, un grito de que estamos aquí. ¿Qué me puedes decir sobre este tema?

DJ: Es un track retrospectivo para nosotros. Tuvimos algunos ensayos en Berlín y queríamos recrear una canción que se pareciera a nuestra antigua canción “Cadillac”. Surgió un riff y a Danko se le ocurrió esa línea de apertura. Inmediatamente supe que era la canción de apertura del próximo álbum antes de que la canción estuviera terminada. Y el título es un poco irónico ya que nunca nos fuimos, pero volvemos por más todo el tiempo.

MiM: "Electric Sounds" es un disco de rock pero con unos riffs de guitarra rápidos y pegadizos muy cercanos al Punk. También siento que este álbum tiene una marcada influencia de bandas como Volbeat y los álbumes Load and Reload de Metallica. ¿Es tan? ¿Cómo lo ves?

DJ: Si sientes que esas son las influencias es probablemente porque son bandas que amas y escuchas y reconoces algunos de nuestros riffs en ellas. Lo cual es genial. Pero lo veo como un álbum punk y nuestras influencias son siempre las que han sido todos estos años: Thin Lizzy se encuentra con Kiss, Bad Brains y The Misfits.

DJ: Somos buenos amigos de todos ellos y les pedimos que aparecieran. En particular por la canción "Get High?" ¡Realmente quería que Damian fuera parte de la canción y funcionó muy bien!

MiM: Danko Jones es una banda que con esfuerzo y dedicación han formado un sonido propio y una propuesta única dentro de la escena del rock internacional. Me gustaría saber si desde un principio ya tuvieron muy claro el sonido que tendría la banda.

DJ: Las primeras canciones nuestras eran más ruff y más garage rock. Pero creo que hemos conservado esa ventaja y hemos apuntado el sonido más hacia el rock/punk y una vibra de rock clásico.

MiM: Has compartido escenario con grandes leyendas del panorama internacional. ¿Cómo describirías esas experiencias? ¿Con quién te gustaría compartir escenario?

DJ: Me encantaría tocar con AC/DC. Y sí, hemos tenido mucha suerte tocando con bandas como GNR, Ozzy y, en particular, de gira con Motorhead. Aprendimos mucho de la gira con Lemmy y compañía. Somos Danko Jones, tocamos rock n roll.

MiM: Son una banda fundada en 1996 con varios discos, giras, conciertos en todos estos años. Si tuvieras que juzgar críticamente la trayectoria de la banda, ¿qué les dirías a nuestros lectores?

DJ: El rock n roll está destinado a ser divertido. Hemos tratado obstinadamente de no cambiar eso. 

DJ: “Electric Sounds” tiene una sensación más punk en general en el álbum. Pero ambos todavía suenan como Danko Jones.

MiM: Una vez que el álbum esté disponible para todos los fans de la banda, ¿qué planes tienes para promocionarlo?

DJ: Sí, promoción en septiembre y muchas giras. Esté atento al vídeo "Get High?"

The powerful Canadian rock trio Danko Jones, led by one of the most important musicians on the international rock scene in recent years, Danko Jones, will release their new album "Electric Sounds" on September 15 under the prestigious AFM Records label.  Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to interview the bass player Joe Calabrese to find out all the details of this new album and the band's next steps.

MiM: "Electric Sounds" (AFM Records, 2023) is an amazing-sounding album! Pure positive energy to rock and brighten hearts. What can you tell me about this album?

DJ: Thank you Raul.  We are very happy with this record.  It is our 11th studio album and we are serving up yet another batch of hard-rocking tunes.

MiM: How was the process of recording the album? 

DJ: Eric Ratz produced the album.  We did all the pre-production over the Internet as we are all in different places in the world.  Once all the songs were together, Rich recorded the drums in Toronto.  Danko recorded guitars and vocals in Toronto as well.  And I recorded the bass in my home studio in Finland.

MiM: "Guess Who's Back" is the first track on this album. A powerful track, a cry that we are here. What can you tell me about this topic?

DJ: It is a throwback track in ways for us.  We had some rehearsals in Berlin and wanted to recreate a song that resembles our old tune “Cadillac”.  A riff came up and Danko came up with that opening line.  Right away I knew it was the opening track of the upcoming album before the song was done. And title is a little ironic as we never went away, but we are back for more all the time.

MiM: "Electric Sounds" is a rock album with some catchy and fast guitar riffs very close to Punk. I also feel this album has a marked influence from bands like Volbeat and Metallica's Load and Reload albums. Is it so? How do you see it?

DJ: If you feel that those are the influences it is probably because those are bands you love and listen to and recognize some of our riffs in them.  Which is great.  But I see it as a punk album and our influences are always what they have been all these years really, Thin Lizzy meets Kiss meets Bad Brains and The Misfits. 

DJ: We are good friends with all of them and asked them to appear.  In particular for the song “Get High?” I really wanted to have Damian part of the song and it worked great!

MiM: Danko Jones is a band that with effort and dedication has formed their own sound and a unique proposal within the international rock scene. I would like to know if from the beginning they were already very clear about the sound that the band would have.

DJ: The earlier songs of ours were more ruff and more garage rock. But I believe we have retained that edge and have aimed the sound more towards rock /punk and a classic rock vibe.

MiM: You have shared the stage with great legends of the international scene. How would you describe those experiences? With whom would you like to share the stage?

DJ: I would love to play with AC/DC. And yes we have been very lucky playing with bands like GNR, Ozzy, and in particular touring with Motorhead. We learned so much from touring with Lemmy and the company.  We are Danko Jones, we play rock n roll.

MiM: They are a band founded in 1996 with several albums, tours, and concerts in all these years. If you were to critically judge the trajectory of the band, what would you say to our readers?

DJ: Rock n roll is meant to be fun.  We have stubbornly tried to not change that. 

DJ: “Electric Sounds” has more of a punk feel overall to the album.  But they both still sound like Danko Jones

MiM: Once the album is available to all the fans of the band, what plans do you have to promote it? 

DJ: Yes promotion in September and lots of touring. Please keep an eye out for the video “Get High?”
