La banda alemana de Heavy Metal Skull & Crossbones acaba de lanzar su álbum debut 'Sungazer' con el sello Massacre Records. Tobi Kipp (guitarra) y Tobi Hübner (voz) hablan con Made in Metal sobre este momento.

MiM: Skull & Crossbones es una banda joven, pero con músicos experimentados de bandas como Stormwitch, Tyrant, Forensick y otras. ¿Cuéntanos sobre los inicios de la banda?

(Tobi K.) No es ningún secreto que dentro de Stormwitch siempre ha habido desacuerdos dentro de la banda en los últimos años. Tampoco quiero insistir más en eso. Volker, Wanschi, Marc y yo siempre nos hemos llevado bien. La decisión tras el descanso se tomó rápidamente. Definitivamente queríamos continuar juntos y queríamos volver a donde podamos lanzar un álbum y tocar juntos. Skull & Crossbones nació de esta decisión. Algunos probablemente sepan que "Skull & Crossbones" es una canción del primer álbum de Stormwitch, "Walpurgis Night". El nombre era adecuado para nosotros y, además de nuestro nuevo material, también tocamos en directo canciones de los primeros cuatro álbumes de Stowrmwitch. Pero esto pasará a un segundo plano en un futuro próximo, ya que queremos centrarnos en nuestro propio material.

MiM: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de firma con Masacre Records?

(Tobi K.) El álbum de Stormwitch "Bound to the Witch", que se lanzó en 2018, salió a través de Massacre Records. Entonces estábamos muy satisfechos, al igual que el sello, así que nada se interpuso en el camino para volver a trabajar juntos.

MiM: “Sungazer” (Masacre Records, 2023) es un álbum con un sonido que me recuerda a los clásicos de los 80. ¡Metal pesado clásico!

(Tobi H.) En primer lugar, gracias por tu cumplido. Estamos muy contentos de escuchar eso, especialmente de que lo que intentamos transmitir también sea bien recibido. Creo que la descripción encaja bastante bien; Queríamos transportar el heavy metal clásico de los 80 con grandes melodías y estribillos pegadizos al tiempo actual y equiparlo con un sonido moderno pero clásico. Creo que lo hicimos bastante bien. Algunas de las demos instrumentales ya estaban allí antes de que me uniera en diciembre de 2022. Los chicos gradualmente pusieron a mi disposición sus demos y luego comencé a trabajar en los arreglos vocales y las letras para luego grabar todo. Este proceso duró hasta finales de marzo de 2023, cuando las 10 canciones estuvieron listas. Las grabaciones luego fueron para Marc Ayerle de Klang Manufaktur, quien ya fue responsable del sonido del último álbum de Stormwitch, "Bound to the Witch". En general, fue una colaboración muy profesional entre la banda y también con Marc.

MiM: Tobi, ¡eres un vocalista excepcional! Alto rango vocal capaz de explotar el alma de los fans del Heavy Metal. ¿Cuál es el secreto para mantenerse en forma? ¿Tienes formación académica o es empírica?

(Tobi H.) Gracias por las palabras, por supuesto que me siento muy honrado. Sinceramente, no tengo muchos secretos, no bebo té de jengibre antes de los conciertos o antes de grabar, no hago calentamiento porque de todos modos he estado hablando todo el día. Recibí lecciones de canto durante medio año para mejorar mi respiración. Aparte de eso, simplemente canto como creo que está bien hecho.

MiM: A veces en "Sungazer" el riff de guitarra me recuerda a bandas como Iron Maiden, Judas Priest y Metal Church. ¿Es tan?

(Tobi K.) No podemos ocultar nuestras influencias musicales del Heavy Metal clásico. Por supuesto, esto se refleja en nuestra composición. Al principio, Volker y yo empezamos a escribir canciones e intercambiamos ideas. No había ningún concepto predeterminado. Después de que Tobi Hübner se uniera a nosotros, estábamos seguros de en qué dirección debían ir las canciones.

MiM: ¡"Live Your Dreams" es una balada excelente! Contiene todos los elementos compositivos, musicalmente hablando, para ser un completo éxito. ¿Qué me puedes contar sobre este maravilloso tema?

(Tobi H.) Estaba brutalmente de humor para una balada, realmente clásica al estilo de los 80. No es cursi, pero sigue siendo agradable y pegadizo. Tengo la opinión de que una balada es simplemente perfecta, hermosa o horrible, y a menudo no hay mucho en el medio. Pero nos atrevimos y salió algo realmente genial. 

(Tobi K.) ¡También queremos ampliar nuestra audiencia femenina!

MiM: ¿Cómo se da el proceso creativo en la banda a la hora de componer, estructurar y decidir qué canciones o composiciones formarán parte de un álbum? ¿Es un proceso colaborativo?

(Tobi K.) Hasta ahora, Volker, el otro guitarrista de la banda, o yo teníamos una idea básica, que luego trabajamos hasta que la canción instrumental de demostración estuvo lista. Wanschi luego trabajó en los arreglos del bajo, Marc en la batería y Tobi H. en los arreglos vocales, incluidos los coros. Esto resultó en una canción de demostración que luego se envió al estudio de Marc Ayerle para su posterior procesamiento.

MiM: Me encanta el arte de la portada del álbum. ¿Con quién trabajaste?

(Tobi H.) Gracias, queríamos una portada ligeramente diferente a la de la mayoría de las bandas de metal. También queríamos una portada que coincidiera con el título del álbum "Sungazer". Con Michael Vetter, que también fue responsable de nuestros vídeos, tuvimos a nuestro lado al hombre perfecto para la implementación.

MiM: "Skull & Crossbones" es claramente una banda con futuro por delante. El profesionalismo y el enfoque de la banda están más que latentes. ¿Dónde te ves en cinco años?

(Tobi K.) Definitivamente queremos grabar más álbumes, pasar un buen rato con nuestros fans en nuestros conciertos y simplemente divertirnos. Esa tiene que ser la prioridad a la hora de hacer música.

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?

(Tobi H.) Por supuesto, tocaremos algunos conciertos seleccionados en el momento del lanzamiento, incluida nuestra fiesta de lanzamiento en Gerstetten, la ciudad natal de la banda. También esperamos con ansias un concierto en diciembre junto con bandas de las que somos amigos como Vanish.

German Heavy Metal band Skull & Crossbones will release their debut album "Sungazer" on the Massacre Records label on September 8th. Tobi Kipp (Guitar) & Tobi Hübner (Vocals) talk to Made in Metal about this moment. 

MiM: Skull & Crossbones is a young band, but with experienced musicians from bands like Stormwitch, Tyrant, Forensick and others. Tell us about the beginnings of the band? 

(Tobi K.) It's no secret that within Stormwitch there have been disagreements within the band in recent years. I don't want to dwell any further on that either. Volker, Wanschi, Marc and I have always gotten along well. The decision after the break was made quickly. We definitely wanted to continue together and we wanted to get back to where we can release an album and play gigs together. Skull & Crossbones was born out of this decision.Some probably know that "Skull & Crossbones" is a song from the first Stormwitch album "Walpurgis Night". The name was right for us and in addition to our new material, we also play songs from the first four Stowrmwitch albums live. But this will take a back seat in the near future as we want to focus on our own material.

MiM: How was the signing process with Masacre Records?

(Tobi K.) The Stormwitch album "Bound to the Witch" which was released in 2018 came out via Massacre Records. We were very satisfied at the time, as was the label, so nothing stood in the way of working together again.

MiM: “Sungazer” (Masacre Records, 2023) is an album with a sound that reminds me of the classics of the 80s. Classic Heavy Metal! 

(Tobi H.) First of all, thank you for your compliment. We are very happy to hear that, especially that what we tried to get across is also well received. I think the description fits it quite well; we wanted to transport classic heavy metal from the 80s with big melodies and catchy choruses into the current time and equip it with a modern, yet classic sound. I think we did that quite well. Some of the instrumental demos were already there before I joined in December 2022. The guys gradually made their demos available to me, and I then started to work out the vocal arrangements and the lyrics in order to record everything. This process lasted until the end of March 2023, when all 10 songs were ready. The recordings then went to Marc Ayerle from Klang Manufaktur, who was already responsible for the sound on the last Stormwitch album "Bound to the Witch".Overall it was a very professional collaboration between the band and also with Marc.

MiM: Tobi, you are an exceptional vocalist! High vocal range capable of exploiting the soul of Heavy Metal fans. What is the secret to staying in shape? Do you have academic training or is it empirical?

(Tobi H.) Thank you for the words, I am of course very honored. I honestly don't really have many secrets, I don't drink ginger tea before gigs or before recording, I don't warm up as I've been talking all day anyway. I had singing lessons for half a year to improve my breathing. Other than that, I just sing the way I think it's done right.

MiM: Sometimes in "Sungazer" the guitar riff reminds me of bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Metal Church. Is it so? 

(Tobi K.) We can`t hide our musical influences of classic Heavy Metal. Of course, this is reflected in our songwriting. In the beginning, Volker and I started to write songs and exchange ideas. There was no predetermined concept. After Tobi Hübner joined us, we were sure in which direction the pieces should be.

MiM: "Live Your Dreams" is an excellent ballad! It contains all the compositional elements, musically speaking, to be a complete success. What can you tell me about this beautiful theme?

(Tobi H.) I was brutally in the mood for a ballad, really classic in the style of the 80s. Not cheesy, but still lovely and catchy. I have the opinion that a ballad is either just perfect, and beautiful or awful, there is often not much in between. But we dared and something really great came out of it.

(Tobi K.) We also want to expand our female audience!

MiM: How does the creative process take place in the band when it comes to composing, structuring, and deciding which songs or compositions will be part of an album? Is it a collaborative process?

(Tobi K.) So far, either Volker, the other guitarist in the band, or I had a basic idea, which we then worked out until the demo instrumental song was ready. Wanschi then worked out his bass arrangement, Marc his drums, and Tobi H. the whole vocal arrangements including the whole backing vocals. This resulted in a demo song which was then sent to Marc Ayerle's studio for further processing.

MiM: I love the artwork on the album cover. Who did you work with?

(Tobi H.) Thanks, we wanted a slightly different cover than the majority of most metal bands. We also wanted a cover that goes with the album title "Sungazer". With Michael Vetter, who was also responsible for our videos, we had the perfect man at our side for the implementation.

MiM: Skull & Crossbones is clearly a band with a future ahead. The band's professionalism and focus are more than latent. Where do you see yourself in five years?

(Tobi K.) We definitely want to record more albums, have a great time with our fans at our concerts, and just have fun. That has to be the priority when making music.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? 

(Tobi H.) Of course, we played a few selected concerts around the time of the release, including our release party in Gerstetten, the hometown of the band. We are also looking forward to a concert in December together with bands we are friends of like Vanish.
