La brasileña Lari Basilio, es una de las guitarristas más interesantes e importantes de los últimos años, con miles de seguidores se ha posicionado como una de las mayores exponentes del instrumento a nivel internacional. Made in Metal habla con ella para conocer su historia y sus próximos pasos en lo que resta del año.

MiM: Para empezar, haciendo un poco de historia y mirando hacia atrás, cuéntame ¿cuáles fueron tus primeros pasos en la música? ¿Y por qué te decidiste por la guitarra eléctrica?

LB: Para mí la música empezó en casa. A mi papá le encanta la música y crecí escuchándolo tocar su guitarra acústica, así que él es mi primera influencia. Pero la guitarra no fue mi primer instrumento. Empecé a tocar el órgano cuando tenía cuatro años. Luego, más tarde, mi papá me enseñó mis primeros acordes en la guitarra acústica y me enamoré del instrumento. Unos años más tarde pasé a la guitarra eléctrica y comencé a tomar lecciones con algunos profesores privados de mi ciudad natal, São Paulo, Brasil.

MiM: ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de tus primeros conciertos?

LB: ¡Grandes recuerdos! ¡Cada momento fue tan especial y aprendí mucho! Estar en el escenario siempre me ha traído muchas emociones y sabía que esto era algo que quería hacer por el resto de mi vida. Hasta el día de hoy siento las mismas emociones cada vez que estoy en el escenario y no quiero perder eso nunca.

MiM: Lari, ganaste en la categoría instrumental en el Samsung E-Festival en 2014 y actuaste ante una multitud de 15.000 personas junto a Keb' Mo' y Quinn Sullivan en el Samsung Best of Blues Festival en Brasil. ¿Cómo recuerdas ese momento? ¿Cuál fue tu reacción cuando te concedieron el premio?

LB: ¡Fue una experiencia increíble actuar ante esa increíble multitud en Brasil junto a artistas tan increíbles! Me sentí muy feliz y honrada de haber ganado este festival. En ese momento yo apenas comenzaba mi viaje instrumental solista así que fue un momento muy especial y definitivamente algo que me motivó a seguir adelante.

MiM: ¿Has tenido la oportunidad de tocar con grandes músicos, pero me gustaría que me contaras sobre la experiencia junto a la leyenda Joe Satriani cuando recién te invitó a ser parte del G4 Experience 2019? ¿Cómo fue ese primer encuentro con la profesora?

LB: ¡Joe Satriani es mi héroe de la guitarra! Recuerdo haber escuchado sus canciones de camino a mis lecciones de guitarra, así que cuando recibí la invitación para ser parte de G4 Experience, ¡fue totalmente alucinante! Joe es uno de esos músicos que cambió el juego y es una inspiración para mí y para muchos guitarristas. ¡Fue un gran honor conocerlo en persona en su increíble evento y ver que la leyenda también es un ser humano increíble!

MiM: El álbum más reciente de Lari Basilio, “Your Love”, fue lanzado el año pasado y debutó en la cima de las listas de iTunes Rock en todo el mundo. El álbum vuelve a contar con Vinnie Colaiuta (batería), y también con los bajistas Sean Hurley y Leland Sklar, y Ester Na (teclados y piano). ¿Qué puedes contarme sobre este disco? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción? ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la producción?

LB: Este álbum es una colección de melodías edificantes y emotivas que creo que capturan mi pasión por escribir música instrumental. “Your Love” trata sobre el amor de Dios y cómo llena mi vida de esperanza y alegría, y espero que los oyentes puedan experimentar lo mismo.

Yo misma produje el álbum y también escribí todas las canciones. Reuní a algunos de mis músicos favoritos del planeta para que se unieran a mí en este proyecto y ¡lo hicieron absolutamente genial! ¡Fue un gran placer contar con cada uno de ellos y dieron vida a mis composiciones de una manera muy especial con brillantes interpretaciones!

MiM: ¿Crees que tu línea de trabajo sólo está dirigida a la música instrumental? ¿Has recibido alguna oferta de trabajo en una banda en todos tus años?

LB: Me encanta hacer música instrumental y quiero seguir haciéndolo. Ya he tocado en algunas bandas y también he realizado giras con algunos artistas. Si surge algo más que resuene conmigo, podría considerarlo, pero de cualquier manera nunca dejaré de escribir mi propia música instrumental.

MiM: Te mencionaré a tres guitarristas y tú me dirás qué piensas de su trabajo. Orianthi, Nita Strauss y Jennifer Batten.

LB: ¡Guitarristas absolutamente brillantes e inspiradores! ¡Jennifer Batten fue probablemente la primera que vi y me dejó boquiabierto con su técnica y tono! Nita Strauss es una fuerza de la naturaleza, ¡siempre con actuaciones hábiles y poderosas! ¡Orianthi es una guitarrista con tanta clase y con mucho sentimiento! ¡Nada más que mucho respeto y admiración por cada uno de ellos!

MiM: En tu carrera has tocado en el estudio con varias guitarras. ¿Cuáles son esas guitarras que guardas por los recuerdos que te traen? ¿Cuáles son las guitarras que coleccionáis como dioses? ¿Y cuál es tu favorito actualmente?

LB: He tocado muchas guitarras diferentes a lo largo de los años y a partir de ahí acabé aprendiendo lo que realmente me gustaba de la guitarra. Ibanez me construyó la guitarra de mis sueños, la Ibanez LB1, y esa es la única guitarra que uso todo el tiempo ahora, no solo porque es mi guitarra distintiva, , sino porque realmente es una guitarra que cubre todas mis necesidades como guitarrista. Es un instrumento increíble, súper versátil y cómodo de tocar. Me siento honrado de trabajar con Ibanez y también con Seymour Duncan, quienes desarrollaron las pastillas exclusivas que tengo en mi guitarra.

MiM: Muchos lectores seguramente se preguntarán qué marcas de guitarra utilizas, pedales y monitores.

LB: Guitarra, uso mi guitarra exclusiva Ibanez LB1, cargada con mis pastillas exclusivas de Seymour Duncan. Para los amplificadores, utilizo algunos de los amplificadores de Laney Amplification como el Lionheart L20H, el Cube SuperTop y el Ironheart, que, por cierto, son fantásticos para el rock. MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo a la hora de componer material nuevo?

LB: No tengo reglas. Simplemente lo dejo fluir según mi estado de ánimo, mis sentimientos. Cada canción tiene su propia historia y será diferente cada vez. Una nueva canción puede partir de un riff, de un pequeño lick, de una idea en mi cabeza, etc. Es un proceso sorprendente y eso es lo que más me gusta de él.

MiM: Al parecer hay una tendencia de muchos artistas que se inclinan por publicar varios lanzamientos en formato single que luego se recopilan en un álbum. ¿A qué crees que se debe esto?

LB: Es una estrategia de marketing. Quizás sea una forma de llamar más la atención sobre esa pieza musical específica. Mucha gente no escucha álbumes completos. Como artista, creo que es importante probar y ver qué funciona mejor para cada artista y su audiencia.

MiM: La guitarra instrumental ha estado tradicionalmente dominada por los hombres. ¿Crees que esto está cambiando?

LB: En los últimos años las mujeres se han mostrado más interesadas en tocar instrumentos musicales, no sólo la guitarra. Así que, naturalmente, veremos cada vez más mujeres tocando instrumentos en general.

MiM: Ha pasado un año desde tu último sello discográfico. ¿Cuándo podrán tus fans escuchar material nuevo?

LB: ¡He estado escribiendo un nuevo álbum y no puedo esperar para compartirlo! Pero quiero lanzar nueva música antes de que termine este año, ¡así que estad atentos!

MiM: ¿Qué músico o banda brasileña recomiendas escuchar?

LB: Una de mis bandas brasileñas favoritas es Oficina G3. ¡Es rock con un gran mensaje y solos de guitarra increíbles! ¡Échale un vistazo!

The Brazilian Lari Basilio, is one of the most interesting and important guitarists of the years, with thousands of followers she has positioned herself as one of the greatest exponents of the instrument internationally. Made in Metal talks to her to find out her story and her next steps in the remainder of the year.

MiM: To start by doing a little history and looking back, tell me what were your first steps in music? And why did you decide on the electric guitar?

LB: Music for me started at home. My dad loves music and I grew up listening to him playing his acoustic guitar, so he is my very first influence. But the guitar was not my first instrument. I started playing organ when I was four years old. Then later on, my dad taught me my first chords on the acoustic guitar and I fell in love with the instrument. A few years later I moved to the electric guitar and started taking lessons with some private teachers of my hometown São Paulo, Brazil.

MiM: What memories do you have of your first concerts?

LB: Great memories! Every moment was so special and I learned a lot! Being on the stage has always brought me so many emotions, and I knew this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. To this day I feel the same emotions every time I’m on stage and I don’t ever want to lose that.

MiM: Lari you won in the instrumental category at the Samsung E-Festival in 2014 and performed to a crowd of 15,000 alongside Keb' Mo' and Quinn Sullivan at the Samsung Best of Blues Festival in Brazil. How do you remember that moment? What was your reaction when you were awarded the prize?

LB: It was such an incredible experience to perform to that amazing crowd in Brazil along with such amazing artists! I was so happy and honored to have won this festival. At that time I was beginning my solo instrumental journey so it was a very special moment and definitely something that motivated me to keep going.

MiM: You have had the opportunity to play with great musicians, but I would like you to tell me about the experience together with the legend Joe Satriani when you were just invited by him to be part of the G4 Experience 2019. How was that first meeting with the teacher?

LB: Joe Satriani is my guitar hero! I remember listening to his songs on the way to my guitar lessons, so when I got the invite to be part of the G4 Experience it was totally mind-blowing! Joe is one of the players who changed the game and is an inspiration to me and so many guitar players. It was such an honor to meet him in person at his incredible event and see that the legend is a fantastic human being as well!

MiM: Lari Basilio's most recent album, “Your Love”, was released last year and debuted at the top of the iTunes Rock Charts around the world. The album once again features Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), and also bassists Sean Hurley and Leland Sklar, and Ester Na (keyboards and piano). What can you tell me about this record? How was the recording and production process? Who was in charge of the production?

LB: This album is a collection of uplifting and emotional tunes that I believe capture my passion for writing instrumental music. “Your Love” is about God's love and how it fills my life with hope and joy, and I hope the listeners can experience the same.

I produced the album myself and wrote all the tunes too. I gathered some of my favorite musicians on the planet to join me on this project and they absolutely killed it! It was such a pleasure to have each of them and they brought to life my compositions in a very special way with brilliant performances!

MiM: Do you think that your line of work is only aimed at instrumental music? Have you received a job offer in a band in all your years?

LB: I love doing instrumental music and I want to keep doing it. I’ve already played in some bands and also toured with some artists. If something else that resonates with me comes along the way, I might consider it, but either way, I’ll never stop writing my own instrumental music.

MiM: I will mention three guitarists and you will tell me what you think of their work. Orianthi, Nita Strauss, and Jennifer Batten.

LB: Absolutely brilliant and inspiring players! Jennifer Batten was probably the first female player that I watched and blew me away with her technique and tone! Nita Strauss is a force of nature, always with skilled and powerful performances! Orianthi is such a classy player with so much feel! Nothing but so much respect and admiration for each one of them!

MiM: In your career, you have played in the studio with various guitars. What are those guitars that you keep for the memories they bring you? What are the guitars that you collect like gods? Which one is your current favorite?

LB: I have played many different guitars over the years and from that I ended up learning what I really liked on a guitar. Ibanez built me my dream guitar - the Ibanez LB1 - and that’s the only guitar that I use all the time now, not just because it’s my signature guitar, but because it’s truly a guitar that meets all my needs as a guitar player. It’s an amazing instrument, super versatile and comfortable to play. I feel honored to be working with Ibanez and also Seymour Duncan, who developed my signature pickups that are in my guitar.

MiM: Many readers will surely wonder what brands of guitar you use, pedals, and monitors.

LB: Guitar, I use my signature guitar Ibanez LB1, loaded with my signature Pickups by Seymour Duncan. For amps, I use some of the amps from Laney Amplification like the Lionheart L20H, Cube SuperTop, and the Ironheart, which are great for rock by the way. As fas as pedals, I use many different ones, but I can mention some of my favorites like the Secret Path reverb from Black Country Customs, the Delay Analog Tap Tempo from GNI Music and the Morning Glory drive by JHS pedals.

MiM: How is the creative process when composing new material?

LB: I have no rules. I just let it flow according to my mood, and my feelings. Each song has its own story and it’s going to be different every time. A new song could start from a riff, from a small lick, from an idea in my head, etc. It’s a surprising process and that’s what I love the most about it.

MiM: Apparently there is a tendency of many artists who are inclined to publish several releases in a single format that are later compiled in an album. What do you think this is due to?

LB: It’s a marketing strategy. Maybe it’s a way to draw more attention to that specific piece of music. Many people don’t listen to full albums. As an artist, I think it’s important to try out and see what works best for each artist and their audience.

MiM: Instrumental guitar has traditionally been dominated by men. Do you think this is changing?

LB: Women in the last years have been more interested in playing musical instruments - not only the guitar. So naturally we’re going to see more and more women playing instruments in general.

 MiM: It's been a year since your last record label. When will your fans be able to hear new material?

LB: I’ve been writing a new album and I can’t wait to share! But, I wanna release new music before the end of this year, so stay tuned!

MiM: What Brazilian musician or band do you recommend listening to?

LB: One of my favorite Brazilian bands is Oficina G3. It’s rock with a great message and amazing guitar solos! Check it out!

MiM: What concert plans or tours are scheduled for the rest of the year?
