La veterana banda neoyorquina de Heavy Metal The Rods volvió a la carga con un nuevo álbum titulado “Rattle the Cage” que fue lanzado el pasado 19 de enero bajo el prestigioso sello discográfico Massacre Records. Excelente oportunidad para conversar con David Rock Feinstein, vocalista y guitarrista, y el afamado batería Carl Canedy .
MiM: “Rattle the Cage” (Massacre Records, 2024) es un álbum clásico de Heavy Metal con un sonido moderno bien ejecutado. Potencia, fuerza y coraje son las características de este álbum. ¿Qué puedes contarme sobre este álbum?
TR: Poder, fuerza y coraje. Me gustan esas características. El álbum es solo eso. Es una excelente combinación de nosotros tres, todos representando lo que es el álbum. Los tres encajamos muy bien y el sonido del proyecto terminado realmente lo demuestra. Las canciones son poderosas y pesadas, pero melódicas y más maduras que los álbumes anteriores de The Rods. Dicho esto, estamos muy contentos con el resultado final y las fantásticas críticas que estamos recibiendo.

MiM: El enfoque lírico de este álbum me recuerda la composición de la leyenda Ronnie James Dio, primo tuyo. Eres el líder, fundador, guitarrista y vocalista de la banda. ¿Es así?
TR: Ronnie siempre ha sido una gran inspiración para mí y creo que para todos nosotros. Ronnie fue un letrista, compositor y narrador de historias increíble. Sus letras realmente significaban algo, y en estas canciones quería que mis letras también significaran algo. Algo con lo que los oyentes puedan identificarse y también inspirarse. Me siento muy halagado de que exista incluso una comparación con su magia.

TR: Gracias por este cumplido. Los tres estamos en muy buena forma y ojalá podamos mantener el bienestar que hemos tenido la suerte de obtener. Me he tomado el canto más en serio que nunca. Me doy cuenta de que es importante, especialmente ahora más que nunca. Cantar ahora me parece fácil, y tal vez uno de los factores es que nunca he sido fumador. Sin embargo, aunque Ronnie fumó gran parte de su vida, todavía podía cantar como si tuviera veinte años, incluso cuando tenía sesenta. Por otra parte, era una persona especial, con talentos sobrenaturales.

TR: Carl y yo siempre hemos escrito individualmente todas las canciones de The Rods. A veces colectivamente, pero sobre todo individualmente. En este álbum, asumí la tarea de escribir estas canciones. Era como si estuviera poseído. Las ideas para las canciones me resultaron más fáciles de lo normal. Creo que tuve la sensación de que teníamos algo que demostrar, y “lo hicimos”, en todos los aspectos de esta grabación. MiM: "Rattle the Cage" (Massacre Records, 2024) is a classic heavy metal album with a well-executed modern sound. Power, strength, and grit are the characteristics of this album. What can you tell me about this album?
TR: Power, strength, and grit. I like those characteristics. The album is just that. It’s an exceptional combination of the three of us, all representing what the album is. The three of us fit very well together, and the sound of the finished project really shows that. The songs are powerful, and heavy, yet melodic and more mature than previous RODS albums. That being said, we are delighted with the result, and the exquisite reviews that we are receiving.
MiM: The album cover is impressive. A three-headed dog was swinging furiously forward as if they were trying to say, “We're here, and we're going to take them all down.” Who was responsible for the design? What is the concept behind this design?
TR: We wanted to stick with our vision of the three-headed dog; however, this time we wanted to express the concept of how many people feel trapped in their daily lives. They are afraid to speak up about what they feel is wrong in their lives. We wanted to tell the listeners to, stand up for their rights and be heard. A way of being set free.
MiM: In this album, “Rattle the Cage,” you can feel the chemistry that exists between the musicians, which results in such a compact, heavy, and dynamic album. Is that so? What can you tell me about it?
TR: There is great chemistry among the three of us. We all seek the same powerful sound, and feelings that we want to represent in our music.
MiM: The song that gives its name to the album, “Rattle the Cage,” is an anthem of hope and strength for all those who lose faith in this world in which we live. Is that so? Comment me on this topic.
TR: You hit the nail on the head: "Loosing faith in the world we live in today.” This is very true. People are unhappy, and “Rattle the Cage” is meant to encourage them to stand up for what they believe in, and for what is right.
MiM: The lyrical approach on this album reminds me of the songwriting of the legend Ronnie James Dio, who is your cousin. You are the leader, founder, guitarist, and vocalist of the band. Is that so? Has Ronnie James Dio been an inspiration and influence when composing new material for the band?
TR: Ronnie has always been a great inspiration to me, and I think for all of us. Ronnie was an incredible lyricist, songwriter, and storyteller. His lyrics really meant something, and in these songs, I wanted my lyrics to mean something too. Something that the listeners could relate to, and also be inspired by. I am very flattered that there is even a comparison to his magic.
MiM: David, with his rough voice and impeccable guitar work, embodies the essence of Hard Rock and on this album it is very notable how good you are as a vocalist, showing that you are in excellent condition. How do you manage to maintain that strength in your voice despite the years?
TR: Thank you for this compliment. The three of us are in perfect shape, and hopefully, we can sustain the well-being that we have been fortunate to obtain. For me, I have taken singing more seriously than I ever have before. I realize that it is important, especially now more than ever. Singing now seems effortless to me, and maybe one factor is, is that I have never been a smoker. However, even though Ronnie did smoke a big part of his life, he could still sing like he was twenty years old, even in his sixties. Then again, he was a special person, with unworldly talents.
MiM: How does the creative process go in the band when it comes to composing, structuring, and deciding which songs or compositions will be part of an album? Is it a collaborative process between everyone, or does it fall to one or two people?
TR: Carl and I have always individually written all the Rods songs. Sometimes collectively, but mostly individually. On this album, I took on the duty of writing these songs. It was like I was possessed. The ideas for songs came easier than normal to me. I think I had the feeling that we had something to prove, and “we did" in all aspects of this recording. Carl and Freddy Villano gave me some titles, and lyric ideas. "Rattle the Cage” and “Shockwave” were titles that Carl came up with, along with some lyric ideas. Freddy came up with the title, “Hell or High Water” as well as the bass line at the beginning of “Cry out Loud.” All in all, it was really a collaborative process.
MiM: You are a band that has been formed for several years, with albums and many concerts in their career. Looking back, how would you rate the band's work all these years?
TR: Yes, we have played many concerts, in many corners of the world. We always gave 100%, and I can say that we are proud of what we have accomplished. We plan to play more shows to promote this new album, and to continue to represent ourselves in a way that the fans will enjoy hearing, as well as seeing.
MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?
TR: A few words at the end. “Rattle the Cage," believe in yourself and what you are doing, and never give up on your dreams.
