MD: Hola Raúl, primero muchas gracias por entrevistarme. Hace muchos años, en el pasado, cubrimos numerosas bandas de renombre como Helloween, Angra, Rhapsody of Fire, Symphony X, Stratovarius, Dream Theater, ya sabes, ¡cosas así! MD: Sí, definitivamente es un álbum conceptual. He utilizado las historias de esas figuras místicas para interpretar metafóricamente mi propia vida y experiencias. Creo que muchas personas pueden identificarse con estas experiencias, especialmente si viven en un lugar donde pocos entienden o apoyan sus esfuerzos en la escena local.

The Thai symphonic metal band Melodius Deite will release their new album “Demonology” on April 26 under the record label Art Gates Records. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk to Biggie Phanrath, producer, guitar, keyboards, orchestra, and drums of the band.

MiM: Tell me about the beginnings of the band. How did the idea of ​​forming the band come about?

MD:  Hi Raul, first, thank you so much for interviewing me. Many years ago, back in the day, we were covering numerous big-name bands like Helloween, Angra, Rhapsody of Fire, Symphony X, Stratovarius, Dream Theater—you know, stuff like that! One day, I thought we should form our own band and start playing our own music. That's when the idea of forming Melodius Deite came up. In 2007, we first appeared on the metal scene. The band was still called “Melodius” at that time. Actually, we had entered the scene many years before that as a cover band. So, I count our start from the year we started playing our own music.

MiM: “Demonology” (Art Gates Records, 2024) is an album with a surprising sound. Epic old-school power metal that takes us on a journey through a great story. The work with the vocals was exquisite, with catchy riffs and a crushing bass and drums base. What can you tell me about this album? What was the recording and production process like? Who was responsible for the production?

MD: “Demonology,” our 5th full-length album, is an epic fantasy power metal journey with a captivating fairy tale storyline. This time, we delve deep into darkness, as the album title suggests. Prepare to explore the sinister side of familiar folklore, featuring mysterious characters like Lucifer, Watchers, Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, and Banshees, but told from a fresh perspective and metaphorical angle. Get ready for a powerful metal experience presented in the form of a metal opera, featuring talented guest vocalists! The recording process was challenging but enjoyable; each of us recorded our parts from different corners of the globe—I recorded in Thailand, our singer Max Cruz in the USA, and we mixed and mastered the album at The Mixtery in Spain. I oversaw the album's production.

MiM: In “Demonology,” I feel a marked influence from bands like Helloween and DragonForce. Is that so?

MD: Yes, you might have heard that because they're certainly big names in the scene. Whenever bands release albums, people often compare their music to that of these two bands, especially in the power metal field. However, our musical vibes are more influenced by Angra, Galneryus, Heavenly, Adagio, Twilight Force, Nightwish, and Edu Falaschi. Ultimately, we have our own unique style.

MiM: This album has several luxury guests. How did the idea come about?

MD: This album is a metal opera, featuring main characters in a big story. Each guest singer plays a specific role, as detailed below: Jinn, from Illusion Force and Iron Attack, portrays 'The Watcher.' Petter Hjerpe, known from Morning Dwell and Mad Hatter, embodies 'The Vampire.' Raphael Dantas, recognized from Ego Absence, Gates of Paris, and Soulspell, takes on the role of 'The Werewolf.' Anira, a solo artist, embodies 'The Witch.' María Cobos, from The Third Grade, portrays 'The Banshee.'

MiM: Biggie, how has the experience of producing this album been? 

MD: Well, I have a range of feelings about it: happiness, determination, enjoyment, confusion, exhaustion, relief, etc. But in the end, it provided me with an invaluable experience. I worked with talented people from all over the world and did things I'd never done before, and in the end, we achieved an amazing result with the album.

MiM: Listening to the album, I feel a connection between all the songs. Is “Demonology” a concept album? What are the songs about, lyrically speaking?

MD: Yes, it's definitely a concept album. I've used the stories of those mystical figures to metaphorically interpret my own life and experiences. I believe many people can relate to these experiences, especially if they live in a place where few understand or support their endeavors in the local scene.

MiM: The orchestral arrangements are exceptional, making the themes grow to epic levels. What can you tell me about it?

MD: Yeah, the orchestral arrangements are also a big part of the album. You know, this kind of epic story needs epic instruments to create that true fantasy feeling. So, we incorporated epic music throughout the album to enhance the context. The music itself helps you feel the atmosphere, characters, places, and events in the album.

MiM: How does the creative process go in the band when it comes to composing, structuring, and deciding which songs or compositions will be part of an album?

MD: I am primarily responsible for composing, arranging, writing lyrics, and conceptualizing for the band. For this album, I oversaw composing and arranging all the songs, although there are a few tracks where my bandmates collaborated with me, as detailed below. All music and lyrics are by Biggie Phanrath, except for track 9 and track 10, where the music is co-composed by Biggie Phanrath and Chanin Shinken, and the lyrics for track 9 are by Max Cruz.

MiM: You are a band that has been formed for several years, with albums and tours. Looking back, how would you rate the band's work all these years?

MD: Oh man, that's a tough question, but if I have to pick my top three, it would be: 1 Demonology. 2 Episode III: The Archangels and the Olympians. 3 Episode II: Voyage Through the World of Fantasy

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? Are concerts or tours scheduled?

MD: Our label, Art Gates Records, has already scheduled and determined all the plans. It's a fantastic promotion opportunity. We'll be touring in Asia, including MIDI Fest in China, Thailand, Japan, and more. Additionally, we'll be performing at major European festivals like Metal Fest Open Air in the Czech Republic. We're also hoping for more tour announcements in the near future.
