La banda alemana de heavy metal Rage ha anunciado su nuevo álbum “Afterlifelines” que será lanzado el 29 de marzo bajo el prestigioso sello discográfico Steamhammer/SPV Entertainment. Será un álbum doble. El primero de ellos se titula Afterlife con nuevas canciones, y el segundo, Lifelines, contendrá canciones con arreglos orquestales. Fue una excelente oportunidad para hablar con Peavy Wagner, líder, fundador, bajista y vocalista de la banda.
MiM: “Afterlifelines” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2024) es un álbum doble que no solo celebra los 40 años de carrera de la banda, sino que también demuestra un alto nivel de creatividad en la banda. Un regalo para los fans de la banda. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?
P: Hacía mucho tiempo que deseaba sacar un álbum doble, así que ahora, con este aniversario en mente, me parecía el momento adecuado para hacerlo. SPV nos apoyó con esa idea. Comenzamos a recopilar ideas justo después del lanzamiento de “Resurrection Day” en otoño de 2021, ya que la situación de Corona nos obligó a retrasar todas las actividades de gira. Rápidamente, tuvimos muchas ideas, así que tuvimos la oportunidad de hacer dos álbumes a partir de ellas. Después de configurar la concepción del álbum, comenzamos a arreglar y grabar. Tuvimos suerte de haber construido nuestro propio estudio de grabación, así que tuvimos todo el tiempo del mundo para producir todas esas canciones. Trabajamos durante más de dos años, en total.

P: Desde el thrashy hasta el power, pasando por la épica, desde lo orquestal hasta lo progresivo, hemos incluido muchos elementos musicales de forma homogénea en nuestra música a lo largo de esos años.
MiM: ¿Cómo crees que han cambiado los objetivos y la visión de la banda en las cuatro décadas desde su creación?
P: Considerándolo todo, mi visión musical nunca ha cambiado. Me encanta crear música potente, melódica e inteligente.

The German heavy metal band Rage has announced their new album “Afterlifelines” which was released on March 29 under the prestigious record label Steamhammer/SPV Records. “Afterlifelines” will be a double album. MiM: “Afterlifelines” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2024) is a double album that not only celebrates the band's 40-year career, but also demonstrates a high level of creativity in the band. A gift for fans of the band. What was the recording and production process like?
P: It was my wish for a long time to release a double album, so now, with this anniversary in mind, it seemed like the right time to do it. SPV supported us with that idea. We started to collect ideas right after the release of “Resurrection Day” in autumn 2021, as the Corona situation forced us to delay all touring activities. Quickly, we had loads of ideas, so we had the opportunity to make two albums out of it. After setting up the album conception, we started to arrange and record. We were lucky to just have built up our own new recording studio, so we had all the time in the world to produce all those songs. We worked for more than two years, all in all.
MiM: “Afterlifelines” introduces Rage to the band's wide artistic range, from hard-fast to epic and symphonic. 94 minutes of new music!! Is that so?
P: Yes, that was our idea from the beginning: to bring all the stylistic elements to that album, that Rage had included in their music over those past four decades. (To bring them together and develop a kind of tension through all the songs that would lead to a climax in the end, with that climax in the end, with that Grande finale (Lifelines) and following tracks.)
MiM: Peavy, 40 years of successful career! God, there are few bands that can celebrate that. What were those beginnings like? How would you summarize 40 years of experience in a few words?
P: Back then it was a different world than today. Heavy metal just started as a new music scene, developing out of hard rock and punk. There were not that many bands around today. I'm truly grateful that the fans stayed true to us and that life gave me and Rage the opportunity to do this, what I love most, for my whole life.
MiM: The excellent orchestral arrangements—by whom did they occur?
P: As Pepe Herrero had no time for us this time, we worked with Marco Grasshoff, an exceptional pianist and arranger from Germany. He does not live far from me, so we had the chance to work closely together.
MiM: I feel a certain connection between the songs on the album. Is “Afterlifelines” a concept album? Tell me about it.
P: It's a red line going through all songs. As I told the story of mankind's cultural evolution from the Stone Age to now on the last album, causing plenty of problems for the planet, I spun a fictional, dystopic view of the future of the next hundred years.
MiM: How has Rage's sound evolved from the release of your first album until now?
P: From thrashy to power to epic and orchestral to progressive, we have included plenty of musical elements in a homogenic way in our music over those years.
MiM: How do you think the band's goals and vision have changed in the four decades since the band's inception?
P:All in all, my musical vision has never changed. I love to create powerful, melodic, intelligent music.
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this double album? Are concerts or tours scheduled for this new year?
P: Yes, plenty of touring is planned; you can check our internet appearances for the details. There’ll also be plenty of festival appearances, including some shows with the Lingua Mortis Orchestra. We are constantly booking more shows also into the next year, so keep yourself updated.
