"30 años, 30 canciones para celebrar"
Los power metaleros melódicos del norte de Alemania, Mob Rules, celebraron su 30 aniversario y el 3 de mayo lanzaron su álbum Celebration Day: 30 Years Of Mob Rules. La banda del cantante Klaus Dirks publica un recopilatorio que difícilmente podría ser más extenso y de mayor calidad.
Con más de 150 minutos de reproducción (repartidos en dos CD), la capacidad del medio se extiende al límite con 30 canciones cuidadosamente seleccionadas, que incluyen no solo clásicos obvios de la banda, sino también canciones que anteriormente habían estado menos en el centro de atención.
MiM: Hola, Klaus. “Celebration Day: 30 Years of Mob Rules” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2024) es un excelente regalo para todos los amantes del power metal y seguidores de la banda. MR: La idea de este álbum era seleccionar canciones que, según nosotros, no recibieron la atención o la importancia que merecían en su momento. También teníamos la idea de 30 años, así que queríamos que fueran 30 canciones. Eso fue un desafío, por supuesto, porque tenemos muchas canciones más largas en nuestro repertorio, así que tuvimos que cambiar un poco el orden de las canciones para conseguir el tiempo de reproducción correcto en ambos discos. Como puedes ver, quedó perfecto.
MiM: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación, mezcla y masterización de las canciones que se regrabaron para este álbum?
MR: Después de seleccionar las canciones, nuestro ingeniero Markus Teske se encargó de remasterizarlas. Después de todo, queríamos que las canciones de diferentes décadas sonaran lo más unificadas posibles. Añadimos canciones que antes solo estaban disponibles en formato digital y pusimos tres versiones nuevas y, en mi opinión, frescas en el álbum. Las canciones de covers fueron elegidas cuidadosamente y se pretendía que fueran interpretaciones del sonido de Mob Rules.
MiM: ¡Incluir a Roland Grapow como invitado en la canción “Way of the World” fue una idea excelente! ¿Cómo surgió la idea?
MR: Su banda, Masterplan, estaba en ascenso en ese momento, y tocamos algunos conciertos juntos. Matthias, nuestro guitarrista en ese momento, también era amigo de él, así que no fue realmente un gran problema juntarnos.

MiM: ¿Cómo crees que han cambiado los objetivos y la visión de la banda en las dos décadas desde su creación?
MR: Oh, no ha cambiado mucho; todavía queremos lograr o entregar los mejores resultados posibles, pero con el paso de los años, os habéis vuelto más relajados y menos tensos. Uno gana cierta experiencia con el paso de los años y puede categorizar todo mejor.
MiM: ¿Cómo ha evolucionado el sonido de Mob Rules desde el lanzamiento de su primer álbum hasta ahora?
MR: En realidad, encontramos nuestro sonido relativamente rápido y nos hemos mantenido fieles a él en gran medida. En realidad, son solo matices que cambian de un álbum a otro. En general, se puede decir que sus preferencias, y lo que los inspira en particular, se cristalizan un poco más. North German Melodic Power Metallers Mob Rules celebrate their 30th anniversary by releasing the album Celebration Day: 30 Years Of Mob Rules on May 3rd via Steamhammer. Singer Klaus Dirks' band publishes a compilation that could hardly be more extensive and of higher quality.
With over 150 minutes of playtime (spread over two CDs), the medium's capacity is stretched to the limit with 30 carefully selected songs, including not only obvious band classics such as “Black Rain”, “Hollowed Be Thy Name”, and “Rain Song”, but also songs that have previously been less in the spotlight.
MiM: Hello, Klaus. “Celebration Day: 30 Years of Mob Rules” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2024) is an excellent gift for all Power Metal lovers and followers of the band. A true gem undoubtedly. With exceptional production and sound. What can you tell me about this anniversary compilation? What was the process like for choosing which songs would be on this phonogram?
MR: The idea for this album was to select songs that, we felt, didn't get the attention or importance they deserved at the time. We also had the idea of 30 years, so we wanted it to be 30 songs. That was a challenge, of course, because we have many longer songs in our repertoire, so we had to move the order of the songs around a bit to get the playing time right on both discs. As you can see, it was just right.
MiM: How was the recording, mixing, and mastering process for the songs that were re-recorded for this album?
MR: After selecting the songs, our engineer Markus Teske took them on to remaster them. After all, we wanted the songs from different decades to sound as unified as possible. We added songs that were previously only available in digital form, and we put three new, and in my opinion, fresh cover versions on the album. The cover songs were chosen carefully and were intended to be interpretations of the Mob Rules sound.
MiM: Including Roland Grapow as a guest on the song “Way of the World” was an excellent idea! How did the idea come about?
MR: His band, Masterplan was on the rise at the time, and we played a few gigs together. Matthias, our guitarist at the time, was also friends with him, so it wasn't really a big deal to get together.
MiM: In this anniversary album, the band records several covers of bands from very diverse genres. How did the idea come about? Of all of them, Irene Cara's catches my attention. Please tell me about it.
MR: Our former drummer, Nikolas, is actually responsible for the cover of Irene Cara. During the lockdown, he suddenly had the idea of doing a cover version of Irene Cara. He heard the song on the radio in the shower, and the idea of recording a metal version of it was born. Our old friend and engineer Markus Teske gave the song a symphonic touch, and we are super happy with the result! Iron Maiden is the band of my youth, “The Number of the Beast” my first metal album and one of the reasons why I started making music in the first place. That's why I wanted to pay tribute to the band with this interpretation. I found it exciting to hear “Ghost” in a Mob Rules guise.
MiM: Your voice is very remarkable; how good you are as a vocalist, it indicates that you are in excellent condition. How do you manage to maintain that strength in your voice despite the years?
MR: Thank God, I am blessed with a fairly robust voice in this respect. Of course, I had my problems here and there at the beginning, but then I took singing lessons for about 2 years, and above all, the right breathing technique helps me to stay supple. Well, and the older you get, the more you have to look after yourself.
MiM: How do you think the band's goals and vision have changed in the two decades since the band's inception?
MR: Oh, not much has changed; we still want to achieve or deliver the best possible results, but over the years, you have become more relaxed and less tense. You gain a certain amount of experience over the years and can categorize everything better.
MiM: How has Mob Rules' sound evolved from the release of your first album until now?
MR: We actually found our sound relatively quickly and have largely remained true to it. It's really just nuances that change from album to album. On the whole, you can say that your preferences, and what inspires you in particular, crystallize a little more. Be it something more symphonic, Celtic, or straight metal, eventually we always realize: it is and remains Mob Rules.
MiM: You are a band that has been formed for several years, with albums and many concerts in their career. Looking back, how would you rate the band's work all these years?
MR: Music is of course, a matter of taste, but I would say that the band has always remained true to itself and is very authentic.
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this anniversary album? Are concerts or tours scheduled for this new year?
MR: We will play some release shows, and there will also be one or two club shows. But the focus this year will clearly be on completing the 10th studio album. Maybe one or two surprises for the anniversary; who knows?
