Apotheus es una banda de metal progresivo de Portugal, conocida por su combinación única de melodía y experimentación. Desde el comienzo de su carrera, Apotheus ha superado los límites del género metal y desafiado la categorización. Basándose en una amplia gama de influencias, su música combina riffs pesados, ritmos intrincados y melodías delicadas. MiM: ¿Cómo surgió la idea de formar la banda?

A: Apotheus es probablemente el primer proyecto serio que ha tenido cada miembro de la banda. Durante nuestra carrera, los miembros tuvieron otros proyectos paralelos. Pero Apotheus definitivamente es nuestro foco. Comenzamos en 2008, como un grupo de jóvenes amigos con una fuerte pasión por la música que querían crear algo nuevo. Francamente, es una forma muy cliché de empezar una banda, pero aun así, ¡esos tiempos anteriores nos son muy queridos! Con el paso de los años, maduramos y también nuestros objetivos con la banda. Y aquí estamos, quince años después.

MiM: "Ergo Atlas" (Black Lion Records, 2023) es un excelente disco con un sonido pesado, melódico y pasajes complejos. Producción impecable. Al escuchar el disco siento una marcada influencia de bandas como Symphony X, Dream Theater y Evergrey. ¿Qué puedes contarme sobre este álbum?

A: ¡Un gracias! Todas las bandas que mencionaste definitivamente pertenecen a nuestra formación musical. Sin embargo, no estoy seguro de si lo describiría como "marcado". Podría agregar Tesseract, Katatonia, Pain of Salvation, Soen, Leprous. Al final, eres lo que consumes. Sin embargo, no pensamos en ninguna influencia particular al componer las canciones. Creo que hay al menos dos cosas importantes que decir sobre "Ergo Atlas":

- es Apotheus con esteroides. Nunca hemos tenido un nivel de producción tan bueno. Y creemos que nunca hemos tenido tal nivel de composición. Creemos que estas son nuestras mejores habilidades actuales, más maduras y progresivas puestas a prueba. Estamos orgullosos de este récord.

- También es una secuela de nuestro álbum anterior. “The Far Star” inició una historia. “Ergo Atlas” lo continúa.

MiM: Al escuchar el álbum siento una conexión entre todas las canciones. ¿Es "Ergo Atlas" un álbum conceptual? ¿De qué tratan las canciones, líricamente hablando?

R: Sí. “Ergo Atlas” es absolutamente un álbum conceptual, al igual que lo es “The Far Star”. Incluso me atrevería a decir que quizá sea más conceptual de lo habitual. Permítanme explicarles: en “The Far Star”, se nos ocurrió una historia en la que basábamos nuestras canciones. Sin embargo, esa historia evolucionó mucho, con nuestra imaginación vertiendo cada vez más detalles en ella, en largas horas de divertida discusión entre nosotros. Llegamos a un punto en el que creímos y “hablamos” en términos de la historia, y colectivamente pensamos que esta historia no se transmitiría solo con música y letras en todo su esplendor. Entonces, decidimos escribir la historia y publicarla, y también grabar un audiolibro para acompañar el álbum. Cada pista del álbum es un capítulo de la historia. Entonces, la historia y la música son dos caras de la misma moneda.

Nos encantó este método para componer canciones. En “Ergo Atlas” repetimos el proceso, con algunas optimizaciones, pero prácticamente igual. “Ergo Atlas” es la secuela directa de “The Far Star”. MiM: ¿Podríamos definir el sonido de la banda o por el contrario son una banda inquieta a la que le gusta innovar y abrir nuevas propuestas?

A: Históricamente, siempre hemos luchado un poco para encontrar un género lo suficientemente amplio como para encajar. Definitivamente somos más exploratorios que muchas otras bandas (¡no hay nada de malo en no serlo!). Yo diría que es un poco difícil etiquetarnos. Hoy en día, simplemente optamos por “Metal progresivo” o “Metal melódico”.

MiM: ¿Cómo se da el proceso creativo en la banda a la hora de escribir, estructurar y decidir qué canciones o composiciones formarán parte de un álbum?

A: Nuestro trabajo es un proceso muy colaborativo. Primero, presentamos los eventos principales de la historia. Tenemos que saber sobre qué estamos componiendo. Luego viene la fase de composición. Tenemos estos “retiros”, donde nos aislamos en el estudio, apagamos nuestros celulares (principalmente) y dedicamos nuestro tiempo a componer durante 1 o 2 semanas. Lo amamos. La vibra creativa simplemente aumenta y nos volvemos muy productivos. A partir de ahí se crea la mayor parte de las canciones. Luego, podríamos hacer algunos otros retiros más pequeños para pulir las canciones. Paralelamente tenemos que encargarnos de escribir la historia en un formato final, grabarla, crear una banda sonora para el audiolibro, encargarnos del arte del álbum, encontrar socios editoriales y configurar nuestro show en vivo, merchandising… Es mucho. . (reír)

MiM: ¿Cómo has estado presentando tu anterior disco “The Far Star” en los diferentes escenarios en los que te has estado presentando?

A: Seguro. “The Far Star” se lanzó a finales de 2019. Justo antes de que llegara COVID. Fue desafortunado porque sentimos que la gente no llegó a conocer el álbum. Pero tocamos algunos shows en nuestra gira por Iberia en ese momento, y después de la pandemia también muchos shows. “The Far Star” es muy sólido y seguro que lo tocaremos durante muchos años más.

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?

A: Afortunadamente, nuestro calendario está muy ocupado para los próximos meses, pero principalmente para Portugal y España. Puedo decir que estamos trabajando activamente para conseguir una gira europea en este momento. Estoy seguro de que sucederá.

MiM: Finalmente, quería que te sintieras libre de compartir algunas palabras con tus fans y nuestros lectores.

R: Bueno, primero que nada, gracias. Tanto a nuestros fans, que nos han apoyado tanto a lo largo de los años, como a sus lectores. Lo mejor que puedo decir es desafiarlos a todos a sumergirse en el “universo” que creamos. Creemos que es una historia muy épica, que vale la pena dedicarle tiempo. Además, apoye a la banda si la disfrutó. Ojalá nos veamos en algún programa cercano. ¡Mantenerse seguro!

Apotheus is a progressive metal band from Portugal, known for its unique combination of melody and experimentation. Since the beginning of their career, Apotheus has pushed the boundaries of the metal genre and defied categorization. Drawing on a wide range of influences, their music combines heavy riffs, intricate rhythms, and delicate melodies. The concept album "The Far Star" garnered critical acclaim and cemented the band's place as a storytelling metal act. His new album “Ergo Atlas” is a direct sequel and he has continued to evolve his sound, experimenting with new musical techniques and incorporating a variety of influences and will be released on October 6 under the Black Lion Records label. Excellent opportunity to talk with the band.

MiM: How did the idea of forming the band come about? 

A: Apotheus is probably the first serious project each band member has ever had. During our career, members had other side projects. But Apotheus definitely is our focus. We started in 2008, as a group of young friends with a strong passion for music that wanted to create something new. Frankly, it’s a very cliché way of starting out a band, but still, those earlier times are very dear to us! As the years passed, we matured and so did our goals with the band. And here we are, fifteen years later.

MiM: Ergo Atlas (Black Lion Records, 2023) is an excellent album with a heavy, melodic sound and complex passages. Impeccable production. Listening to the album I feel a marked influence from bands like Symphony X, Dream Theater, and Evergrey. What can you tell me about this album?

A: Thank you! All the bands you mentioned are definitely in our musical background. Not sure if I would describe it as “marked”, though. I could add Tesseract, Katatonia, Pain of Salvation, Soen, and Leprous. In the end, you are what you consume. We didn’t think of any particular influence when composing the songs, though.I think there are at least two important things to say about Ergo Atlas:

- it’s “Apotheus” on steroids. We’ve never had such a good production level. And we think we’ve never had such a songwriting level. We think this is our current best, more mature and progressive skills put to the test. We are proud of this record.

- It’s also a sequel to our previous album. “The Far Star” started a story. “Ergo Atlas” continues it.

MiM: Listening to the album I feel a connection between all the songs. Is "Ergo Atlas" a concept album? What are the songs about, lyrically speaking?

A: Yes. “Ergo Atlas” is a concept album, just like “The Far Star”. I would even dare to say that it might be more conceptual than usual. Allow me to explain: in “The Far Star”, we came up with a story that we used to base our songs on. However, that story evolved a lot, with our imagination pouring more and more details into it, in long hours of fun discussion between us. We reached a point when we believed and “talked” in terms of the story, and we collectively thought that this story would not be conveyed in just music and lyrics in all its glory. So, we decided to write the story and publish it, and also record an audiobook for it, to go along with the album. Each track of the album is a chapter in the story. So, the story and the music are two sides of the same coin.

We absolutely loved this method for composing songs. In “Ergo Atlas”, we repeated the process, with some optimizations, but largely the same. “Ergo Atlas” is the direct sequel of “The Far Star”. Very briefly, the story has a strong science-fiction background, very much inspired by Isaac Asimov’s works. “The Far Star” was a quest for survival. In “Ergo Atlas” the story evolves to philosophical quandaries about the human nature and artificial intelligence in a kind of epic way. Definitely check it out. 

MiM: Could we define the band's sound or, on the contrary, are they a restless band that likes to innovate and open new proposals?

A: Historically, we have always struggled a little bit to find a genre wide enough for us to fit in. We are definitely more exploratory than many other bands (nothing wrong with not being so!). I would say it’s a bit hard to label us. These days, we just go with “Progressive Metal” or “Melodic Metal”.

MiM: How does the creative process take place in the band when it comes to writing, structuring and deciding which songs or compositions will be part of an album? 

A: Our work is a very collaborative process. First, we come up with the main events of the story. We have to know what we are composing about. Then comes the composition phase. We have these “retreats”, where we isolate ourselves in the studio, turn off our cellphones (mostly), and dedicate our time to composing for one or two weeks. We love it. The creative vibe just builds up, and we get so productive. From there, the bulk of the songs are created. Then, we might do a few other smaller retreats to polish the pieces. In parallel, we have to take care of writing the story in a final format, recording it, coming up with a soundtrack for the audiobook, taking care of the album artwork, finding publishing partners, and setting up our live show, merchandise… It’s a lot. (laugh)

MiM: How have you been presenting your previous album "The Far Star" in the different stages in which you have been performing?

A: For sure. “The Far Star” was released in late 2019. Right before COVID hit. It was unfortunate that people didn’t get to know the album. But we played some shows in our Iberia tour at the time, and after the pandemic a lot of shows as well. “The Far Star” is very solid, and we will play it for many years to come, for sure.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? 

A: Fortunately, our calendar is getting really busy for the upcoming months, but mainly for Portugal and Spain. I can say that we are actively working on getting a European tour at the moment. I’m sure it will happen.

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?

A: Well, first of all, thank you. Both to our fans, who have been so supportive over the years, and to your readers. The best thing I can say is to challenge you all to immerse in the “universe” we created.
