No es fácil encontrar personas con talento real. Una férrea voluntad y el lado profesional son los que hacen la diferencia.

Temperance acaba de sacar su segundo disco, Limitless, y hemos quedado con Chiara y Marco, los vocalistas de la banda, para que nos hablen un poco más sobre el proyecto. (YOU CAN READ THE ENGLISH VERSION AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS)

MiM - Por favor, ¿podrías presentarnos a la banda?
Chiara – Hola a todos.  Temperance somos Marco, guitarra líder y  vocal; Sandro, guitarra rítmica; Giulio, batería; Luca, bajo, y yo como vocalista.

MiM - Los músicos del grupo tienen una amplia experiencia, ¿cuéntame sobre ello?
Marco – Todos nosotros venimos con gran experiencia lo que nos ha llevado a ser lo que somos actualmente. Temperance es esa idea que explotó desde que comenzamos a tocar hace algunos años. Quiero decir, para mí lo mejor del mundo es compartir el escenario con mis amigos, divertirnos, exponer nuestra música y vivir juntos todos estos momentos.

MiM - Chiara es un tesoro. ¿Trabajó antes en algún otro grupo? ¿Dónde la encontraron?
Marco – Conocíamos a Chiara desde antes, entonces un día nos encontramos y tratamos de formar una banda con voz femenina. Aunque el resultado fue positivo desde el primer ensayo, junto a los aspectos técnicos, yo prefiero el lado humano. No es fácil encontrar personas con talento real. Una férrea voluntad y el lado profesional son los que hacen la diferencia.

MiM - Marco, tú también eres un gran vocalista. Aun recuerdo la buena combinación de voces en “Breathe”, el single y video de vuestro CD auto titulado. ¿Por qué escogieron esta cancion como single?
Marco – Muchas gracias por tus amables palabras. En “Breathe” decidimos que yo cantara la sección central porque queríamos mezclar diferentes tonos de color, como si fuéramos pintores con una paleta. Pienso que elegimos “Breathe” como primer single porque queríamos remarcar nuestro lado más melódico.  

MiM - Han trabajado muy rápido grabando vuestro segundo CD. ¿Qué pasó entre el primer y el segundo CD?
Chiara – Bueno, el año pasado fue muy laborioso para nosotros. Después de la salida de nuestro disco debut, de hecho, tuvimos la oportunidad de viajar por toda Italia, Europa e incluso Estados Unidos para mostrar nuestra música. Fue justo al finalizar la gira norteamericana que comenzamos a componer lo que serían las canciones de “Limitless”: el montón de experiencias compartidas como grupo nos llenó la cabeza de ideas las cuales no podíamos esperar para convertirlas en música.

MiM - ¿Cuáles son las principales diferencias entre Temperance y Limitless?
Chiara – Podemos decir que muchos elementos que estaban presentes en nuestro disco debut han sido utilizados de una manera más extrema… esta probablemente sea la diferencia principal entre los dos álbumes. Y, por supuesto, nuestra experiencia común y nuestra empatía han crecido mucho, y ha sido un hecho que ha influido fuertemente en el proceso de composición del nuevo álbum.

MiM - Yo tengo una gran duda. ¿Ustedes trabajan con una orquesta real? Les pregunto porque los sonidos orquestales son realmente impresionantes. Y si me dices que si, necesito preguntarte: ¿de dónde sacan el dinero para pagar una orquesta?
Marco – Quisimos hacer este disco de nuevo sin una orquesta real, aprovechando el talento de Giulio en los teclados y arreglos. Tal vez grabemos con una orquesta en el futuro, ¡pero quién sabe! Sin embargo, una de las cosas que más me enorgullecen de este disco es el coro infantil de la primera canción. Grabamos con 40 chicos y chicas y esto fue maravilloso. Un sentimiento increiblemente bello que no he podido sacar de mi cabeza.

MiM - En este segundo CD hay algunos momentos que me recuerdan el nuevo disco de Amaranthe. ¿Hay algunas influencias de Amaranthe en Temperance?
Chiara – Bueno, probablemente la presencia de tres voces y el uso de sonidos electrónicos son elementos que compartimos con esa banda sueca y otras bandas de metal moderno, pero pienso que hay muchas diferencias en el uso de tales elementos y en la estructura de las canciones.

MiM - La primera canción, “Oblivion”, es estupenda. ¿Puedes darme más detalles acerca de la canción? Hay una segunda voz femenina que se parece a la de Tarja, pero no es ella, ¿o lo es?
Chiara - Jajaja, no hay otra vocalista femenina en “Oblivion”… soy yo cantando en “estilo operático”. Me agrada que te guste esta canción, porque también es una de mis favoritas: en “Oblivion” tengo la oportunidad de expresarme por el uso de varios estilos vocales diferentes. También me gusta el coro infantil del comienzo.

MiM - “Me, Myself and I” fue escogida para hacer un lyric video. ¿Podemos considerar que será un primer single? ¿Hay planes para grabar un video? Si lo hubiera, ¿cuál sería la canción seleccionada?
Chiara - Seguro, “Me, Myself and I” puede ser considerado el primer single. El próximo será el tercer tema del álbum, “Save Me”, y será el primer video oficial de Limitless. 

MiM - Marco, en Limitless cantas un poco menos que en vuestro primer álbum. ¿Me equivoco?
 Marco – No lo sé, una vez más en este disco hay muchas partes donde hago las voces, Nuestra meta es dejar algunos espacios para ciertas experimentaciones vocales, mayormente coros y harmonías, como segundas voces. Y si escuchas cuidadosamente Limitless, comparado con el otro disco, te darás cuenta que hay abundancia de estos trabajos vocales. Hasta Giulio hizo algunas partes vocales aquí.

MiM - En Limitless hay más teclados, ¿sí?
Chiara - Si, en Limitless hay ligeramente más teclados. No hay una razón especifica para ello…es solo que salió asi. Si queremos obtener un cierto sonido en una canción especifica, agregamos cualquier cosa que nos pueda gustar, y entonces ocurrió que en algunas canciones de Limitless decidimos agregar más teclados.

MiM - He leído que Giulio toca la batería y los teclados. ¿Cómo puede lidiar con ello? ¿Qué pasa en los directos? ¿Utilizan un tecladista en directo?
Marco – Giulio es muy talentoso. Es un buen baterista pero es el piano el instrumento que mas se ajusta a sus necesidades. No nos apetece tener un tecladista adicional en el escenario, asi que sacamos ventajas de la tecnología utilizando un secuenciador que reproduce la pista y los acompañamientos, como teclados o efectos.

MiM - ¿Quién escribe las canciones? ¿Cómo funciona el proceso de creación?
Chiara – Toda la música la escriben Marco y Giulio, mientras que soy yo quien escribo las letras. El proceso de composición es con frecuencia algo parecido a una “corriente de la consciencia” y es la respuesta a por qué fuimos capaces de escribir y grabar nuestro segundo disco en tan poco tiempo.

MiM - ¿Por qué repitieron con Simone Mularoni a la producción?
Chiara – Por supuesto que fue porque él es un excelente productor y músico y además porque después del magnífico trabajo que hizo con nuestro debut, no teníamos dudas de que era la persona correcta para trabajar en Limitless.

MiM - ¿Hay algún plan para girar fuera de Italia? ¿Otra gira americana sería posible?
Chiara - Si, en los próximos meses llevaremos nuestra música al Reino Unido y a Europa del Este, y una gira norteamericana no es solo posible, sino también muy deseada… amamos al público norteamericano y estaríamos muy alegres de regresar allá.

MiM - Muchísimas gracias Marco y  Chiara, La banda es superior y les deseamos un gran éxito en el futuro cercano.

It’s not that easy to find people with a real talent, a strong will and a professional side that makes the difference.

Temperance is just releasing its second CD, Limitless, and we met Chiara and Marco to speak a little more about the project.

MiM - Could you, please, slightly introduce the band?
Chiara - Hello everybody! Temperance is: Marco, lead guitar and vocals, Sandro, rhythm guitar, Giulio, drums, Luca, bass and Chiara, vocals.

MiM - You are musicians with a wide experience. Where are the band members coming from?
Marco - All of us come from a lot of experiences in these years that brought us to be what we are now. I believe that Temperance is that thought that popped up since we began to play on our own many years ago. I mean, to me the best thing in the world is to play on the same stage with your friends, having fun, bringing around your music and living together all these moments.

MiM - I consider Chiara as a treasure in this band. Was she previously involved in a band? I would really like to know, how did you find her?
Marco - We already knew Chiara before, then one day we met and we tried to build up this new band with her female voice. The result amazed us since our first rehearsal day; but besides the technical side, I prefer the human one. It’s not that easy to find people with a real talent, a strong will and a professional side that makes the difference.

MiM - Marco, you are a great singer too. I still remember the good voices combines in “Breathe”, the single and video from your first self-titled CD. Why did you choose this song as a single?
Marco - Thank you so much for the kind words. In “Breathe” we decided to put my voice in the middle of the song ‘cause we wanted to mix a lot of different shades of colours, as we were painters with a palette. I think we chose Breathe as our first single because we wanted to remark our melodic side. 

MiM - You were working so fast recording your second CD. What happen between the first and the second CD? Were you on tour or just recording?
Chiara - Well, the last year has been quite a busy one for us: after the release of our debut, in facts, we had the chance to travel around Italy, Europe and even the US, playing our music. And it was right after the US tour that we started composing “Limitless”: the bunch of experiences we shared had brought us so many ideas that we couldn’t wait to put them into music.

MiM - What are the main differences between Temperance and Limitless?
Chiara - We can say that many elements that were already there in our debut have been used in a rather more extreme fashion…this is probably the main difference between the two albums. And, of course, our common experience and empathy have increased a lot, and this fact has heavily influenced the composing process of the new album.

MiM - I have a big doubt. Do you use a real orchestra? I ask because the orchestral sound is really impressive? But, if you tell me yes, I need to ask: Where did you find the money to pay an orchestra?
Marco - We wanted to make this record once again without a real orchestra but with Giulio’s talent on keyboards and arrangements. Maybe we’re gonna record a real orchestra in the future but who knows. However, one of the things that make me really proud on this new album is the children choir in the opener. We recorded 40 children, boys and girls and that was amazing. An incredibly beautiful feeling that I can’t get out my mind.

MiM - In this second CD some moments remind me the new Amaranthe CD. Are there any influences of Amaranthe in Temperance?
Chiara - Well, probably the presence of three voices and the use of electro sounds are elements that we share with the Swedish band and with other modern metal bands…but I think there are so many differences in the use of such elements and in the structure of the songs.  

MiM - The first song, Oblivion, is great. Can you tell me more details about this song? There is a second female voice that is like Tarja voice but she isn´t, Is she?
Chiara - Ahah, there is no other female vocalist in “Oblivion”…it is actually me singing in “operatic style”. I am glad you like that song, because it is also one of my fave’: in “Oblivion” I have the chance to express myself by means of the use of many different vocal styles… I also love the children choir in the beginning.

MiM - “Me, Myself and I” was chosen to make a lyric video. Can we consider it the first single? Are there plans to make a video? In this case, what will be the song selected?
Chiara - Sure, “Me, Myself and I” can be considered the first single. Next one will be the third track of the album, “Save Me”, and it will be the first music video taken from “Limitless”. 

MiM - In Limitless your vocal part are a little less than in the self-titled album. Am I wrong?
Marco - I don’t really know, once again on this work there are a lot of parts where I do lead vocals. Our goal was to leave some space for some vocal experimentation, mostly choirs and harmonies as backing vocals. And if you listen carefully to Limitless, compared to the other album, you’ll notice that there are plenty of these kind of vocal stuff. Even Giulio did some vocals on this one.

MiM - In Limitless there are more keys, am I right?
Chiara - Yes, in Limitless there are slightly more keys…there is not a specific reason for that… it is just that, if we want to obtain a certain sound in a certain song, we add anything we might like, and so it happened that in some songs taken from Limitless we decided to add more keys.

MiM - I have read that Giulio plays drums and keys. How can he manage it? What happen in concert? Do you use a live keyboard player?
Marco - Giulio is a real talent. He’s a good drummer but in my opinion the piano is the instrument that fits the most for him. We just don’t feel like having an actual keyboard player on stage and we just take advantage from technology using a sequencer that plays the click track and backing stuff like keys or effects.

MiM - Who wrote the songs? How is the recording process?
Chiara - All music is by Marco and Giulio, while it was me who wrote the lyrics. The composing process is very often something like a “stream of consciousness”, and this is why we were able to write and record our second album in such a short time.

MiM - Why did you repeat with Simone Mularoni on production?
Chiara - Of course because he is a great musician and producer, and because, after the great job he did on our debut, we had no doubt he was the right person to work with on our Limitless.

MiM - Are there some plans to tour outside Italy? Another American tour could be possible?
Chiara - Yes, in the next months we will bring our music to the UK and to Eastern Europe, and a US tour is not only possible, but it is also highly desired…we love the American audience and we would be very happy to come back there!

MiM - Thank you very much, Marco, the band is really superior and I wish you a great success in the nearly future.
