"Cuando toco un bajo mucho tiempo, la púa afloja el barniz y fresa un surco en la madera".

MiM - Hola, mi nombre es Raúl Cardona y es un gran placer hablar con Dieter Wittbecker, bajista de la banda de Thrash Metal Pyracanda. ¡Hola Dieter! ¡Cómo estas hermano! ¿Cómo fueron esos inicios? En esos años el Thrash Metal tenía un auge fenomenal. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de aquellos tiempos?

DW - Hola Raúl. Un placer conocerte. ¿En esos días? Todo era diferente en la música en ese entonces. Las bandas todavía hacían su propia música. Hacían demos y tenían que convencer a las compañías discográficas de que la banda valía la pena y que tenía sentido invertir en su música. Se tocaban conciertos para promocionar las grabaciones. Hoy es al revés. En ese momento estabas feliz de obtener una reseña en las conocidas revistas de metal. Hoy todo es digital. Las bandas se promocionan en la web, los fanáticos ya no compran discos, hacen streaming. Todo está al revés.

No quiero decir que hoy sea peor, ni mucho menos. Lo que quiero decir es que en el pasado todo era analógico; había que hacer más trabajo para la música, más trabajo manual.

MiM - Pyracanda tiene un sonido bastante rápido y técnico con guitarras y solos cargados de riffs. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto? ¿Cuándo empezaste, tenías planeado lograr este objetivo? En ese momento, ¿Cuáles fueron tus influencias musicales a la hora de componer nuevo material?

DW - Nuestras influencias fueron sólo indirectas. Nunca quisimos copiar a otros. Pero ciertamente eran las bandas que nos gustaba escuchar Metallica, Exodus, Megadeth, claramente esto da forma a tu imagen de un género musical.

Todas las pistas de "Two Sides of a Coin" y "Thorns" se crearon en la sala de ensayo. Estaba Dennis, era la máquina de riffs y estaba Elmar, era el hombre de los arreglos. Y estaba Hansi, el hombre con la melodía, con el carisma y la narración de historias en su voz. Y como banda formábamos las canciones a partir de esta base en la sala de ensayo, hasta que quedaban redondas y nos gustaban.

Me uní unos meses después de que se formara la banda. Ya había una primera demo. No era de muy alta calidad pero era real y se podía escuchar el potencial de la banda. Eso fue lo principal. Hubo algunas compañías discográficas interesadas y decidimos ir con No Remorse Records de Charly Rinne. Además de nosotros, Charly tenía bandas como Blind Guardian y Grinder. En 1990 se lanzó "Two Sides of a Coin" que fue donde todo comenzó.

MiM – El álbum “Two Sides of a Coin” (No Remorse Records, 1990) tiene temas espectaculares. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical del disco?

DW - Como ya se describió, escribimos las piezas en la sala de ensayo, luego las grabamos y se las enviamos a nuestro productor Armin Sabol. Nuestro amigo Peavy de Rage nos recomendó a Amin. Armin ya había hecho "Perfect Man" y "Secrets in a Weird World" con Rage en ese momento.

Armin luego tomó su varita mágica, que en realidad era un bisturí, y talló las superficies de todas nuestras canciones con él, hasta que encajaron. Ese fue un proceso doloroso para nosotros porque esas eran nuestras canciones, nuestro santuario. Fue muy emotivo pero al final Armin tenía razón con todo lo que había hecho.

Luego fuimos al estudio, el Ege Studio en Bad Schussenried, Alemania. Y siguió siendo emocionante, un gran momento. Allí, todas las canciones fueron grabadas limpiamente una vez más. Armin Sabol y Dieter Ege resultaron ser un equipo de ensueño y encajaron perfectamente en la banda. Todos nos sentimos muy cómodos. El resultado fue "Two Sides of a Coin". No hay nada más que decir al respecto.

MiM – El álbum “Thorns” (Aaarrg Records, 1992), que este año celebra su 20 Aniversario, tiene un sonido sorprendente. ¡Puro Thrash Metal! ¿Cómo fue el proceso de composición de la música? ¿Quién fue su productor? ¿En qué estudio de grabación se llevó a cabo?

DW - Cabe mencionar al respecto que en ese momento ya no existía No Remorse Records. Ralph Hubert vino con su sello, Aaarrg Records e hicimos el álbum "Thorns" con él. Ralph Hubert probablemente sea conocido por muchos como productor de discos, pero también como el líder de Mekong Delta.

Por supuesto, todas las canciones fueron escritas por nosotros en nuestra sala de ensayo. Pero nosotros, Pyracanda, estábamos experimentando mucho en ese momento en términos de música, y puedes escucharlo en "Thorns". El álbum "Two Sides of a Coin" atraviesa los oídos y llega al corazón la primera vez que lo escuchas, por otro lado, "Thorns" necesita ser escuchado tres veces para entenderlo por completo. 

MiM - Han pasado algunos años desde que salió el último disco de la banda. ¿Cuándo podrán los fans escuchar nuevo material de la banda?

DW - Para ser honesto, actualmente estamos en conversaciones con compañías discográficas. Todo lo que puedo decir es que hay interés; por supuesto, pero no hemos firmado nada todavía. Todavía estamos esperando un poco. Actualmente estamos trabajando en nuevas canciones y parece que los fans pueden esperar escuchar algo nuevo de nosotros en un futuro cercano.

MiM - En tu carrera has tocado tanto en vivo como en estudio con varios bajos. ¿Cuáles son esos bajos que guardas por los recuerdos que te traen? Seguro que muchos lectores se preguntarán qué marcas de bajo utilizas, que pedales y referencias crees que son adecuadas para tocar rock. ¿Qué cuerdas usas en las presentaciones en vivo? ¿Y cuál es tu bajo favorito actualmente?

DW - Para ser honesto, soy más un tipo práctico cuando se trata de mis instrumentos. Los bajos tienen que sonar bien, por supuesto, y deben ir junto con los golpes duros y rápidos. En nuestra música, el bajo a veces toca riffs completos de guitarra y, a veces, estos son rápidos para las cuerdas gruesas. Nuestro técnico de guitarra, Rix, me dijo antes de un espectáculo que nunca había visto a nadie con un ataque tan fuerte en el bajo. Cuando toco un bajo mucho tiempo, la púa afloja el barniz en ese punto y fresa un surco en la madera. Por eso es importante para mí tocar un bajo que suene bien y también es importante que sea ligero. Simplemente no tengo ningún deseo de que me dé un dolor de espalda.

El bajo con el que toqué “Two Sides of a Coin” era de Fritz Rössel Fairytale Guitars. Un constructor de guitarras de primera clase aquí desde mi ciudad natal, Koblenz. Un instrumento fantástico. Luego tuvimos un patrocinio con LAG y toqué un LAG Explorer Bass. Esa fue una gran pieza. Sonido duro y directo y todavía lleno de tonos. Después de eso, toqué Ibanez Soundgear durante muchos años. Tienen los típicos mástiles Ibáñez, son ligeros y tienen un buen volumen.

Actualmente juego Fender Precision y estoy muy contento con él. Sólido, fácil, sin complicaciones. Sigue siendo el clásico y un gran instrumento. El único efecto que utilizo en algunas partes de temas como "The Dragons Cult" del "Thorns" es el "BOSS CH-1 Super Chorus. Las cuerdas que actualmente prefiero tocar son las Ernie Ball 45 o 50.

MiM - ¿Cuáles son los bajistas de la escena del metal que crees que te han influenciado?

DW - En este sentido, siempre tengo que decepcionar. Los bajistas que me interesan tocan música diferente a la que hacemos con Pyracanda. Son gente como Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Sting (The Police) o John Deacon (Queen).

MiM - ¿Gira o proyecto de concierto en este nuevo año?

DW - Como dije, nos estamos enfocando en escribir nuevas canciones este año. Pero habrá un show al aire libre en Alemania (Der Detze Rockt) y actualmente estamos discutiendo sobre tocar en algunos shows en USA y Japón tal vez.

MiM - Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

DW - No sé qué tan grande es la escena del metal en Cuba. Por eso me alegró mucho la invitación para hacer esta entrevista de un periodista cubano. Nunca hemos estado en Cuba antes. Pero tal vez, nunca se sabe, en algún momento en el futuro. La música hace posible muchas cosas.

Interview with Dieter Wittbecker (Pyracanda).

MiM - Hello, my name is Raúl Cardona and it is a great pleasure to talk with Dieter Wittbecker, bassist of the Thrash Metal band Pyracanda. Hello Dieter! How are you, brother! How were those beginnings? In those years Thrash Metal had a phenomenal boom. What memories do you have of those times?

DW - Hi Raúl. Nice to meet you. In those days? Everything was different in music back then. Bands still made their music themselves. They made demos and had to convince record companies that the band was worth it and that it made sense to invest in their music. Concerts were played to promote the recordings. Today it's the other way around. At that time you were happy to get a review in the well-known metal magazines. Today it's all digital. Bands promote themselves on the web, fans don't buy records anymore, they stream.  Everything has turned around.

I don't want to say that it's worse today - far from it. What I want to say is that in the past everything was analog; more work had to be done for the music - more manual work.

MiM - Pyracanda has a fairly fast and technical sound with riff-laden guitars and solos. What can you tell me about it? When did you start, did you plan to achieve this goal? At that time, what were your musical influences when composing new material?

DW - Our influences were only indirect. We never wanted to copy others. But certainly, it was the bands we liked to listen to Metallica, Exodus, Megadeth, clearly this shapes your image of a music genre.

All tracks for the "Two sides of a coin" and the "Thorns" were created in the rehearsal room. There was Dennis - he was the riff machine and there was Elmar - he was the man for the arrangements. And there was Hansi - the man with the melody, with the charisma and the storytelling in his voice. And as a band, we formed the songs from this foundation in the rehearsal room - until they were round and we liked them.

I joined a few months after the band was formed. There was already a very first demo. It wasn't very high quality but it was real and you could hear the potential of the band. That was the main thing. There were a few interested record companies and we decided to go with No Remorse Records by Charly Rinne. Besides us, Charly had bands like Blind Guardian and Grinder. In 1990 "Two sides of a coin" was released and then it started.

MiM - The Album Two Sides of a Coin (No Remorse Records, 1990) has spectacular themes. How was the process of recording and musical production of the album?

DW - As already described, we wrote the pieces in the rehearsal room, we then recorded them and sent them to our producer Armin Sabol. Amin was recommended to us by our friend Peavy from Rage. Armin had already done "Perfect Man" and "Secrets in a Weird World" with Rage at that time. 

And Armin then took his magic wand, which was actually a scalpel, and he carved the surfaces of all our songs round with it - until they fit. That was a painful process for us because those were our songs - our sanctuary. It was very emotional but in the end, Armin was right. With everything, he had done.

And then we went to the studio, the Ege Studio in Bad Schussenried, Germany. And it continued to be exciting, a great time. There, all the songs were recorded clearly once again. Armin Sabol and Dieter Ege turned out to be a dream team and they fitted the band perfectly. We all felt very comfortable. The result was "Two sides of a coin". There is nothing more to say about it.

MiM - The Thorns Album (Aaarrg Records, 1992), which this year will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary, has a surprising sound. Pure Thrash Metal! How was the process of composing the music? Who was your producer? In which recording studio was it carried out?

DW - It should be mentioned in this regard that at that time No Remorse Records no longer existed. Ralph Hubert came with his label "Aaarrg Records" and we made the album "Thorns" with him. Ralph Hubert is probably known to many as a record producer but also as the head of Mekong Delta.

Of course, all the songs were written by us in our rehearsal room. But we, Pyracanda, were experimenting a lot at that time in terms of music.

And you can hear it on the "Thorns". The album "Two sides of a coin" goes right through the ears into the heart the first time you hear it, on the other hand, the "Thorns" need to be heard three times to be understood completely.

MiM - It's been a few years since the band's last record came out. When will fans be able to hear new material from the band?

DW - To be honest, we are currently in initial discussions with record companies. All I can say is that there is interest; of course, but we haven't signed anything yet. We are still waiting a little bit. Currently, we are working on new songs and it looks like the fans can expect to hear something new from us in the near future.

MiM - In your career, you have played both live and in the studio with various basses. What are those basses that you keep for the memories they bring you? Many readers will surely wonder what bass brands you use, pedals, and references you think are suitable for playing rock. What strings do you use in live performances? And what is your favorite bass currently?

DW - To be honest, I'm more of a practical guy when it comes to my instruments. Basses have to sound good, of course, and they should go along with the fast hard strokes. In our music, the bass sometimes plays whole guitar riffs and they are sometimes fast for the thick strings. Our guitar tech Rix told me before a show that he has never seen anyone with such a hard attack on the bass. When I play a bass longer, the pick loosens the varnish at that point and mills a groove in the wood over time. So it is important for me to play a bass that sounds good and it is also important that it is light. I just have no desire for back pain.

The bass I played the “Two Sides of a Coin” with was from Fritz Rössel Fairytale Guitars. A first-class guitar builder here from my hometown Koblenz. A fantastic instrument.

Then we had an endorsement with LAG and I played a LAG Explorer Bass. That was a great piece. Hard a straight sound and is still full in tone. After that, I played Ibanez Soundgear for many years. They have the typical Ibanez necks, are light, and have a nice volume.

Currently, I play Fender Precision and I am very happy with it. Solid, easy, uncomplicated. Still a classic and a great instrument. The only effect I use in some parts in tracks like "The Dragons Cult” from “Thorns Album" is the "BOSS CH-1 Super Chorus". The strings I currently prefer to play are the Ernie Ball 45 or 50.

MiM - What are the bassists of the metal scene that you think have influenced you?

DW - In this regard, I always have to disappoint. The bass players that interest me all play different music than we do with Pyracanda. They are people like Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Sting (The Police), or John Deacon (Queen). 

MiM - Tour or concert project in this new year?

DW - As I said, we are focusing on writing new songs this year. But there will be a show at an open-air in Germany (Der Detze Rockt) and we are currently discussing playing a few shows in USA and Japan maybe.

MiM - Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers

DW - I don't know how big the metal scene is in Cuba. That's why I was very happy about the invitation to do this interview with a Cuban journalist. We have never been to Cuba before. But maybe, you never know - sometime in the future. Music makes many things possible.
