La banda alemana de Dark Metal Lacrimas Profundere lanzará su nuevo álbum “How To Shroud Yourself With Night” el 26 de agosto bajo el prestigioso sello discográfico Steamhammer/SPV. Made in Metal habla con Oliver Nikolas, fundador, líder y guitarrista de la banda para conocer todo sobre este álbum y la historia de la banda.

 MiM: ¡Hola Oliver! ¿Cuéntanos sobre los inicios de la banda? 

LP: Hola Raúl, gracias por recibirnos, un gusto hablar contigo también hermano. Allá por 1993 nació la idea de convertirnos en estrellas de rock fundando una banda. Ahora, 29 años después, me he enterado de que no funcionó (risas). El nombre de la banda es derivado del latín y describe algo así como derramar lágrimas. En el pasado, tocamos algunos shows bajo el nombre de Dark Eternity, pero cuando descubrimos que ya había una banda con ese nombre en los EE. UU., cambiamos el nombre, pero siempre pensé que el testamento de una carrera real no era si un artista pudiera hacerlo durante cinco años o durante 10 años. Era más como, ¿podrías hacerlo por 20? ¿Podrías hacerlo por 29? ¡Si podemos!

MiM: "How To Shroud Yourself With Night" (Steamhammer/SPV, 2022) es un disco que cuenta con un excelente trabajo de producción. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción? ¿Quién fue su productor? ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar?

LP: Muchas gracias. Nuevamente, hicimos las grabaciones y la producción en el estudio Kohlekeller con Kohle y Kai (Powerwolf, Benighted). Elegimos volver a trabajar con este estudio porque grabamos el último disco allí y nos gustó mucho el resultado. Grabamos batería y guitarras en el verano de 2020 y queríamos continuar con las sesiones vocales un mes después, pero el Corona dijo que no y tuvimos que parar la producción durante casi nueve meses.

Sin embargo, esta situación nos dio la libertad de repensar todo, cambiar arreglos y voces y grabar dos nuevas canciones. Finalmente, en julio de 2021, Julian y yo regresamos por dos semanas. El estudio está en medio de la nada. Eso significó catorce días solo nosotros y nuestra música. Sin presión de fechas de lanzamiento o fechas de gira confirmadas. Simplemente nos dejamos llevar y puedo decir con orgullo que no hicimos las cosas porque fueran fáciles, sino porque eran difíciles. Ahora que el álbum está terminado, ¡parece que tomamos tres géneros diferentes y los unimos! De alguna manera se sentía como si estuviéramos sentados en la misma cervecería al aire libre durante décadas y ahora finalmente probamos el pub al otro lado de la calle.

MiM: Escuchando el álbum siento una conexión entre todas las canciones. "How To Shroud Yourself With Night", ¿es un álbum conceptual? ¿De qué tratan los temas líricamente hablando?

LP: Sí, hay un tema recurrente entre todas las pistas. El tema principal del álbum es el deseo de simplemente desaparecer, ser invisible y no tener que lidiar más contigo mismo y con el mundo exterior. Se trata de sombras, de oscuridad y de objetos místicos, que combinan el poder único de la nada. Pero al principio, estaba el título. Cuando a mi hermano Christopher, nuestro antiguo cantante, se le ocurrió, me quedé impresionado. Ser envuelto por la noche es una idea muy oscura y también vino muy bien con mis demos de canciones, que en su mayor parte al principio eran muy doom a lo Paradise Lost. Cuando la oscuridad te rodea durante mucho tiempo, se convierte en una especie de rasgo tuyo, ya no es lo desconocido, sino parte de lo que eres. Cuando uno ve la noche como belleza, el miedo también se desvanece. Christopher y Julian fueron los responsables de la parte de la letra.

MiM: En este disco se acentúa el trabajo del teclado. ¿Quién estaba a cargo? ¿Algún músico invitado a tocar este instrumento?

LP: Sí, mi buen y viejo amigo Benny Richter (Caliban, Emil Bulls) volvió a tocar los teclados, este tipo es un genio. Mientras grabábamos las voces, a veces solo usábamos las pistas del teclado como guía. Están sucediendo muchas cosas en los arreglos. Siempre me ha fascinado el arte de tocar el teclado. Tal vez algún día lancemos algunas de las pistas solo como una versión orquestal, entonces comprenderás que este guitarrista de la banda simplemente destruye todos los sentimientos, ¡risas!

MiM: Oliver, el sonido de la guitarra es grueso, pesado y a veces bastante rápido y melódico. ¿Qué me puedes decir sobre el trabajo específico de grabación y producción musical?

LP: Muchas gracias. Por supuesto, usé mi hermosa ESP Eclipse II blanco con las conocidas pastillas EMG 81 y 60 que están integradas en todas mis guitarras. También las toco principalmente en los shows en vivo. Los amplificadores principales eran Diezel D minor y Mesa Rectifier, mezclados con un rectificador de dos canales Mesa Boogie para el material pesado. También combinamos varios altavoces. Además del Celestion Vintage 30, que todo el mundo usa, también mezclamos altavoces de Eminence (DV77) y Jensen (Nighthawk). Nuestro productor es conocido por ser un nerd de las bocinas, así que nos tomamos nuestro tiempo para probar varios altavoces.

 MiM: La crítica especializada los define como Dark Metal, pero en este disco siento que la banda se acerca más al Doom Metal. ¿Qué piensas? ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto?

LP: Sabes, tengo una familia grande y una casa muy modesta. Así que tuve que despejar mi sala de grabación para mi tercer niño, y el único lugar para descansar era en el baño frente a la tina. Así que me encerré allí y me agaché frente al inodoro con mi iPad y mi guitarra. Espero que esta información no sea mi perdición en tu reseña, ¡ríete! Algunos meses después de que comencé el proceso de escritura, ya tenía muchas ideas de canciones listas que habrían sido una apuesta segura y no me hubiera arriesgado a asustar a un solo comprador. Pero no quería un álbum que no sorprendiera a nadie, que no estuviera a la altura de las expectativas y que no molestara a nadie. Mi idea del disco era exactamente lo contrario, debería sorprender, debería inquietar, debería emocionar. ¡Porque es puto arte y el arte es valiente! Cruzamos las fronteras de los géneros, el álbum llama la atención. Toca, reconforta y cura, pero tengo que advertirte: no es para todo el mundo. Hay personas que sienten la lluvia y otras solo se mojan. ¡Este álbum es para los tentadores, risas! ¿Ya nació GothCore? Si no, algunas de las pistas podrían ser el modelo.

MiM: La voz de Julian a veces encuentra influencias de Fernando Ribeiro (Moonspell), principalmente en canciones como "To Disappear In You" y Peter Steele (Type of Negative) en canciones como "In A Lengthening Shadow". ¿Cuéntame sobre eso?

LP: Sí, gracias por el cumplido, pero no te olvides de Oli Sykes y Nick Holmes. Durante las sesiones del álbum "Bleeding The Stars" en 2018, pude escuchar lo que Julian puede hacer con su voz. Me sorprendió porque simplemente puede cantar cualquier cosa alto, profundo, áspero, gutural. Esta oportunidad me dio la libertad de escribir la música como estaba en mi cabeza, sin pensar si el cantante puede manejarlo o no. Diría que la canción "To Disappear In You", la música en sí incluso me recuerda a veces con una sonrisa a "The Final Countdown". La voz es lo que lo hace tan malditamente pesado. Trae este ambiente Arch Enemy/Dark Tranquility a la mesa. Esta fue la última pista que se escribió para el álbum, por lo que no teníamos espacio para pensar demasiado, y creo que esta es una de las fortalezas de esta canción. ¡Se siente viva, se siente libre…! "In A Longening Shadow", es algo así como una versión pesada de "The Cult" diría yo. La canción trata sobre una sombra cada vez mayor que, por ejemplo, una relación infeliz puede arrojar sobre ti. Una sombra por la que uno es completamente tragado al final.

MiM: Son un grupo formado en 1993 con discos y muchos conciertos en su carrera. Mirando hacia atrás, ¿cómo calificarías el trabajo de la banda todos estos años?

LP: Calificar mi trabajo, uf, apenas puedo decir que siempre hice lo mejor que pude en ese momento y esto es lo que también les enseño a mis hijos, si diste lo mejor de ti, no importa si funciona todo el tiempo. Hay tanta presión por todas partes. Solo tienes una vida hermosa, vívela libre y sin miedo, así que me daría una calificación como "este tipo simplemente cree en lo que está haciendo", ¡o simplemente soy terco, risas! 

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas en este nuevo año?

LP: Acabamos de regresar de una gira de doce shows aquí en Alemania, tocamos en algunos festivales geniales y a principios de septiembre comenzaremos nuestra gira principal por Alemania y Austria con el nuevo álbum. Pero antes que nada, como no he estado mucho tiempo en casa, me iré de vacaciones con mi familia. entonces es hora de empezar a ensayar para la gira, que comienza el 1 de septiembre en Colonia. Planeamos un programa de dos horas y media. En octubre probablemente iremos a Bucarest y Estambul y, a partir de noviembre, me temo que las regulaciones de Corona volverán a ser más estrictas y es por eso que no planeamos nada para estos meses.

MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

LP: No somos la banda que quieres escuchar si tienes momentos divertidos o tomas una copa en un bar de la playa. Somos el tipo de música que deberías tocar cuando tu novia te dejó y odias tu vida. Entonces, si eres ese tipo de persona, toma el nuevo álbum, si no y solo quieres enojar a tus vecinos, dale una vuelta también. The German Dark Metal band Lacrimas Profundere will be releasing their new album “How To Shroud Yourself With Night” on August 26 under the prestigious Steamhammer/SPV record label. Made in Metal talks with Oliver Nikolas, founder, leader and guitar player of the band to learn everything about this album and the history of the band.

 MiM: Hi Oliver! Tell us about the beginnings of the band? 

LP: Hey Raúl, thanks for having us, pleasure to talk with you too, brother. Back in 1993, the idea was born to become a rockstar by founding a band. Now 29 years later I‘ve learned, that it didn’t work out. laughs! Bandname is derived from Latin and describes something like shedding tears. Back in the days we played some shows under the banner 'Dark Eternity' but as we found out, that there was already a band existing in the US we changed the name, but I’ve always thought the testament of a real career was not if an artist could do it for five years or for 10 years. It was more like, could you do it for 20? Could you do it for 29? Yes, we can!

MiM: How To Shroud Yourself With Night (Steamhammer/SPV, 2022) is an album that has excellent production work. Its sound is excellent. How were the recording and production process? Who was its producer? In which recording studio did it take place?

LP: Thanks a lot. Again, we did the recordings and production at Kohlekeller studio with Kohle and Kai (Powerwolf, Benighted). We chose to work with this studio again because we recorded the last album there and really liked the result.  We recorded drums and guitars in the Summer of 2020 and wanted to continue with the vocal sessions a month later but Corona said no and we had to stop production for almost 9 months. 

However, this situation gave us the freedom to re-think everything, change arrangements and vocals and record two new songs. Finally in July 2021 Julian and I returned for two weeks. The studio is in the middle of nowhere. So that meant 14 days of only us and our music. No pressure on release dates or confirmed touring dates. We just let ourselves drift and I can proudly say that we didn't do things because they were easy - but because they were difficult. Now as the album is finished, it feels like we took three different genres and slammed them all together! It somehow felt like we were sitting in the same beer garden for decades and now we finally tried the pub across the street.

MiM: Listening to the album I feel a connection between all the songs. How To Shroud Yourself With Night is a concept album? What are the themes of Lyrically speaking?

LP: Yeah, there is a reoccurring theme between all the tracks. The main theme of the album is the desire to simply disappear, to be invisible and to not have to deal with yourself and the outside world anymore. It’s about shadows, darkness, and mystical objects, which combine the unique power of nothingness. But at first, there was the title. When my brother Christopher, our former singer, came up with it, I was just blown away. Getting shrouded by the night is a very dark idea and it also went very well with my song demos, which for the most part in the beginning were very Paradise Lost doomy-driven. When darkness surrounds you for a long time, it becomes kind of a trait of you, it is no longer the unknown but part of who you are. When one sees the night as beauty, fear also vanishes. Christopher and Julian were responsible for the lyrics part. 

MiM: In this disc the work of the keyboard is accentuated. Who was in charge? Any musician invited to play this instrument?

LP: Yes, my good old friend Benny Richter (Caliban, Emil Bulls) did the keyboards again, this guy is a genius. As we recorded the vocals we sometimes only used the keyboard tracks as a guide. There is so much going on in the arrangements. I’m always fascinated by the art of his keyboard playing. Perhaps one day we will release some of the tracks only as an orchestral version, then you will understand that this guitar player in the band simply destroys all of the feelings, (laughs)

MiM: Oliver the guitar sound is thick, heavy and sometimes quite fast and melodic. What can you tell me about the specific work of recording and musical production?

LP: Thank you so much. Of course I used my beautiful white ESP Eclipse II with the well-known EMG 81 and 60 pickups that are built into all my guitars. I also play them mostly at the live shows. The main amps were Diezel D minor and Mesa Rectifier, mixed with a Mesa Boogie 2-channel rectifier for the heavy stuff. We also combined various speakers. In addition to the Celestion Vintage 30, which everyone uses, we also mixed speakers from Eminence (DV77) and Jensen (Nighthawk). Our producer is known to be a speaker nerd, so we took our time to test a number of speakers.

MiM: Specialized critics define them as Dark Metal, but on this album, I feel that the band is closer to Doom Metal. What do you think? What can you tell me about it?

LP: You know, I have a big family and a very modest home. So I had to clear my recording room for child no. 3, and the only place for me to rest was in the bathroom in front of the tub. So I locked myself in there and crouched in front of the toilet with my iPad and guitar. I hope this information will not be my downfall in your review, laugh! Some months after I started the writing process I already had a lot of song ideas ready that would have been a safe bet and I wouldn't have risked scaring away even one buyer. But I didn't want an album that wouldn't surprise anyone, that wouldn't completely live up to expectations and wouldn't bother anyone. My idea of the record was the exact opposite, it should surprise, it should disturb, it should thrill. Because it's fucking art and art is brave!  We crossed the borders of genres, the album creates attention. It touches, comforts you, and heals, but I have to warn you: it’s not for everybody. There are people that feel the rain and others only get wet. This album is for the feelers, (laughs) Is GothCore already born? If not, some of the tracks could be the blueprint.

MiM:  Julian's voice sometimes finds influences from Fernando Ribeiro (Moonspell), mainly on songs like "To Disappear In You" and Peter Steele (Type of Negative) on songs like "In A Lengthening Shadow". Tell me about it?

LP: Yeah, thanks for the compliment but don’t forget Oli Sykes and Nick Holmes. During the sessions for the „Bleeding The Stars“ album back in 2018, I was able to hear what Julian can do with his voice. I was amazed cause he can simply sing anything. high, deep, harsh, guttural. This opportunity gave me the freedom now to write it as it was in my head, without thinking about whether the singer can handle it or not. In the song "To Disappear In You" I would say, the music itself even reminds me sometimes of "The final countdown", (laughs). The voice is what makes it so damn heavy. It brings this Arch Enemy/Dark Tranquillity vibe to the table. This was the last track that was written for the album, so we had no room for overthinking, and I believe this is one of the strengths of this track. It feels alive, it feels free…! "In A Lengthening Shadow", is something like a heavy version of "The Cult" I would say. The song deals with an ever-growing shadow, which for example an unhappy relationship can throw over you. A shadow by which one is completely swallowed up in the end. 

MiM: They are a group formed in 1993 with albums and many concerts in their career. Looking back, how would you rate the band's work all these years?

LP: Rate my work, ugh, I can barely say I always did the best I could give in that moment and this is what I also teach my children, if you gave your best, it doesn’t matter if it works out every time. There is so much pressure all around. You only have one beautiful life, live it free not scared, so I would give myself a rating like "this guy simply believes in what he’s doing", or I’m just stubborn, laughs! 

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this Album? Concerts or tours scheduled in this new year?

LP: We just came back from a 12-show tour here in Germany, played some very cool festivals, and at the beginning of September, we’ll start our headliner tour through Germany and Austria with the new album. But first of all, cause I haven’t been at home for long, I will go on vacation with my family. then it's time to start rehearsing for the tour, which starts on September 1st in Cologne. We plan a two-and-a-half-hour program. In October we'll probably go to Bucharest and Istanbul and from November on I'm afraid the Corona regulations will become stricter again and that's why we don't plan anything for these months.

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.

LP: We‘re not the band you wanna play if you have funny moments, or have umbrella drinks at a beach bar. We’re the type of music you should play when your girlfriend left you and you hate your life. So if you are that kind of person, grab the new album, if not and you only wanna piss your neighbors off, give it a spin also.
