La leyenda alemana del Thrash Metal Sodom lanzará el álbum '40 years At War - The Greatest Hell of Sodom' a través de Steamhammer/SPV el 28 de octubre. Excelente oportunidad para Made In Metal, para hablar con Tom "Angelripper", líder, fundador, bajista y vocalista de la banda para conocer más detalles de este lanzamiento.

S: Originalmente habíamos planeado un álbum en vivo para nuestro aniversario. Pero no fue posible hacer espectáculos adecuados debido a Corona. Entonces se nos ocurrió la idea de elegir un título de cada álbum y luego volver a grabarlo. A nuestra discográfica también le gustó mucho esta idea, así que volvimos al material anterior.

MiM: A pesar de haber grabado todas las canciones para este recopilatorio, el sonido de las canciones no perdió su esencia. Sonido áspero, rápido y ochentero. Puro Thrash Metal!! ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?

S: Grabamos todas las canciones en nuestra sala de ensayo. Montamos un pequeño estudio allí en los últimos años. Nuestro baterista Toni está muy familiarizado con la tecnología y grabó todo. Toni también produjo nuestro último álbum de estudio.

MiM: Tom, ¿por qué apostar por canciones que nunca o muy pocas veces se han tocado en vivo?

S: Era importante para nosotros no solo hacer los títulos populares, sino también las canciones que supuestamente son menos conocidas o subestimadas. Sin embargo, intentamos conservar la crudeza y brutalidad de los originales, pero claro, grabados con mayor precisión. Creo que el espíritu de los viejos tiempos sigue ahí.

MiM: Tom, la portada de este álbum es una pelea entre el primer EP de la banda "In the Sign of Evil" y el álbum "Genesis XIX". ¿Es eso así?

S: Eliran Kantor tuvo esta idea. Quería unir las dos figuras icónicas de nuestra historia en una sola imagen. Pero nadie sabe cómo termina la pelea entre ambos, el secreto sigue abierto. Lo hizo muy bien. Eliran ya había diseñado la portada de nuestro disco "In War and Pieces" y siempre estuvimos en contacto.

MiM: 40 décadas en la escena del metal es bastante tiempo. Si tuvieras que juzgar críticamente la trayectoria de la banda, ¿qué les dirías a nuestros lectores?

S: Creo que hicimos todo bien. No me arrepiento de nada. Siempre había altibajos. En retrospectiva, lamento mucho los muchos cambios de formación, pero eso era inevitable. Pero sin mis antiguos camaradas de armas nunca hubiéramos llegado tan lejos y les estaré eternamente en deuda. Lo más importante son mis fans, sin los cuales la banda nunca hubiera existido.

MiM: ¿Cuál es el secreto para mantenerse con vida durante tantos años en el complicado mundo de la industria musical?

S: Eso es muy fácil. Siempre hicimos exactamente lo que queríamos y donde nos divertíamos haciéndolo. Nadie nos había dicho nunca por dónde debía ir el viaje. Hacemos música principalmente para nuestros fans. La compañía discográfica es responsable de las ventas y la publicidad. Nunca nos hemos puesto en el control estricto de la industria de la música y siempre hemos tratado de mantenernos autónomos. A pesar de todos los contratos, hemos mantenido un poco de libertad. Con muchas otras bandas fue exactamente lo contrario.

MiM: Tom, en este disco se nota mucho lo bien que eres como vocalista, demuestras que estás en excelentes condiciones. ¿Cómo logras mantener esa crudeza y esa fuerza en tu voz a pesar de los años?

S: No puedo explicar eso exactamente. Tampoco hice ningún entrenamiento especial para ello. Pero después de cuatro décadas, he aprendido a conservar mi energía ya no beber alcohol antes del espectáculo. Aunque soy fumador, me las arreglo para actuar en el escenario durante más de dos horas.

MiM: Sodom es una de las pocas bandas que siempre ha mantenido un sonido áspero, rápido y agresivo. ¿Me gustaría saber si desde un principio ya tenían claro el sonido que tendría la banda?

S: Eso nos quedó claro desde el principio. Nos inspiramos en Venom y todavía lo somos. Cuanto más duro, mejor. Nos encanta esta música. Todo está arraigado en nuestros corazones. Por supuesto, también tenemos muchas melodías en nuestras canciones, pero la pesadez aún tiene que ser la prioridad. Solo tienes que desarrollar el coraje para manifestarlo una y otra vez. Tampoco queremos decepcionar a nuestros fans.

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?

S: Haremos una pequeña gira por Alemania a finales de año y ya tenemos muchos festivales planeados para el próximo año. Miramos hacia delante y esperamos que no vuelva a ocurrir nada. También estamos planeando conciertos en América del Sur y, con suerte, nuevamente en los EE. UU.

MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

German Thrash Metal legends Sodom will release the album '40 years At War - The Greatest Hell of Sodom' through the prestigious Steamhammer/SPV record label on October 28th. Excellent opportunity for Made In Metal, Spain to talk with Tom "Angelripper", leader, founder, bassist, and vocalist of the band to learn more details about this release.

MiM: 40 years At War - The Greatest Hell of Sodom (Steamhammer/SPV, 2022) is the best way to celebrate these 40 years. I'm sure all the fans will appreciate it. How did the idea come about?

S: Originally we had planned a live album for our anniversary. But it was not possible to do suitable shows due to Corona. So we came up with the idea of choosing a title from each album and then re-recording it. Our record company also liked this idea very much and so we went back to the old material.

MiM: Despite having recorded all the songs for this compilation, the sound of the songs did not lose its essence. Rough, fast and eighties sound. Pure Thrash Metal!! How were the recording and production process?

S: We recorded all the songs in our rehearsal room. We set up a small studio there in recent years. Our drummer Toni is very familiar with the technology and recorded everything. Toni also produced our last studio album.

MiM: Tom, why bet on songs that have never or very rarely been played live?

S: It was important to us not only to make the popular titles but also songs that are supposedly less well-known or underrated. However, we tried to retain the rawness and brutality of the originals, but of course, recorded them more precisely. I think the spirit of the old days is still there.

MiM: Tom, the cover of this album is a fight between the first EP of the band "In the Sign of Evil" and the album "Genesis XIX". Is that so?

S: The artist Eliran Kantor had this idea. He wanted to unite the two iconic figures of our story in one picture. But nobody knows how the fight between the two ends, the secret remains open. He did that very well. Eliran had already designed the cover for our album "In war and pieces" and we were always in contact.

MiM: 40 decades in the metal scene is quite a long time. If you were to critically judge the trajectory of the band, what would you say to our readers?

S: I think we did everything right. I regret nothing. There were always ups and downs. In retrospect, I'm very sorry about the many line-up changes, but that was inevitable. But without my former comrades-in-arms, we would never have gotten this far and I am forever indebted to them. The most important thing is my fans, without whom the band would never have existed.

MiM: What is the secret to stay alive for so many years in the complicated world of the music industry?

S: That is very easy. We always did exactly what we wanted and where we had fun doing it. Nobody had ever told us where the journey should go. We make music primarily for our fans. The record company is responsible for sales and advertising. We have never put ourselves in the tight grip of the music industry and have always tried to remain autonomous. Despite all the contracts, we have kept a little bit of freedom. With many other bands, it was exactly the opposite

MiM: Tom, on this album it is very noticeable how well you are as a vocalist, you show that you are in excellent condition. How do you manage to maintain that rawness and that strength in your voice despite the years?

S: I can't explain that exactly. I didn't do any special training for it either. But after four decades, I've learned to conserve my energy and not to drink alcohol before the show. Even though I'm a smoker, I still manage to perform on stage for over two hours.

MiM: Sodom is one of the few bands that has always maintained a rough, fast, and aggressive sound. I would like to know if from the beginning you were already very clear about the sound that the band would have.

S: That was clear to us from the start. We were inspired by Venom and still are. The harder the better. We love this music. It's all ingrained in our hearts. Of course, we also have a lot of melodies in our songs, but the heaviness still has to be the priority. You just have to develop the courage to manifest it again and again. We don't want to disappoint our fans either.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album?

S: We're going on a small tour of Germany at the end of the year and already have many festivals planned for next year. We look ahead and hope that nothing comes up again. We are also planning concerts in South America and hopefully in the USA again.
