La banda finlandesa, Insomnium con más de 20 años de carrera lanzará su nuevo álbum 'Anno 1696' el próximo 24 de febrero  a través de Century Media Records. Excelente oportunidad para que Made in Metal hable con Niilo Sevänen, bajista y vocal, para conocer todo sobre este álbum y también un poco de la historia de la banda.

MiM: ¿Cuéntame sobre los inicios de la banda? ¿Cómo surge la idea de crear la banda? ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás de su nombre?

Niilo: La banda se formó en 1997 cuando solo teníamos 16 o 17 años y estábamos en la misma escuela. Solo queríamos tocar heavy metal juntos. Supongo que así es como empiezan la mayoría de las bandas. El nombre se eligió más tarde del diccionario latino porque sonaba genial.

MiM: ¿Ya tenías muy claro el sonido que tendría la banda cuando empezaste a grabar “In the Halls of Awaiting”?

N: No, estábamos aprendiendo todo el tiempo. Nunca antes habíamos hecho un álbum, así que todo fue prueba y error. Por supuesto que queríamos que el disco sonara tan bien como aquellas bandas que nos habían gustado en los 90. Sentenced, Amorphis, In Flames y Dark Tranquillity.

MiM: El álbum debut de la banda, "In the Halls of Awaiting", este año marca su vigésimo aniversario. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de aquellos tiempos? ¿Sigues tocando en conciertos canciones de este álbum?

N: Lo grabamos en el verano de 2001 y fue un momento increíble. Prácticamente vivíamos en el estudio y festejábamos mucho. Hacer un álbum fue emocionante, nuevo y genial. Todavía a veces tocamos algunas de estas canciones más antiguas en vivo.

MiM: ¡¡'Anno 1696' (Century Media Records, 2023) tiene un sonido increíble!! Nos lleva a una atmósfera que te envuelve y te lleva a través de las canciones del álbum a través de una gran historia. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?

N: ¡Gracias! El álbum fue mezclado y parcialmente diseñado por Jaime Gómez Arellano y nosotros mismos, la banda, fuimos los productores. Grabamos la batería en Sonic Pump Studios en Helsinki, la voz y el bajo con Teemu Aalto y las guitarras nosotros mismos. 

MiM: Escuchando el álbum siento una conexión entre todas las canciones. ¿'Anno 1696' es un álbum conceptual? ¿De qué tratan las canciones, líricamente hablando?

N: “Anno 1696” es un álbum conceptual que se basa en mi historia corta, sorprendentemente ambientada en el año 1696 y en los bosques de Finlandia. Tenía la historia más o menos en mi cabeza hace unos años, así que ya en ese entonces hablamos con los chicos de que este podría ser el próximo concepto de álbum. Y que una historia tan oscura y lúgubre también requeriría una música más fría y ennegrecida. Terminé la historia en el verano de 2021 y la mayor parte del material se compuso después de eso. Claramente, la música se convirtió en la banda sonora de esta historia. Supongo que todos entramos en el mismo estado de ánimo y atmósfera al componer, y creo que la historia y las melodías encajan muy bien. Es más rudo y feroz que nuestro álbum anterior, "Heart Like a Grave", por lo que tal vez esté más cerca del estilo de "Winter's Gate". 

MiM: Es raro ver una banda de Viking Metal/Folk con tres guitarras. ¿Crees que la oportunidad de tener tres guitarras en la banda le dará más fuerza y poder a las canciones de la banda?

N: No creo que seamos una banda de "viking metal" si hemos hecho un álbum conceptual en el pasado que trata sobre la historia de la era vikinga. Tenemos tres guitarristas y cuatro compositores en la banda y eso significa una mejor fuerza creativa en la composición de canciones. Cuando tocamos en vivo, generalmente hay dos guitarras en el escenario ya que Ville Friman no puede hacer muchas giras.

MiM: En este disco tienen varios invitados interesantes. Cuéntame cómo surgió la idea y cómo fue trabajar con ellos.

N: Con la canción “White Christ”, cuando tocamos los riffs por primera vez en los ensayos, todos pensamos que tenían esa vibra de Rotting Christ. Así que terminamos pidiéndole a Sakis que formara parte de ella, ya que todos amamos esa banda ya en los años 90. Y se convirtió en una de las mejores canciones del álbum y quizás también en el mejor video musical que hemos hecho.

Con “Godforsaken” tuvimos algunos ejemplos de voces femeninas chamánicas en la demostración, pero luego, cuando le pedimos a la renombrada cantante finlandesa Johanna Kurkela que hiciera su magia, elevó la canción a otro nivel. Una actuación tan increíble de ella. Primera vez que Insomnium usa voces femeninas.

MiM: ¿Cuatro compositores? ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo de la composición de la música, es un proceso colectivo, o solo uno o quizás dos son los que componen en la banda?

N: Tenemos cuatro compositores en la banda, así que el baterista es el único que no hace eso. Recientemente he hecho la mayoría de las letras, pero Ville también ha escrito muchas canciones en el pasado. Con este álbum, Markus Vanhala fue claramente el compositor más activo.

MiM: Excelente diseño del álbum. ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás del diseño de la portada?

N: Es el ilustrador y dibujante de cómics finlandés Sami Makkonen que ha trabajado, por ejemplo, para DC Comics en EE. UU. La portada habla naturalmente sobre nuestro concepto aquí, la gran historia que estamos contando con este álbum.

MiM: Los pasajes melódicos y acústicos en canciones como "The Unrest" son maravillosos. ¿Has pensado en regalar a tus fans un disco acústico?

N: ¡Gracias! Nuestro EP anterior "Argent Moon" fue a propósito un poco más suave y apacible. ¡Veamos si queremos volvernos totalmente acústicos en algún momento!

MiM: ¿Están documentados los juicios a las brujas de Torsåker, el asesinato de 70 mujeres y el canibalismo en esta zona o las letras son recreaciones de la historia? Te pregunto porque siempre pensamos que las mujeres eran un tesoro en las tierras nórdicas?

N: Este incidente es un hecho histórico real que ocurrió en Suecia en la década de 1670. En las cacerías de brujas de Europa, las víctimas eran en su mayoría mujeres en todos los países. Estos son los eventos históricos realmente oscuros y trágicos que han inspirado la creación de este álbum.

MiM: Son una banda con varios años de formación con discos y muchos conciertos en su carrera. Mirando hacia atrás, ¿cómo calificarías el trabajo de la banda todos estos años?

N: Debemos estar muy orgullosos de lo que hemos hecho. La banda tiene veintiséis años este año y sigue siendo fuerte.

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?

N: Giras y festivales! Tenemos algunos festivales en España en verano de 2023 así que ¡ojo!

The Viking Metal/ Folk/ Post Doom band INSOMNIUM with more than 20 years of career will be releasing their new album “Anno 1696” on February 24 under the prestigious Century Media Records label. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk to Niilo Sevänen, bass ando vocal, to learn everything about this album and the history of the band.

MiM: Tell me about the beginnings of the band. How did the idea of creating the band come about? What is the concept behind its name?

Niilo: Band was formed in 1997 when we were just 16-17 years old and in the same school. We just wanted to play heavy metal together. I guess that’s how most bands begin. The name was later chosen from the Latin dictionary since it sounded cool.

MiM: Did you have already been very clear about the sound that the band would have when you started recording “In the Halls of Awaiting?

N: No, we were learning all the time. We had never done an album before so it was all trial and error. Of course, we wanted the album to sound as good as those bands that we had liked in the 90s. Sentenced, Amorphis, In Flames, and Dark Tranquillity.

MiM: The band's debut album "In the Halls of Awaiting" just this year marks its 20th anniversary. What memories do you have of those times? Do you still play in concert songs from this album?

N: We recorded it in the summer of 2001 and it was an awesome time. We practically lived in the studio and partied a lot. Making the album was exciting and new and cool. We still sometimes play some of these oldest songs live.

MiM: “Anno 1696” (Century Media Records, 2023) has an amazing sound!! It takes us into an atmosphere that surrounds you and takes you through the songs on the album through a great story. How was the recording and production process?

N: Thanks! Album was mixed and partly engineered by Jaime Gomez Arellano and we ourselves the band were the producer. We recorded drums in Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, vocals and bass with Teemu Aalto, and guitars ourselves.

MiM: Listening to the album I feel a connection between all the songs. "Anno 1696" is a concept album? What are the songs about, lyrically speaking?

N: “Anno 1696” is a concept album that is based on my short story – surprisingly set in the year 1696 and backwoods of Finland. I had the story roughly in my head already a few years ago, so already back then we talked with the boys that this could be the next album concept. And that such a dark and dreary story would require colder and blackened music as well. I finished the story in the summer of 2021 and most of the material was composed after that. So clearly the music became the soundtrack for this story. I guess we all went into the same mood and atmosphere when composing, and I think the story and the melodies fit together very well. It is rougher and fiercer than our previous album "Heart Like a Grave", so maybe closer to "Winter’s Gate" style.

MiM: It's rare to see a Viking Metal/Folk band with three guitars. Do you think that the opportunity to have three guitars in the band will give more strength and power to the band's songs?

N: I don’t think we are a “Viking metal” band if we have done one concept album in the past that dealt with some Viking-era history. We have three guitarists and four composers in the band and that means better creative force in songwriting. When we play live it is usually two guitars on stage since Ville Friman can’t tour that much.

MiM: In this album, they have several interesting guests. Tell me about it how the idea came up and how was working with them.

N: With the song “White Christ”, when we first played the riffs at the rehearsals we all thought that they had this Rotting Christ vibe. So we ended up asking Sakis to be part of it since we all loved that band already in the 90s. And it became one of the best songs on the album and also maybe the coolest music video we have done.

With “Godforsaken” we had some sample shamanistic female vocals in the demo but then when we asked the renowned Finnish singer Johanna Kurkela to do her magic she elevated the song to another level. Such an amazing performance from her. First time ever that Insomnium uses female vocals.

MiM: Four composers? How is the creative process of the composition of the music, is it a collective process, or only one or maybe two are the ones that compose in the band?

N: We have four composers in the band, so the drummer is the only one not doing that. I have recently done most of the lyrics but Ville has also written many songs in the past. With this album, Markus Vanhala was clearly the most active composer.

MiM: Excellent album design. What is the concept behind the cover design?

N: Is the Finnish illustrator and comics artist Sami Makkonen who has worked for example for DC Comics in USA. The cover naturally tells about our concept here, the big story that we are speaking with this album.

MiM: The melodic and acoustic passages in songs like "The Unrest" are wonderful. Have you thought about giving your fans an acoustic record?

N: Thanks! Our previous EP “Argent Moon” was on purpose a bit softer and mellow. Let’s see if we want to go fully acoustic at some point!

MiM: Are the Torsåker witches trials, the killing of 70 women, and the cannibalism in this area documented or the lyrics are recreations of the story? I ask you because we always thought women were treasures in the Nordic lands.

N: This incident is an actual historical event that happened in Sweden in the 1670s. In the witch hunts in Europe, the victims were mostly women in every country. These are the real dark and tragic historical events that have inspired making this album.

MiM: They are a band with several years of training with records and many concerts in their career. Looking back, how would you rate the work of the band all these years?

N: We should be very proud of what we have done. The band is twenty-six years old this year and still going strong.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album?

N: Tours and festivals! We have some festivals in Spain in the summer of 2023 so watch out!
