"El Sonido es más Deathmetal, sin perder las partes melódicas y progresivas"

Los death metaleros austriacos, Altar of I lanzaron su nuevo álbum 'Human Resources' el 3 de marzo a través de Art Gates Records. Made in Metal habla con su vocalista Georg Axmann para que nos cuente más detalles de este disco.

MiM: ¿Cuéntame sobre los inicios de la banda? ¿Cómo surge la idea de formar la banda? ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás del nombre de la banda?

AoI: En primer lugar, ¡gracias por la entrevista! Algunos muchachos formaron una banda en 2015, tocaron algunos shows y luego hicieron una pausa. Todos tocaron en otras bandas también. Luego, después de aproximadamente un año, decidieron retomarlo y reformaron la banda. Toqué en otra banda con su baterista (que luego cambió a tocar la guitarra) y me preguntó si quería unirme a ellos como segundo vocalista, lo cual hice. Luego, Ossian se unió a la formación como el nuevo baterista y cambiamos el nombre anterior de la banda a Altar of I. Desde entonces, sucedieron muchos cambios en la formación, por lo que Ossian y yo somos los únicos miembros originales, aunque somos no realmente, si tenemos en cuenta que ha habido otra formación antes. Pero desde el inicio de Altar of I fuimos nosotros los que llevamos la antorcha durante todo el camino.

Fui yo a quien se le ocurrió el nombre y tenía una idea de lo que representaba el nombre y sigue siendo el núcleo de la banda. Nos negamos a elogiar a nadie más que a nosotros. No alabamos a dioses, ídolos, celebridades, influencers, dinero ni nada. No nos importa demasiado lo que digan o piensen los demás. Tomamos nuestras propias decisiones para encontrarnos a nosotros mismos y nuestros caminos. Por supuesto que no vivimos nuestras vidas en una ignorancia ciega sobre los sentimientos o necesidades de otras personas, pero al ver en qué dirección va la sociedad, nos adentramos y escuchamos nuestra propia voz y aclaramos lo que es correcto para nosotros.

MiM: Me gustaría saber si desde un principio ya tienen una idea clara de cómo era el sonido de la banda.

AoI: Al principio, la banda tocaba Metalcore, con influencias más pesadas y coros amapola. Cuando me uní a la banda quería enfocarme en el lado más pesado agregando gruñidos, pero al mismo tiempo me gustaban las partes melódicass y armónicas, pero quería que sonara más maduro y progresivo (y menos pop). Desde entonces, incluso cuando nuestro sonido ha cambiado un poco a lo largo de los años, nunca supimos si podrías ponernos en un solo género. Entonces, decidimos usar Metal como descripción y dejar que otros decidan dónde nos ven. Cuando me convertí en el único cantante, el sonido se volvió más Deathmetal, pero nunca perdimos las partes melódicas y progresivas. Algunos dirían, somos Metalcore, también escuchamos el término Progressive Metalcore cuando hablaban de nosotros (que personalmente me gusta), otros nos consideran Melodic Death,....al final creo que somos todo eso más algunos otros.

MiM: "Human Resources" (Art Gates Records, 2023) tiene un sonido espectacular!! Nos lleva a una atmósfera que te envuelve y te lleva a través de las canciones del álbum a través de una gran historia. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción? ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar? ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la producción musical del álbum?

AoI: Gracias, eso es lo que queríamos crear: una atmósfera oscura y lúgubre. Grabamos todo nosotros mismos, nunca llegamos a un estudio. Cuando grabamos nuestro EP debut, nuestro exguitarrista Phil grabó todo, pero dejó la banda justo después de que empezáramos a trabajar en el álbum. Entonces, nosotros, los demás, tuvimos que hacernos cargo de todo y aprender a trabajar con todos los programas. Mucho de eso se grabó en mi sótano, donde también está nuestra sala de ensayo. Debido al Covid y las estrictas restricciones (no poder reunirse) algunas partes también se grabaron en casa de todos. Y sí, Covid también fue una de las razones por las que tardamos tanto. Junto a él, como se mencionó anteriormente, tuvimos que reemplazar a un guitarrista, buscar un nuevo espacio para ensayar, ... Hasta cierto punto, este tiempo fue perfecto para grabar un álbum, ya que teníamos mucho tiempo y no había shows en vivo. , pero apenas podíamos reunirnos y practicar, había mucha espera, aprendizaje, etc. Pero grabar el álbum nos ayudó como banda a superar este momento, supongo. En una canción incluso canto sobre el Covid pero no diré en cuál.

MiM: Escuchando el álbum siento una conexión entre todas las canciones. ¿Es "Human Resources" un álbum conceptual? ¿De qué tratan las canciones, líricamente hablando?

AoI: Correcto, es un álbum conceptual que se enmarca en esta historia del Wendigo, que para nosotros representa el miedo, el abuso de poder, la codicia, la mentira, la corrupción, todos los efectos secundarios negativos de la sociedad, el capitalismo, la política, la religión, ...´Human Resources´ para nosotros es un título más que ambiguo. El término se usa en economía y describe al ser humano como un recurso, al igual que el petróleo, la madera y otros. Entonces, para ellos no somos más que una herramienta a utilizar para su trabajo y su provecho. La cual podemos ver en todas partes, esta no es una visión distópica, lamentablemente es la realidad y ha estado dando forma a nuestras vidas durante mucho tiempo. El Wendigo también se alimenta de humanos y crece con cada ser humano que come. Entonces, el miedo a eso lo hace incluso crecer más grande y más fuerte. Al final, nosotros, porque tenemos tanto miedo de que nos coman vivos, comernos a nosotros mismos y a los demás. Pero, en el lado más positivo, los humanos también son fuente de cosas buenas, de arte, compasión, cuidado, rebelión y no quiero que suene demasiado patético, pero también amor en todas sus variantes, que también puede llevar a muchas cosas buenas.

MiM: Escuchando el disco siento marcadas influencias del Metal Progresivo y en ocasiones del Deathcore. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto?

AoI: Soy un gran fanático del metal progresivo (especialmente Between The Buried And Me, Haken, el viejo Opeth, Mastodon, etc.) y me gusta cantar en diferentes estilos y con Altar of I pude traer esas influencias a la mezcla. Pero todos los miembros, antiguos o actuales, tienen afinidad por la música progresiva (o experimental), por lo que tiene sentido que también permitamos que esas influencias se manifiesten en nuestra música. Respecto al Deathcore no diría que nos influye mucho. Escucho algunas bandas de ese género (especialmente las originales), por lo que puede tener algunas influencias ligeras, pero también escucho Death metal (brutal) (como Aborted), por lo que también podría ser este. Y también escuchamos muchas bandas de Tech Death, también aquellas con elementos progresivos, así que supongo que todo eso brilla en nuestra música y sonido.

MiM: Normalmente, las bandas de Death Metal no lanzan discos por tanto tiempo. Este álbum tendrá 16 canciones. Eso habla del buen momento creativo en el que se encuentra la banda. ¿Pero no crees que rompen un poco con la estructura creada por el género respecto a sacar discos con pocas canciones?

AoI: Normalmente, ninguna banda lanza discos tan largos. Y todavía hay canciones que nunca hemos grabado, así que estamos sentados sobre algún material que aún no se ha usado porque no encajaba con el resto del material. Sabemos que no es común lanzar un álbum así, pero de nuevo, no nos importa mucho la conformidad y nos gustaron todas las canciones, así que ¿por qué retenerlas? Estamos empezando a trabajar en los próximos proyectos pronto y ya tenemos muchas ideas. Pero el próximo álbum no será tan enorme. Preferiremos centrarnos en las ideas principales para que quede más comprimido.

Pero no es que tenga 16 canciones que suenan todas parecidas. Hay algunos momentos bastante tranquilos y atmosféricos, donde puedes tomar un pequeño descanso entre ellos y también ayudan a crear ese sonido general que logramos.

MiM: ¿Quién es el cantante invitado en la canción Beauty Beast?

AoI: Su nombre es Anja Sattler y ella canta en una banda donde nuestro baterista Ossian también toca la batería. Sabíamos que queríamos tener al menos una cantante invitada en este álbum y la canción "Beauty Beast" era la canción ideal para incluir una voz femenina. Así que la probamos y su voz era perfecta para eso. Estamos muy contentos con el resultado.

MiM: Me llama la atención el exquisito trabajo orquestal en temas como "Arkanus". ¿Cómo surgió la idea de utilizar arreglos orquestales en este álbum?

AoI: Para todas las orquestaciones trabajamos con un amigo, Bernd Münzer (también tocó en una banda conmigo y nuestro guitarrista original). También nos ayudó antes y es un genio cuando se trata de cosas así. Entonces, al final hizo todas las claves, muestras, orquestaciones y demás en el álbum. Ya se convirtió en una especie de sexto miembro de la banda. Por lo general, Ossian escribe algo en la computadora, se lo enviamos a Bernd, le decimos cómo creemos que debería sonar, qué atmósfera debería tener la canción y el resto es solo su gran trabajo. Cuando pensamos que las ideas de Ossian suenan bien, sabemos que Bernd va a hacer algo grandioso y siempre esperamos su aporte. Es seguro decir que continuaremos trabajando con él en el futuro.

MiM: El nombre de la primera pista del álbum es "Wiindigookaanzhimowin". ¿Qué significa?

AoI: Cuando supe que el Wendigo sería la portada, investigué un poco y también encontré esto, que es una especie de baile ceremonial para protegerse del Wendigo. Traté de mencionar el tema de Wendigo y la cultura nativa americana de vez en cuando. La última canción, por ejemplo, trata sobre un hombre conocido como Gerónimo (Goyaałé en idioma cherokee) que luchó contra los invasores españoles. El título de una canción instrumental también es una referencia a ellos, luego, por supuesto, está la canción "Wendigod" y así sucesivamente.

MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo de la composición de la música, es un proceso colectivo, o solo uno o quizás dos son los que componen en la banda?

AoI: Al principio teníamos cuatro compositores, incluido Ossian, que todavía escribe la mayor parte de la música. Pero el resto se involucra cada vez más y en cada etapa de la banda todos pueden contribuir, cambiar estructuras, generar ideas, etc. Somos una banda muy democrática y al final todos deberían estar contentos con el resultado. Deberíamos divertirnos tocando nuestra propia música. Marvin ha ido agregando más y más ideas y Alex, siendo la última incorporación a la banda, también agregó una canción al álbum ("Ex Umbra In Solem"), que queríamos, para que también haya algo de sus ideas. . Aun así, al final todos aportamos algo más que nuestros instrumentos. A veces uno escribe una canción con cierta idea o intención y al final suena completamente diferente por la influencia personal de cada uno. En el próximo álbum queremos abordar todo de manera diferente. Queremos que todos participen en cada paso, no solo en la música sino también en las letras, etc. 

También es la primera vez que tenemos una formación estable desde hace algunos años, por lo que podemos empezar desde cero y hacer nuestra música, sin reliquias de los ex miembros. Pero, por supuesto, seguimos siendo nuestra principal influencia, siempre miramos hacia atrás en lo que hemos hecho antes de mirar hacia adelante. 

MiM: Excelente diseño de portada de álbum. ¿Quién estuvo a cargo del diseño? ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás del diseño de la portada?

AoI: Esta obra de arte fue conceptualizada por nuestro baterista con su hermana Alix Gratzer y trabajamos con varios artistas, especialmente Christina Hartenberger, quien hizo gran parte del diseño. Ella había hecho trabajos para nosotros antes y también actúa en algunos de nuestros videos, por lo que ella, junto a Alix, es otro apoyo importante para la banda.

Intentamos hacer un diseño único que represente los temas principales del álbum y las canciones. También usamos las estructuras que también aparecen en nuestros videos musicales. El concepto detrás de la portada era un retrato de alimentar a los inocentes del pecho de los corruptos.

MiM: Son una banda con varios años de formación con discos y muchos conciertos en su carrera. Mirando hacia atrás, ¿cómo calificarías el trabajo de la banda todos estos años?

AoI: A veces pienso que no hemos hecho mucho en los últimos siete años desde nuestra formación. Pero, de nuevo, tenemos que tener cuidado con quién nos comparamos. Hacemos todo como un pasatiempo y las cosas toman más tiempo cuando todos están trabajando a pleno rendimiento y tenemos poco tiempo libre. Teniendo en cuenta que hicimos mucho. Somos muy productivos cuando se trata de escribir canciones y simplemente nos gusta crear ideas para videos, etc. Y debido a que hacemos muchas cosas nosotros mismos, por un lado, a veces toma algo de tiempo producir algo, pero por otro lado, no lo hacemos. No hay que gastar demasiado dinero. Grabamos un EP, teníamos algunos videos. Luego hicimos un sencillo, luego otro y luego otro. Y tomó algunos años terminar el álbum, pero al final grabamos dieciséis canciones y ya produjimos varios videos. Y hay más por venir en un futuro próximo. Todavía no hemos terminado con el álbum. Y ahora, después de un descanso más largo de los shows en vivo, comenzamos a tocar y surgen nuevos conciertos de vez en cuando. Nos encanta escribir nuevas canciones, grabar ellos, hacemos videos pero también nos encanta tocar en vivo. Creo que hicimos todo eso bien en el pasado, nos gustan casi todas las canciones que escribimos en el pasado, así que no hay nada de qué arrepentirse.

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienen para promocionar este álbum? 

AoI: Los planes son: tocar en vivo tanto como sea posible, vender algunos CD y merchandising. Hacer felices a nosotros mismos y a las personas que aprecian lo que estamos haciendo.

Habrá algunos espectáculos más y todavía estamos planeando. No hay gira hasta ahora, esto es difícil de planificar ya que todos trabajamos y estudiamos a tiempo completo. Pero queremos hacerlo en algún momento, por supuesto.

MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

Austrian death metallers Altar of I released their new album "Human Resources" on March 3rd under Art Gates Records. Made in Metal talks with the singer Georg Axmann to find out everything about this album.

MiM: Tell me about the beginnings of the band. How did the idea of forming the band come about? What is the concept behind the name of the band?

AoI: First of all, thanks for the interview! Some guys formed a band in 2015, played a few shows and then went on hiatus. They all played in other bands as well. Then after about a year they decided to take it up again and reformed the band. I played in another band with their drummer (who then changed to play the guitar) and he asked me if I wanted to join them as a second vocalist, which I did. Ossian then joined the formation as the new drummer and we changed the band´s former name to Altar of I. Since then a lot of line-up changes happened, so it is me and Ossian who are the only original members, though we are not really, when we consider that there has been another lineup before. But from the beginning of Altar of I we were the ones who carried the torch throughout the whole way.

It was me who came up with the name and I did have an idea what the name stood for and it is still what is the core of the band. We deny to praise anyone else but us. We don´t praise gods, idols, celebrities, influencers, money, or anything. We don´t care too much about what other people say or think. We make up our own minds to find ourselves and our paths. Of course, we don´t live our lives in blind ignorance about other people´s feelings or needs, but seeing which direction society goes to we go inside and listen to our own voice and clarify what is right for us.

MiM: I would like to know if from the beginning you already have a clear idea of what the sound of the band was?

AoI: In the beginning, the band played Metalcore, with heavier influences and poppy choruses. When I joined the band I wanted to focus on the heavier side of it by adding growls, but at the same time, I liked the melodic and harmonic parts but wanted it to sound more mature and progressive (and less pop). Since then, even when our sound has changed a little bit over the years, we never knew if you could put us into one single genre. So, we decided to use Metal as a description and let others decide where they see us. When I became the only singer the sound became more Deathmetal-ish, yet we never lost the melodic and progressive parts. Some would say, we are Metalcore, we also heard the term Progressive Metalcore when they talked about us (which I personally like), others consider us Melodic Death,....in the end I think we are all of that plus some others.

MiM: "Human Resources" (Art Gates Records, 2023) has an amazing sound!! It takes us into an atmosphere that surrounds you and takes you through the songs on the album through a great story. How was the recording and production process? What recording studio did it take place in? Who was in charge of the musical production of the album?

AoI: Thanks, that is what we wanted to create: a dark and gloomy atmosphere. We recorded everything ourselves, we never hit up a studio. When we recorded our debut EP our former guitar player Phil recorded everything but he left the band right after we started working on the album. So, we – the rest of us - had to take over everything and learn to work with all the programs. A lot of it was recorded in my basement, where also our rehearsal room is. Due to Covid and the strict restrictions (not being able to meet), some parts were also recorded at everyone´s home. And yes, Covid was also a reason it took us so long. Next to it – as mentioned before – we had to replace a guitar player, search for a new space to rehearse,...To some extent, this time was perfect to record an album, as we had a lot of time and no live shows, but we could hardly meet and practice, there was a lot of waiting, learning, etc. But recording the album helped us as a band to get through this time, I guess. In one song I even sing about Covid but I won´t tell in which one.

MiM: Listening to the album I feel a connection between all the songs. Is "Human Resources" a concept album? What are the songs about, lyrically speaking?

AoI: Correct, it is a concept album that it is framed by this story of the Wendigo, which for us stands for fear, the abuse of power, greed, lies, corruption, all the bad side effects of society, capitalism, politics, religion,...´ Human Resources´ for us is a more than ambiguous title. The term is used in the economy and describes human beings as a resource, just like oil, wood, and others. So, for them, we are not more than a tool to use for work and their profit. As we can see everywhere, this is not a Dystopian vision, sadly it is reality and has been shaping our lives for a long time. The Wendigo also feeds from humans and grows with every human being that it eats. So, the fear of it makes it even grow bigger and stronger. In the end, we – because we are so afraid of being eaten alive - eat ourselves and each other. But, on the more positive side, humans are also the source of good things, for art, compassion, care, rebellion and I don´t want to sound too pathetic but also love in all its variations, which can also lead to a lot of good things.

MiM: Listening to the album I feel marked influences of Progressive Metal and sometimes Deathcore. What can you tell me about it?

AoI: I am a huge fan of progressive metal (especially Between The Buried And Me, Haken, old Opeth, Mastodon etc.) and I like to sing in different styles and with Altar of I I was able to bring those influences into the mix. But every member – former or current – has an affinity for progressive (or experimental) music, so it makes sense that we also allow those influences to come through in our music. Regarding Deathcore I wouldn´t say it influences us a lot. I do listen to some bands of that genre (especially the original ones), so it might have some light influences, but I am also listening to (brutal) Death metal (such as Aborted), so it might also be this. And we also listen to a lot of Tech Death bands, also those with progressive elements, so I guess all of that shines through in our music and sound. 

MiM: Normally Death Metal bands don't release records that long. This album will have 16 songs. That speaks of the good creative moment in which the band is. But don't you think they break a bit with the structure created by the genre with respect to releasing albums with few songs?

AoI: Normally, no bands release records that long. And there are still songs we´ve never recorded, so we are sitting on some material that hasn´t been used yet because it didn´t fit the rest of the material. We know it is not common to release such an album, but again, we don´t care a lot about conformity and we liked all songs, so why hold them back? We are starting to work on the next projects soon and we already have a lot of ideas. But the next album will not be that enormous. We will rather focus on the main ideas so that it will be more compressed.

But it´s not that it has 16 songs on it that all sound similar. There are some rather calm and atmospheric moments, where you can take a little break in between and they also help to create that overall sound that we achieved.

MiM: Who is the guest singer on the song "Beauty Beast"?

AoI: Her name is Anja Sattler and she sings in a band where our drummer Ossian also plays the drums. We knew we wanted to have at least a guest singer on this album and the song ”Beauty Beast” just was the ideal song to include a female voice. So we tried her out and her vocals were perfect for it. We are very happy about the outcome.

MiM: The exquisite orchestral work on songs like "Arkanus" catches my attention. How did the idea of using orchestral arrangements on this album come about?

AoI: For all the orchestrations we work with a friend, Bernd Münzer (he also played in a band with me and our original guitar player). He also helped us out before and he is a genius when it comes to things like that. So, in the end he did all the keys, samples, orchestrations, and whatnot on the album. He became sort of the sixth member of the band already. Usually, Ossian writes something on the computer, we send it to Bernd, tell him what we think it should sound like, what atmosphere the song should have and the rest is just his great work. When we think Ossian´s ideas sound good, we know Bernd is going to do something great and we are always looking forward to his input. It is safe to say that we will continue to work with him in the future.

MiM: The name of the first track on the album is "Wiindigookaanzhimowin". What does it mean?

AoI: When I knew that the Wendigo will be the cover I did some research and I also came across this, which is sort of a ceremonial dance to ward off the Wendigo. I tried to bring up that theme of Wendigo and Native American culture every here and there. The last song for instance is about a man known as Geronimo (Goyaałé in Cherokee language) who fought against the Spanish invaders. The title of one instrumental song is also a reference to them, then there of course is the song ”Wendigod” and so on.

MiM: How is the creative process of the composition of the music, is it a collective process, or only one or maybe two are the ones that compose in the band?

AoI: In the beginning, we had four songwriters, including Ossian, who still writes most of the music. But the rest gets more and more involved and at every stage of the band everyone could contribute, change structures, come up with ideas, etc. We are a very democratic band and in the end, everybody should be happy about the result. We should have fun playing our own music. Marvin has been adding more and more ideas and Alex – being the latest addition to the band – also added one song to the album (“Ex Umbra In Solem”), which we wanted so that there is also something of his ideas on it. Still, in the end, we all contributed more than just our instruments. Sometimes one writes a song with a certain idea or intention and in the end, it sounds completely different because of everyone´s personal influence. On the next album, we want to approach everything differently. We want everybody to be involved in every single step, not only in the music but also in the lyrics etc.

It is also the first time that we have had a stable line-up for some years now, so we can start from zero and make our music, without any relics from former members. But of course, we are still our main influence, we always look back on what we have done before we look forward.   

MiM: Excellent album cover design. Who was in charge of the design? What is the concept behind the cover design?

AoI: This artwork was conceptualized by our drummer with his sister Alix Gratzer and we worked with several artists, especially Christina Hartenberger, who did a lot of the design. She had done work for us before and she also acts in some of our videos, therefore she – next to Alix – is another important support for the band.

We tried to make a unique design that represents the main topics of the album and the songs. We also used the structures which also appear in our music videos. The concept behind the cover was a portrait of feeding the innocent from the breast of the corrupted.

MiM:  You are a band with several years of work records and many concerts in your career. Looking back, how would you rate the work of the band all these years?

AoI: Sometimes I think we haven´t done a lot in the past seven years since our formation. But then again we have to be careful who we compare ourselves with. We do everything as a hobby and things take longer when everyone is fully working and we only have little free time. Considering that we did do a lot. We are very productive when it comes down to writing songs and we just like creating ideas for videos etc. And because we do a lot ourselves, it on the one hand sometimes takes some time to produce something, but on the other hand, we don´t have to spend too much money. We recorded an EP, had some videos to it. Then we did a single, then another, and then another. And it did take some years to finish the album but in the end, we recorded sixteen songs and already produced several videos. And there is more coming in the near future. We are not done with the album yet. And now, after a long break from live shows, we start playing and new gigs come up every once in awhile. We love to write new songs, record them, and make videos but we also love playing live. I think we did all of that well in the past, we like almost every song we wrote in the past, so there´s nothing to regret.

MiM: What plans do they have to promote this Album? 

AoI:  Plans are: to play live as much as possible, and sell some CDs and merch. Make ourselves and people who appreciate what we are doing happy.

There are going to be some more shows and we are still planning. No tour so far, this is difficult to plan as we all work and study full time. But we want to do it some time of course.

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?

AoI: Be kind, be smart, Metal is a good thing, share it with others!
