"Cuando Gianba hace su voz, eleva las canciones a un nivel superior"
The Unity, la banda alemana de Power Metal fundada por Michael Ehré y Henjo Richter, miembros de Gamma Ray, ha anunciado su nuevo álbum 'The Hellish Joyride' en el prestigioso sello discográfico Steamhammer/SPV, que verá la luz el 25 de agosto. Made in Metal habla con Michael Ehré para saber todo sobre este álbum y los próximos movimientos de la banda.
MiM: “The Hellish Joyride” (SteamHammer/SPV, 2023) ¡es un álbum excelente! Fuerza, velocidad, melodías y potencia son las características de este disco. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto?
Michael Ehré: ¡Hola Raúl! ¡Gracias por tus amables palabras! Me alegra saber que te gusta nuestro nuevo álbum. Es el cuarto álbum de estudio de The Unity y el quinto en total, ya que lanzamos un álbum en vivo llamado "The Devil You Know - Live" en 2021. Las grabaciones y la producción fueron tranquilas, ya que todos somos músicos con mucha experiencia y sabemos cómo queremos que suene The Unity. Por supuesto que fue estresante porque no importa cuánto tiempo tengamos, al final nunca es suficiente (risas). Estuve a cargo de la producción mientras Achim Köhler mezclaba y masterizaba el álbum. Hizo un trabajo fantástico, estamos muy contentos con el resultado.
MiM: El álbum estará listo justo a tiempo para que la banda se vaya de gira con Primal Fear en septiembre. ¿Cuéntame sobre eso?
Michael Ehré: Teníamos la oferta de salir de gira con Primal Fear y queríamos que nuestro nuevo álbum saliera en ese momento. Tenemos muchas ganas de esta gira ya que ambas bandas son amigas y será una gran fiesta para los fans y ambas bandas. Tengo el privilegio de tocar dos shows cada noche ya que también soy el baterista de Primal Fear. Será todo un desafío, pero estoy preparado y no veo la hora de que comience la gira.
MiM: "The Hellish Joyride" es un disco en el que siento una marcada influencia del Metal Neoclásico en temas como "Saints and Sinners". ¿Es tan? ¿Cual es tu opinión acerca de esto?
Michael Ehré: ¡Absolutamente! “Saints and Sinners” es la primera canción de speed metal real de The Unity. Es una canción desafiante para todos en la banda, ¡pero pura diversión de tocar! Henjo, Eggi y yo hemos tocado y compuesto canciones rápidas en nuestras antiguas bandas Gamma Ray y Edguy, así que no es nada realmente nuevo para nosotros. Pero para The Unity lo es y nos gusta!!! La canción será nuestro segundo sencillo y video que se lanzará el 18 de agosto, exactamente una semana antes de que salga "The Hellish Joyride". Estoy bastante seguro de que a todos los fanáticos del metal les gustará esa pista.
MiM: ¿Crees que la inclusión de Tobias Exxel en la banda ha aportado frescura y fuerza a la banda y en especial a este disco?
Michael Ehré: ¡Definitivamente! Con Eggi ahora tenemos seis compositores en la banda. Una situación muy chula y de lujo. Su forma de tocar el bajo encaja perfectamente con nuestra música y definitivamente aportó frescura y fuerza. También es de gran ayuda cuando se trata del lado comercial de la banda. Estamos muy contentos de tenerlo a bordo.
MiM: ¡"Stay The Fool" es una canción con una fuerza increíble! Gianbattista Manenti está en excelentes condiciones. Puro buen Hard Rock. ¿Que me puedes decir?
Michael Ehré: Genial que menciones esta canción porque la música fue escrita por Eggi, mientras que Stef escribió la letra. Obviamente, una colaboración genial (risas). Gianba es una gran cantante. Uno de los mejores en el negocio en mi opinión. Destaca su actuación en “The Hellish Joyride”. Supongo que estamos escribiendo buena música, pero cuando Gianba hace su voz, eleva las canciones a un nivel superior. Además de eso, es un ser humano realmente bueno y un verdadero amigo para todos nosotros. Suena demasiado bueno para ser verdad, pero es exactamente así.
MiM: Escuchando el álbum siento una conexión entre todas las canciones. ¿"The Hellish Joyride" es un álbum conceptual?
Michael Ehré: No, no lo es. Cada pista se destaca por sí misma.
MiM: Si tuvieras que juzgar críticamente la trayectoria de la banda, ¿qué les dirías a nuestros lectores?
Michael Ehré: The Unity representa poder y energía, pero también diversidad y buenas melodías. Esta combinación crea la música y el sonido de nuestra banda. Esto es algo que sucede naturalmente ya que somos seis compositores diferentes con seis antecedentes musicales ligeramente diferentes. Lo bueno es que a todos nos gusta lo que está componiendo el otro y esta es probablemente la principal razón por la que nuestros discos tienen esta gran diversidad. Además de eso, nos encanta estar en el escenario y eso se refleja en la gente de la audiencia. ¡Los espectáculos de Unity son siempre pura diversión!
MiM: Una vez que el disco esté disponible para todos los fans de la banda, ¿qué planes tenéis para promocionarlo?
Michael Ehré: Ya lanzamos nuestro primer sencillo y video “Always Two Ways to Play” hace un par de semanas. Sin revelar demasiado, este video es realmente especial y recomiendo a todos que lo vean. El 18 de agosto seguirá nuestro segundo sencillo y video “Saints and Sinners”. Una semana después del lanzamiento del álbum estaremos de gira con Primal Fear en septiembre. También estamos trabajando en más espectáculos y festivales para promocionar el álbum.
MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

The Unity, the German Power Metal band founded by Gamma Ray members Michael Ehré and Henjo Richter have announced their new album 'The Hellish Joyride' on the prestigious Steamhammer/SPV record label, which will be released on August 25th. Made in Metal talks to Michael Ehré to find out everything about this album and the band's next moves.
MiM: “The Hellish Joyride” ( SteamHammer/SPV, 2023) is an excellent album! Strength, speed, melodies and power are the characteristics of this record. What can you tell me about it?
Michael Ehré: Hi Raul! Thank you for your nice words! I´m glad to hear that you like our new album. It is the fourth The Unity-studio album and the fifth in total as we released a live album called “The Devil You Know – Live” in 2021. The recordings and the production went quite smoothly as we are all very experienced musicians and we know how we want The Unity to sound. Of course, it was stressy because no matter how much time we have it´s never enough at the end, (laughs). I was in charge of the production while Achim Köhler mixed and mastered the album. He did a fantastic job – we are very happy with result.
MiM: The album will be ready just in time for the band to go on tour with Primal Fear in September. Tell me about it?
Michael Ehré: We had the offer to go on tour with Primal Fear and we wanted our new album to be out at that point. We´re really looking forward to this tour as both bands are friends and it will be a big party for the fans and both bands. I have the privilege of playing two shows each night as I´m also the drummer for Primal Fear. This will be quite a challenge but I´m prepared and can´t wait the tour to start.
MiM: "The Hellish Joyride" is an album in which I feel a marked influence of Neoclassical Metal in songs like "Saints and Sinners". Is it so? What is your opinion about it?
Michael Ehré: Absolutely! “Saints and Sinners” is The Unity´s very first real-speed metal song. It´s a challenging song for everyone in the band but pure fun to play! Henjo, I and Eggi have played and composed speed songs in our former bands Gamma Ray and Edguy, so it´s nothing really new to us. But for The Unity it is and we like it!!! The track will be our second single and video that will be released on August, 18th, exactly one week before “The Hellish Joyride” comes out. I´m pretty sure every metal fan will like that track.
MiM: Do you think that the inclusion of Tobias Exxel in the band has brought freshness and strength to the band and especially to this album?
Michael Ehré: Definitely! With Eggi now we have six songwriters in the band. A very cool and luxurious situation. His way of playing the bass fits perfectly with our music and definitely brought freshness and strength. He is also a big help when it comes to the business side of the band. We are really happy to have him onboard.
MiM: "Stay The Fool" is a song with incredible strength!! Gianbattista Manenti is in excellent condition. Pure good Hard Rock!! What can you tell me?
Michael Ehré: Cool that you mention this song as the music was written by Eggi, while Stef wrote the lyrics. A very cool collaboration obviously, (laughs). Gianba is a hell of a singer. One of the best in the business in my opinion. His performance is outstanding on “The Hellish Joyride”. I guess we´re writing good music but when Gianba is doing his vocals he lifts the songs to a higher level. Besides that, he is a really fine human being and a true friend to all of us. Sounds too good to be true – but it´s exactly like that.
MiM: Listening to the album I feel a connection between all the songs. "The Hellish Joyride" is a concept album?
Michael Ehré: No, it´s not. Each track stands for its own.
MiM: If you were to critically judge the trajectory of the band, what would you say to our readers?
Michael Ehré: The Unity stands for power and energy but also for diversity and good melodies. This combination creates the music and the sound of our band. This is something that happens naturally as we are six different songwriters with six slightly different musical backgrounds. The good thing is that we all like what the other is composing and this is probably the main reason why our albums have this great diversity. Besides that, we love to be on stage and that reflects to the people in the audience. The Unity-shows are always pure fun!
MiM: Once the album is available to all the fans of the band, what plans do you have to promote it?
Michael Ehré: We already released our first single and video “Always Two Ways to Play” a couple of weeks ago. Without revealing too much this video is really special and I recommend everybody to watch it. On August, 18th our second single and video “Saints and Sinners” will follow. One week after the release of the album we will be on tour with Primal Fear in September. We´re also working on more shows and festivals to promote the album.
