En su cuarto álbum, 'Sonic Moons', que saldrá el 8 de septiembre con Magnetic Eye Records, Domkraft de Suecia, emprendió un viaje hacia el cosmos interior, montando su riff-doom psicodélico impulsado por fuzz a través de la psique galáctica y hacia realidades metafísicas alternativas, todo en busca de escape, respiro, y liberación. MiM: ¿Qué puedes decirme sobre este álbum? ¿Cuál es el mensaje líricamente hablando?
MW: Desde el principio tuvimos una visión clara para este álbum. Queríamos que fuera más amplio, con un techo más alto que permitiera que las canciones respiraran y encontraran momentos de tranquilidad en medio de la intensidad. MiM: “Slowburner" es una de mis canciones favoritas. Los riffs pesados son constantes, me recordó a Tony Iommi de Black Sabbath. ¿Qué me puedes decir sobre este tema?
MW: Tony Iommi ha tenido un tremendo impacto en mí como guitarrista. Cuando empezamos a aprender a tocar, todos escuchábamos Sabbath religiosamente, y ahora parece que fue hace toda una vida. Su sonido es como una fuerza poderosa que define el género. Lo que realmente me sorprende es su capacidad para tocar melodías y solos con tanta precisión que es realmente inspirador. Tiene un talento increíble para hacer que la guitarra suene tan impactante con efectos mínimos. Hay pureza en su forma de tocar. Es realmente emocionante escuchar que puedes sentir esas influencias de Sabbath cuando escuchas nuestro tema, “Slowburner”. MiM: “Sonic Moons” es un disco de Doom Rock pero con una marcada influencia de Stoner Rock y Garage Rock. ¿Es así? ¿Cómo lo ves?
MW: Siempre es difícil describir las influencias detrás de nuestra música. Por supuesto, tenemos mucho Stoner y garage en nuestras colecciones de discos. Los tres crecimos con el metal y el punk como base, pero en realidad hemos escuchado mucho rock alternativo, krautrock y muchos otros géneros también. El género Stoner es un género amplio, y en parte nos encontramos en medio de él, pero también fuera de él en muchos sentidos. El sonido de garaje está naturalmente presente porque trabajamos con un sonido Doom bastante poco convencional con demasiado ruido, retroalimentación y traqueteo. Es difícil decir exactamente de dónde viene. Simplemente sucede cuando jugamos.
MiM: Cuando se trata de componer material nuevo, ¿cuáles son tus influencias más directas? ¿Podríamos definir su sonido o por el contrario es un músico inquieto al que le gusta innovar y abrir nuevas propuestas?
MW: A menudo nos inspiramos en las bandas con las que tocamos. Hace un tiempo, tuvimos el placer de realizar una breve gira por Finlandia con la banda de punk/metal con sede en Estocolmo Haystack. Fue fantástico. On their fourth album, 'Sonic Moons', released next September 6th via Magnetic Eye Records, Sweden's Domkraft set forth on a voyage into the inner cosmos, riding their fuzz-driven, psychedelic riff-doom through the galactic psyche and into alternate metaphysical realities, all in search of escape, respite, and release. Domkraft generally stays true to their musical course on the new effort, but the Nordic trio has audibly matured and sharpened their writing as well. His guitar player, Martin Widholm, joins Raúl Cardona to talk about the music and the band.
MiM: What can you tell me about this album? What is the message lyrically speaking?
MW: From the very beginning, we had a clear vision for this album. We wanted it to be more expansive, with a higher ceiling that would allow the songs to breathe and find moments of tranquillity amidst the intensity. We made sure to give lots of space for melodies on both the guitar and vocals, and we're satisfied with how that has turned out so far. Thematically, our previous record explored a post-apocalyptic world in the process of rebirth. But this time, our focus has shifted towards a sort of futuristic space environment. There is both darkness and light in there. The songs on this album offer various suggestions on that theme.
MiM: “Slowburner" is one of my favorite songs. Heavy riffs are constant, it reminded me of Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath. What can you tell me about this topic?
MW: Tony Iommi has had a tremendous impact on me as a guitarist. When we first started learning to play, we would all listen to Sabbath religiously, and it feels like a lifetime ago now. His sound is like a powerful force that defines the genre. What really amazes me is his ability to play melodies and solos with such precision, it's truly inspiring. He has this incredible talent for making the guitar sound so impactful with minimal effects. There's purity in his playing. It's really exciting to hear that you can sense those Sabbath influences when you listen to our track, “Slowburner”. We wanted to create a short track with a strong rhythmic drive that captures the essence of that early era in rock music.
MiM: “Sonic Moons" is a Doom Rock album but with a marked influence of Stoner Rock and Garage Rock. Is it so? How do you see it?
MW: It is always difficult to describe the influences behind our music. Of course, we have plenty of Stoner and Garage in our record collections. All three of us grew up with metal and punk as our foundation, but we have actually listened to a lot of alternative rock, Krautrock, and many other genres as well. The Stoner genre is a broad genre, and we partially find ourselves in the midst of it but also somewhat outside of it in many ways. The garage sound is naturally present because we work with a rather unconventional doom sound with a bit too much noise, feedback, and rattle. It's hard to say exactly where it comes from. It just happens when we play.
MiM: When it comes to composing new material, what are your most direct influences? Could we define his sound or, on the contrary, is he a restless musician who likes to innovate and open new proposals?
MW: We are often inspired by the bands we play with. A while ago, we had the pleasure of going on a short tour in Finland with the Stockholm-based punk/metal band Haystack. It was fantastic. Recently, we also had the opportunity to play with our friends Slomatics from Ireland, and we are excited to share the stage with them again soon. That's where the energy comes from! In fact, minimalist music is a significant source of inspiration for us. It can vary from slow and nihilistic Doom to Noise rock with samplers and no guitars. The rhythm is always at the core; once we've nailed down the beat, everything else falls into place.
MiM: Tour project or concerts in the coming months?
MW: We just finished a four-day trip to the UK where we performed at the ArcTanGent festival, among others. We will be playing in Oslo in a few weeks, with some additional dates in Sweden. We have a special show in Copenhagen with Slomatics and Conan in October that will be amazing, as well as Deep Sound Festival in Germany with related dates later on. It's going to be an exciting autumn!
