Monastery es un grupo húngaro de Death Metal fundado en Zalaegerszeg en 1989. Se les atribuye el primer álbum de death metal húngaro lanzado oficialmente, "Far from Christ". Luego de publicar cinco álbumes, la banda permaneció en espera durante varios años y regresó en 2021 más fuerte y renovada, lanzando su EP “Chimera” y un siguiente álbum titulado “Divine Damnation”, junto con varios videos. Monasterio está más que preparado para sorprendernos con este nuevo álbum titulado “From Blood”, el cual fue lanzado el pasado 22 de septiembre bajo el sello Art Gates Records. Excelente oportunidad para que Made in Metal converse con su batería Róbert "Billy" Kóvacs.

MiM: “From Blood” (Art Gates Records, 2023) es un disco con un sonido pesado y riffs de guitarra cortantes y rápidos. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción? ¿Quién fue el responsable de la producción?

M: ¡Hola! ¡Damos la bienvenida a todos! Escribimos las canciones en aproximadamente medio año y casi todos los miembros del equipo participaron en cada canción. ¡Es un verdadero esfuerzo de equipo! Preferiríamos no poner canciones de relleno en el álbum, así que, en lugar de eso, ¡aquellas con las que todos en la banda estaban contentos se incluyeron en el álbum! Las grabaciones se realizaron en un estudio húngaro (estudio Denevér), que es un estudio nacional reconocido y con buenos profesionales. Allí también se realizaron las grabaciones, mezclas y masterizaciones. El ingeniero de sonido fue Zoltán Cserfalvi, ¡pero nos involucramos en el proceso tanto como pudimos!

MiM: Roland Kovács tiene una de las voces más cavernosas y oscuras de la escena del metal internacional, lo que crea un sello único en la banda. ¿Cómo lo ves?

M: Nos complace que diga eso; ¡es bueno escuchar eso! Roland es un joven vocalista; Se unió a la banda de repente. Después de algunos conciertos, inmediatamente fuimos al estudio con él y grabamos el álbum del año pasado, “Divine Damnation”. Su actuación ya era buena allí, pero desde entonces ¡ha mejorado mucho! ¡También le encanta el death metal de la vieja escuela! ¡Su otro punto fuerte es que conecta con el público en los conciertos!

MiM: ¿Cómo es la escena del Death Metal en Hungría? ¿Qué bandas húngaras me recomendarías escuchar?

M: Se está volviendo más fuerte; lo sentimos cada vez más fuerte. Digamos que los jóvenes prefieren la línea deathcore más moderna, pero el death metal tradicional también se está desarrollando. ¡Muchas bandas que estuvieron activas hace 20 o 25 años están resurgiendo con nuevos álbumes y conciertos! En casa, ¡quizás el grupo Mors Silens sea el que recomendaría escuchar! 

M: Los gráficos de la portada fueron realizados por un artista húngaro, Boglárka Waldmann. El concepto era mostrar el sufrimiento humano, el dolor experimentado de forma natural, en sentido figurado. ¡Y la combinación de colores se adaptó al título del álbum!

MiM: “From Blood” es un álbum que veo más cercano al Blackened Death Metal. ¿Qué podrías decirme al respecto?

M: Las bandas europeas de black metal más modernas (Belphegor, Behemoth) se están fortaleciendo y tienen una gran influencia en nosotros musicalmente. Me gusta ese tipo de mundo melódico, así como las estructuras de las canciones. Quizás es por eso que tal efecto se siente en el disco. ¡No era consciente de todos modos!

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?

M: Queremos hacer innumerables conciertos aquí, en Europa o incluso en todo el mundo. Nos gustaría apoyar una gran gira europea con una banda conocida en 2024, pero afortunadamente también tenemos muchos conciertos. A finales de este verano, tuvimos la suerte de participar en la minigira I Am Morbid con la ayuda de Art Gates Records, ¡y salió muy bien!

MiM: Finalmente, quería que te sintieras libre de compartir algunas palabras con tus fans y nuestros lectores.

M: ¡Espero que quien escuche el álbum “From Blood” entienda lo que queremos representar! Lo que queremos presentar es un death metal desgarrador, ¡y nuestro objetivo importante es llegar a tantos lugares como sea posible y que la mayor cantidad de personas conozcan nuestra música en vivo! ¡Estamos realmente agradecidos con Art Gates Records por su ayuda y apoyo hasta ahora! Monastery is a Hungarian Death Metal group founded in Zalaegerszeg in 1989. They are credited with the first officially released Hungarian death metal album, “Far from Christ”. After five albums were published, the band remained on standby for several years and returned in 2021 stronger and renewed, releasing their EP “Chimera” and a following album titled “Divine Damnation,” along with several videos. Monastery is more than prepared to surprise us with this new album titled “From Blood”, which was released on September 22 under the Art Gates Records label. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk with his drummer, Róbert "Billy" Kóvacs.

MiM: “From Blood” (Art Gates Records, 2023) is an album with a heavy sound and cutting and fast guitar riffs. What was the recording and production process like? Who was responsible for the production?

M: Hello! We welcome everyone! We wrote the songs in about half a year, and almost all the members of the team participated in every song. It's a real team effort! We would rather not put filler songs on the album, so instead, the ones that everyone in the band was happy with were included on the album! The recordings were made in a Hungarian studio (Denevér studio), which is a recognized domestic studio with good professionals! The recordings, mixing, and mastering were also done there. The sound engineer was Zoltán Cserfalvi, but we got involved in the process as much as possible!

MiM: Roland Kovács has one of the most cavernous and dark voices on the international metal scene, which creates a unique stamp on the band. How do you see it?

M: We are pleased that you say that; it's good to hear that! Roland is a young vocalist; he joined the band quite suddenly. After a few concerts, we immediately went into the studio with him and recorded last year's album, “Divine Damnation”. His performance was already strong there, but since then, he has improved a lot! He also loves old-school death metal! His other strength is that he connects with the audience at concerts!

MiM: How is the Death Metal scene in Hungary? What Hungarian bands would you recommend I listen to?

M: It is getting stronger; we feel it getting stronger. Let's say the young people prefer the more modern deathcore line, but traditional death metal is also developing. Many bands that were active 20–25 years ago are re-emerging with new albums and concerts! At home, perhaps the Mors Silens band is the one I could recommend listening to!

MiM: Who was responsible for the cover design? What is the concept behind the design itself?

M: The cover graphics were made by a Hungarian artist, Boglárka Waldmann. The concept was to show human suffering, the pain experienced naturally, in a figurative sense. And the color scheme was adapted to the title of the album!

MiM: “From Blood” is an album that I see as closer to Blackened Death Metal. What could you tell me about it?

M: The more modern European black metal bands (Belphegor, Behemoth) are getting stronger and have a great influence on us musically. I like that kind of melodic world, as well as the song structures. Perhaps that is why such an effect is felt on the record. It wasn't conscious anyway!

M: We want to do countless concerts here, in Europe, or even around the world. We would like to support a major European tour with a well-known band in 2024, but fortunately, we also have plenty of concerts. At the end of this summer, we were lucky enough to participate in the I Am Morbid mini-tour with the help of Art Gates Records, which went very well!

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.

M: I hope that whoever listens to the “From Blood” album will understand what we want to represent! Face-ripping death metal is what we want to present, and our important goal is to get to as many places as possible and for as many people to meet our music live!
