Han pasado cuatro años desde que la banda de Thrash Metal de Los Angeles, EvilDead lanzó su álbum de regreso 'United States Of Anarchy', para deleite de sus fans y medios. Cuatro años en los que el mundo ha cambiado de muchas maneras, mientras que EvilDead, sólido como una roca, ha conservado sus puntos fuertes típicos mientras desarrollaba su estilo dinámico de una manera controlada pero específica. Su nuevo álbum 'Toxic Grace' se lanzará el 24 de mayo a través de Steamhammer/SPV. Made In Metal habla con Juan García para saber todo sobre este nuevo lanzamiento.

MiM: Hola, mi nombre es Raúl Cardona y es un privilegio hablar contigo.

Juan García: Gracias. Sí, estamos muy emocionados de lanzar nuestro nuevo álbum de larga duración este mes de mayo. No podemos esperar hasta que nuestros fans y la comunidad del metal en general tengan la oportunidad de escuchar el nuevo álbum de EvilDead: “Toxic Grace”

MiM: “Toxic Grace” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2024) es un disco en el que mantienen la crudeza y velocidad que caracteriza el sonido de los 80. ¿Cuál fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical del álbum? ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar? ¿Quién supervisó la producción musical?

Juan García: Originalmente, empezamos a grabar solo 4 canciones, queríamos lanzar un EP, así que grabamos el primer lote de canciones con el productor Rob Hill aquí en Los Ángeles. Esas canciones fueron “Stupid On Parade”, “Bathe In Fire”, “Subjugated Souls” y una versión de Killing Joke de la canción “The Death and Resurrection Show”. Enviamos las versiones preliminares a nuestro sello discográfico y dijeron; '¡Esto suena genial! ¿Por qué no grabas un álbum de larga duración? Así que volvimos a escribir y grabar el resto de las canciones para completar el álbum. En algún momento del proceso, tomamos un breve descanso y fuimos a Europa para nuestra gira el año pasado en 2023. Cuando regresamos; Terminamos la grabación con Dave Casey como ingeniero y productor del resto del nuevo álbum. MiM: Excelente diseño de portada. ¿Te importaría contarme sobre ello? ¿Cuál sería el concepto detrás del diseño de la portada?

Juan García: La portada fue diseñada por Dan Goldsworthy, y la idea del concepto original vino de nuestro vocalista Phil Flores y, por supuesto, Dan Goldsworthy incluyó algunas de sus ideas en la obra de arte y yo también contribuí con algunas cosas. El concepto básico de la portada trata sobre cómo los medios a veces nos brindan noticias desastrosas y cómo, de alguna manera, pueden percibirse como una forma de control. MiM: ¿Cuál es el secreto para mantenerse vivo durante tantos años en el complicado mundo de la industria discográfica?

Juan García: Realmente no hay ningún secreto, hay que estar motivado, encontrar motivación y empuje, y creo que lo más importante es divertirse. Estoy agradecido de poder crear música y hacer giras, y sin duda es un honor conocer a los fans del metal.

MiM: Es muy notable lo bueno que es Phil Flores como vocalista, sugiere fuertemente que se encuentra en excelentes condiciones. ¿Cómo logra mantener esa crudeza y fuerza en tu voz?

Juan García: Phil trabajó muy duro en este nuevo álbum; ¡Escribió como el 95 % de todas las letras de este disco! Se tomó su tiempo con la grabación y fue crítico con su interpretación vocal. Creo que sabía específicamente cómo quería sonar en las nuevas canciones. Es un veterano de la temporada.

MiM: EvilDead es una de las pocas bandas que siempre ha mantenido un sonido áspero, rápido y agresivo. Me gustaría saber si desde el principio tuviste claro el sonido que tendría la banda.

Juan García: Inicialmente, solo queríamos crear canciones que fueran más pesadas que nuestras bandas anteriores, yo acababa de separarme de Agent Steel y Abattoir, así que la idea era escribir algo más pesado. Y para EvilDead en ese momento era importante disfrutar y divertirse con los shows en vivo, sin egos ni actitudes. Nuestro álbum debut, “Annihilation of Civilization”, es un álbum debut sólido y muy original, con muchas contribuciones geniales de todos los miembros de la banda en ese momento. Supongo que algo de experiencia también jugó un papel en las grabaciones, ya que teníamos raíces que se remontaban a Agent Steel y Abattoir.

MiM: EvilDead tiene un historial de inestabilidad en sus filas en los primeros años de su carrera. ¿Crees que ahora con esta formación habéis conseguido la estabilidad que necesitáis como banda?

Juan García: La alineación actual es sólida; Tenemos la misma formación de nuestro último álbum “United States of Anarchy” (2020) en este nuevo álbum, “Toxic Grace”. Nos llevamos bien y esperamos continuar creando metal espectacular.

MiM: El álbum “Annihilation of Civilization” (1989) celebra este año su 35º aniversario de su lanzamiento al mercado. ¿Habrá un ¿Versión remasterizada o de lujo para celebrar?

Juan García: Esperamos que se reedite en un futuro próximo; con suerte, hacia finales de este año, la remasterización es sin duda una gran idea. Hemos tenido conversaciones al respecto con nuestro sello discográfico.

MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo de componer música, es un proceso colectivo o solo hay uno o quizás dos que componen en la banda?

Juan García: Comienza con un riff de guitarra, y Albert Gonzales (guitarrista) tiene un arsenal de riffs archivados; él nos presentará sus ideas. A partir de ahí, agregaré ideas de guitarra, o no, dependiendo de si necesita capas adicionales o riffs adicionales. Luego nuestro baterista y yo nos reunimos con Albert y arreglamos las partes para que fluyan y tengan sentido antes de presentárselas a nuestro vocalista Phil Flores. También dejamos mucho espacio para que nuestro bajista Carlos agregue sus líneas de bajo o partes adicionales. Luego de todo eso, todavía podemos reorganizar los versos o estribillos, agregar solos de guitarra, acortar o alargar la canción. Es mucho trabajo, pero es inspirador. Eventualmente, iremos a un estudio de grabación y demostraremos las ideas antes de finalmente grabarlas para su lanzamiento. En ocasiones, puede ser un proceso más colectivo, dependiendo de la canción y la situación. También puede pasar cuando estamos ensayando canciones antiguas, a veces se te ocurre una buena idea y la grabamos y trabajamos en ella más adelante.

MiM: Eres parte de la alineación de Body Count. ¿Qué tan difícil es organizar tiempos para poder dedicarle tiempo a EvilDead?

Juan García: No es tan difícil, ten en cuenta: el vocalista de Body Count, Ice-T, también es actor, por lo que a veces tal vez esté filmando para televisión o una película. Entonces, cuando está ocupado haciendo eso, me tomo el tiempo para trabajar en EvilDead tanto como sea posible, también trabajo en Body Count tanto como sea posible. Es cuestión de hacer malabarismos con los horarios, eso es todo. Trato a ambas bandas de manera equitativa y justa, la música es mi pasión.

MiM: Con este sonido áspero, la banda marca una diferencia sonora respecto al sonido habitual de las bandas actuales de Thrash Metal. ¿Cuéntame sobre eso?

Juan García: Simplemente, tratamos de ser lo más originales posible y crear canciones que nos gusten, y si nuestros fans y otras personas disfrutan de nuestra música, entonces es una ventaja. Intentamos constantemente sonar lo mejor que podemos; pero también somos muy conscientes de que somos una banda underground de thrash metal. Sónicamente, intentamos apegarnos a nuestras raíces del metal.

MiM: Siento en este álbum una gran influencia del sonido y cadencia de bandas como Slayer al tocar. ¿Cuál es su criterio al respecto? ¿Cuáles son vuestras principales influencias a la hora de componer nuevo material?

Juan García: Crear música que disfrutemos escuchando. Intentamos generar ideas originales y pasajes musicales creativos y pesados, sin limitaciones, ¿a dónde nos lleve? No lo sabemos hasta que sentimos que la canción está terminada. Y si no nos gusta lo que creamos, simplemente dejamos de lado la idea y empezamos de nuevo. Creo que esta banda se influencia mutuamente individualmente y nos presionamos mutuamente para componer lo mejor que podamos.

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas para este año?

Juan García: Actualmente, tenemos programado un show el 16 de agosto con Whiplash en Los Ángeles, también actuaremos en el California Death Fest con Sodom a finales de este año. Estamos planeando filmar un nuevo video musical en los próximos meses después de que regrese de Europa en junio con Body Count. Esperamos reservar más espectáculos en Estados Unidos para 2024 y regresar a Europa en 2025 para una gira y algunos festivales.

MiM: Finalmente, quería que te sintieras libre de compartir algunas palabras con tus fans y nuestros lectores.

It has been four years since Los Angeles thrash metal band, EvilDead released their comeback album 'United States Of Anarchy', to the delight of their fans and media. Four years in which the world has changed in many ways, while rock-solid Evildead has retained its typical strengths while developing its dynamic style in a controlled but targeted way. Their new album 'Toxic Grace' will be released on May 24 via Steamhammer/SPV record label. Made in Metal talks to Juan García to find out everything about this new release.

MiM: Hello, my name is Raúl Cardona, and it is a privilege to talk to you.

Juan Garcia: Thank you. Yes, we are very excited that we are releasing our new full-length album this month in May. We can’t wait until our fans and the metal community in general gets the opportunity to listen to the new Evildead -‘Toxic Grace’ album.

MiM: “Toxic Grace” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2024) is an album in which they maintain the rawness and speed that characterizes the sound of the 80s. What was the recording and musical production process for the album? What recording studio did it take place in? Who oversaw the musical production?

Juan Garcia: Originally we went into recording 4-songs only, we wanted to release an EP so we recorded the first batch of songs with Producer Rob Hill here in Los Angeles. Those songs were “Stupid On Parade” “Bathe In Fire” “Subjugated Souls” and a Killing Joke cover of the track “The Death and Resurrection Show.” We sent the rough versions to our record label, and they said; ‘this sounds great! Why don’t you record a full-length album instead?’ So we went back to writing, and recording the rest of the songs to complete the album. At some point in the process, we took a short break, and went to Europe for our tour last year in 2023. When we returned; we finished the recording with Dave Casey engineering and producing the rest of the new album. This new album has two different producers; we also had Bill Metoyer involved as an engineer on a few songs, and had it mastered by Dave Roman at 4130 Mastering in New York.

MiM: Excellent cover design. Would you mind telling me about it? What would be the concept behind the cover design?

Juan Garcia: The cover artwork was designed by Dan Goldsworthy, and the original concept idea came from our vocalist Phil Flores, and of course, Dan Goldsworthy included some of his ideas to the artwork, and I contributed a few things as well. The basic cover concept is about how the media feeds us dooming news at times, and how in some ways it can be perceived as a form of control. There’s the possibility that news feeds can manipulate a person; an overconsumption can’t be good? Again, it’s art, and we like to leave it up to interpretation really. Nothing is to be taken too serious at this point.

MiM: What is the secret to staying alive for so many years in the very complicated world of the record music industry?

Juan Garcia: There’s really no secret, you have to be motivated, find motivation, and drive, and I think the most important thing is to have fun. I’m grateful to be able to create music and tour, and it’s an honor to meet the metal fans, for sure.

MiM:  It is very notable how good Phil Flores is as a vocalist, it strongly suggests that he is in excellent condition. How does he manage to maintain that rawness and strength in your voice?

Juan Garcia: Phil worked very hard on this new album; he wrote like 95 percent of all the lyrics on this record! He took his time with the recording and was critical on his vocal delivery. I think he knew specifically how he wanted to sound on the new songs. He’s a season veteran.

 MiM: EvilDead is one of the few bands that has always maintained a rough, fast and aggressive sound. I would like to know if from the beginning you were clear about the sound the band would have?

Juan Garcia: Initially we just wanted to create songs that were heavier than our previous bands, I had just parted ways with Agent Steel, and Abattoir, so the idea was to write something heavier. And it was important to EvilDead at that time to enjoy and have fun with the live shows, no egos or attitudes. Our debut album “Annihilation of Civilization” is a solid, very original debut album, plenty of great contributions from all the band members at the time. I suppose some experience played a part in the recordings as well, since we had roots going back to Agent Steel and Abattoir.

MiM: EvilDead has a history of instability in its ranks in the early years of its career. Do you think that now with this lineup you have achieved the stability you need as a band?

Juan Garcia: The current line-up is solid; we have the same line-up from our last album “United States of Anarchy” (2020) on this new album, “Toxic Grace.” We get along well, and we hope to continue in creating kick ass metal.

MiM: The album “Annihilation of Civilization” (1989) is celebrating its 35th year of being released on the market this year. Will there be a remastered or deluxe version to celebrate?

Juan Garcia: We hope that it will be re-issued in the near future; hopefully towards the end of this year, remastering is a great idea for sure. We’ve had discussions about it with our record label.

MiM: What is the creative process of composing music like, is it a collective process, or is there only one or maybe two who compose in the band?

Juan Garcia: It starts with a guitar riff, and Albert Gonzales (Guitarist) has an arsenal of riffs filed away; he will play his ideas to us. From there, I will add guitar ideas, or not, depending on if it needs extra layers, or additional riffs. Then our drummer, and I get together with Albert, and we arrange the parts so they flow and make sense before we present them to our vocalist Phil Flores. We also leave a lot of room for our bassist Carlos to add his bass lines, or additional parts. Then after all that, we may still re-arrange the verses or choruses, add guitar solos, shorten or lengthen the song. It’s a lot of work, but it’s inspiring. Eventually, we’ll go into a recording studio and demo the ideas before finally recording them for release. Occasionally, it can be a more collective process, depending on the song and situation. It can also happen when we are rehearsing old songs, sometimes you stumble on a good idea, and we will record it and work on it at a later time.

MiM: You are part of the Body Count lineup. How difficult is it to organize times to be able to dedicate time to Evildead?

Juan Garcia: It’s not so difficult, keep in mind: Body Count vocalist Ice-T is also an actor, so at times he's maybe filming for television or a movie. So when he’s busy doing that, I take the time to work on EvilDead as much as possible, I also work on Body Count as well as much as possible. It’s a matter of juggling schedules, that’s all. I treat both bands evenly and fair, music is my passion.

MiM: With this harsh sound, the band marks a sonic difference from the usual sound of current Thrash Metal bands. Tell me about it?

Juan Garcia: We just try to be as original as possible and create songs that we like, and if our fans and other people enjoy our music, then it’s a plus. We constantly try to sound as best as we can; we are also very aware that we are an underground thrash metal band, though. Sonically, we try to stick to our roots of metal.

MiM: I feel in this album a great influence of the sound and cadence of bands like Slayer when playing. What is your criterion on this? What are your main influences when composing new material?

Juan Garcia: To create music that we enjoy listening to. We attempt to come up with original ideas, and heavy creative musical passages without limitations, wherever that may lead? We don’t know until we feel the song is finished. And if we don’t like what we create, we simply shelve the idea and start over. I think this band influences each other individually, and we push each other to compose the best we can.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? Concerts or tours scheduled this year?

Juan Garcia: Currently, we have a show on 16-August with Whiplash in Los Angeles scheduled, we are also performing at the California Death fest with Sodom later this year. We are planning to film a new music video in the coming months after I get back from Europe in June with Body Count. We hope to book more shows in the States for 2024, and return to Europe in 2025 for a tour and some festivals.
