Alguien sabe que a nuestra web les gusta el trabajo de los buenos bateristas, porque cuando solicitamos la entrevista a F.M. se nos asignó al batero Pete Jupp, quien amablemente nos respondió.

MiM - Hola Pete, ¿Cómo estás? Siempre nos ha gustado hablar con bateristas y en este caso particular eres también miembro fundador de  FM ¿Cómo te sientes después de todo este tiempo con el grupo?
PJ - Cuando la banda se separó en los 90s pensé que podría tocar en algunos sitios grandes, etc; pero después de nuestro regreso en el Firefest 2007 continuamos haciendo conciertos en grandes arenas con bandas como Foreigner y Journey. Lo logramos dos veces. Los mejores festivales europeos y giras por Gran Bretaña que fueron muy exitosas. Me siento un ser privilegiado por regresar y lograrlo de nuevo, y además me gusta.  

MiM - Steve Overland es uno de los mejores cantantes de este mundo. Trabajas con él desde los días en que estaban juntos en Wildlife. ¿Conoces el secreto de su voz? ¿Cómo la puede mantener?
PJ - Conozco a Steve desde hace casi 40 años y en mi opinión mejora cada vez mas. Steve se cuida mucho, corre casi todos los dias. Pienso que ni siquiera él sabe el secreto de su talento vocal, solo que tiene ese maravilloso don.

MiM - FM está ahora mucho más activo que nunca. Desde 2010 han grabado 4 CD’s:   Metropolis (2010), Rockville (2013), Rockville II (2013) y Heroes and Villains (2015). ¿Cuéntame qué está pasando con la banda? ¿Es que tienen  más tiempo libre?
PJ – Y no olvides los 4 Ep's y dos Dvd's, jaja. Nos mantenemos rodando. Las ideas para las canciones se mantienen fluyendo.  Nosotros no lo analizamos demasiado profundamente para evitar que las cosas se sequen.  Divertirse hace que las cosas salgan más fácilmente.

MiM – Por otra parte, la banda no vive del pasado y está grabando un montón de canciones nuevas de gran calidad. ¿Han pensado en un futuro remezclar vuestros grandes éxitos de siempre o sacar algún trabajo relacionado con una colección de éxitos?
PJ – Mientras el nuevo material esté fluyendo seguiremos adelante. No regresaremos atrás, así que sacar un “Grandes Éxitos” no está en nuestros planes ahora mismo. Pensamos que nuestros fans aun están hambrientos de nueva música hecha por FM.

MiM – Queríamos hablar sobre el Nuevo CD, Heroes and Villains. A propósito de la introducción de “Diggin up the Dirt”, ¿Por qué decidiste comenzar con ese ritmo? Usas un cencerro, algo que no haces comúnmente, ¿por qué en esta canción?
PJ – El ritmo, y usar un cencerro me pareció que venía bien a la canción, tan simple como eso.

MiM – Algunos chicos más jóvenes consideran que ustedes han sido influenciados por bandas como Def Leppard cuando escuchan canciones como “Digging in the Dirt” o “Shape I’m in”. Por el contrario, ellos han sido influenciados por FM. ¿Qué crees de esto?
PJ – Tenemos muchas influencias y Def Leppard están entre ellas, pero no más que bandas como Free, Bad Company, Foreigner y muchas otras.

MiM – Lo que si me maravilló fue descubrir que Iron Maiden fue influenciado por FM. Sin embargo hasta donde sé, Bruce Dickinson y tu tocaron en Samson pero no coincidieron en tiempo. ¿Me equivoco? En tu opinión ¿Cómo una banda como FM puede influenciar a alguien tan heavy como Iron Maiden?
PJ - Iron Maiden hizo una versión de “That Girl” en la cara B del single “Stranger in a Strange Land” pero no puedo asegurar que seamos una influencia en su música. Ellos son una gran banda que se mantiene entregando material año tras año. Yo formé parte de Samson después que Bruce se marchara, desafortunadamente, no pude tocar con él.

MiM – Una de mis canciones favoritas de  Heroes and Villain es “Fire and Rain”. ¿Cómo se escribió?
PJ - Steve y yo hicimos la idea básica como un demo, se la llevamos al resto de los chicos y la fuimos desarrollando en los ensayos antes de grabarla.

MiM - Cuéntame, como es el proceso de composición en FM. Tú eres parte activa del mismo. ¿Das ideas acerca de las letras o es la música tu don más preciado? Teniendo en cuenta que también tocas la guitarra, ¿escribes las canciones basadas en la guitarra más que en la batería?
PJ -  Ahora tenemos unos ordenadores muy poderosos a nuestra disposición y con ellos encuentro el proceso de composición mucho más fácil. Escribo algunos de los textos y algunas de mis ideas para canciones a veces comienzan con la guitarra. No tengo ninguna regla, las idea pueden  comenzar de cualquier manera.

MiM – Me pareció algo extraño que la banda editara en el 2013 Rockville y Rockville II como dos discos separados. ¿Por qué no vino en edición doble CD? ¿Cuáles son las principales diferencias entre los Rockville y Heroes and Villains?
PJ – Teníamos suficientes canciones para hacer dos álbumes y eso fue lo que hicimos. Pienso que Heroes and Villains es una progresión natural de Rockville l y ll. Todos los discos fueron muy bien recibidos lo cual nos puso, obviamente, muy contentos.  

MiM - ¿Cuál es tu canción favorita de Heroes and Villains? ¿Y tu canción favorita de FM?
PJ – “You're The Best Thing About Me” es por el momento mi canción favorita de Heroes and Villains. ¿Mi canción favorita de FM? Esa sí que está dificil. Ahora mismo te diría “Unbreakable” del disco Metropolis, pero eso puede cambiar la semana que viene, jajaja.

MiM – No quiero perder la oportunidad de preguntarte ¿cuáles son tus bateristas favoritos? A veces mencionas a Gene Krupa o Buddy Rich. Sin embargo, no reconozco influencias de jazz, música negra o latina en tu manera de tocar. Por el contrario, tienes mucho de John Bonham porque golpeas la batería duro pero al mismo tiempo con elegancia. Me gustaría saber tu opinión sobre esto aunque es una pregunta que has respondido muchas veces y siento volver a preguntarte.
PJ - Simon Kirke, John Bonham y Ian Paice fueron muy influyentes en mi estilo. Vi a Buddy Rich hace mucho, muchos años en el Hammersmith Odeon y fue totalmente increíble. El último fue el gran Jeff Porcaro, alguien a quien admiré inmensamente por su groove y sabor, un maravilloso músico. Fui muy afortunado de conocerle pero ese día quedé deslumbrado y perdí el dominio de la voz.

MiM – He leído que practicas deporte, ¿Cuán importante es el deporte para un buen baterista?
PJ – Trato y me mantengo en tan buena forma cómo puedo, batallando en el gimnasio la mayor parte de los días. ¿Lo disfruto?  No, ni lo más mínimo, jaja, pero tengo que hacerlo. Solía disfrutar practicar futbol,   pero desafortunadamente, mis rodillas ya están tocadas.

MiM – La banda pronto tocará en España, ¿qué podemos esperar?
PJ – Todas las canciones favoritas, seguro, mas algún que otro nuevo material. Queremos tener una gran fiesta y todos nuestros conciertos anteriores en España lo han sido. No podemos esperar a llegar allá.

MiM – Muchas gracias, Pete.

Somebody knows we like good drummers’ job because when we ask for an interview F.M. the designate musician was the drummer Pete Jupp, who nicely deals with our questions.

While new material is flowing we're just looking forward

MiM - Hello Pete, How are you? We are always happy to speak with a drummer, and in this individual case, you are almost a founding member of FM (or a founding member without “almost”. How do you feel after all this time in the band?
PJ - When the band split in the 90s I thought that would be it for me playing big venues etc but after our return at Firefest 07 we've gone on to doing arenas with Foreigner and Journey, Download twice, high profile European Festivals and very successful U.K. tours. I feel very privileged to be back out there doing it and I'm loving it too.

MiM - Steve Overland is one of the better singers around the world. You were working with him since the Wildlife days. Can you tell us the secret of his voice? How can he maintain this beautiful voice?
PJ - I've known Steve for nearly 40 years and in my opinion he just gets better and better. Steve looks after himself, he runs most days. I don't think Steve actually knows the secret of his vocal talents he just has this amazing gift.

MiM - We felt that FM is now more active than ever. From 2010 on there has been four CD’s: Metropolis (2010), Rockville (2013), Rockville II (2013) and Heroes and Villains (2015). Tell me, what is happening with the band? Do you have more free time or something?
PJ - Don't forget the 4 Ep's and two Dvd's : ) We're on a roll so we just keep going. The song ideas keep flowing. We're not analyzing too deeply in case things dry up. We're having fun which makes things easier.

MiM - On the other hand, the band is not living from the past, recording a lot of new and high quality songs. Were you thinking to remix a collection of your all time greatest hits in a nearly future or something related to a collection of hits?
PJ - While new material is flowing we're just looking forward not back so a greatest hits isn't in our plans right now. We think our fans are still hungry for new FM music.

MiM - We would like to speak about the new CD, Heroes and Villains. By the way, about the introduction of “Diggin up the Dirt”, how did you decide to begin with that rhythm? You use a cowbell, but you don´t usually use it. Why in this song?
PJ - The groove and use of cowbell seemed to fit the song simple as that.

MiM - Some new guys consider you are influenced by bands like Def Leppard when they listening songs like “Digging in the Dirt” or “Shape I’m in”. On the contrary, they are influenced by FM and other bands. What do you think about it?
PJ - We have lots of influences and Def Leppard is in there for sure but no more than Free, Bad Company, Foreigner and many more.

MiM - I was amazing to discover that Iron Maiden was influenced by FM. However, as long as I know, Bruce Dickinson and you didn´t coincide in Samson? Am I wrong? In your opinion, how can FM influence a band as heavy as Iron Maiden?
PJ - Iron Maiden did a cover of That Girl on the B Side of Stranger in a Strange Land but I'm not sure if we're an influence on their music. They're a great band who keeps delivering the goods year after year. I was in Samson after Bruce left so didn't get to play with him unfortunately.

MiM - One of my favorite Heroes and Villain songs is “Fire and Rain”. How the band wrote it?
PJ - Steve and I got the basic idea down as a demo and we took it to the guys and we developed it in rehearsals before recording it.

MiM - Tell me, how is the writing process in FM. You are an active part on it. Do you give ideas about the lyrics or is the music your stronger gift? Taking account you play guitar too, do you write songs based on guitars more than on drums?
PJ - Now we have such powerful computers at our disposal I personally find the writing process much easier to get ideas down. I write some lyrics and some of my song ideas may start on guitar I don't have any rules whatever works to get the idea started.

MiM - It was something weird that the band edited in 2013 Rockville and Rockville II. Why didn´t you released a double CD? What are the main differences between the Rockville CDs and Heroes and Villains?
PJ - We had enough songs for two albums so that's what we did. I think Heroes and Villains is a natural progression from Rockville l and ll. All the albums were well received which we're obviously very happy about.

MiM - What is your favorite song of Heroes and Villains? And your favorite all-time FM songs?
PJ - You're The Best Thing About Me is a favorite at the moment from Heroes and Villains. Favorite FM song ever? That's a tough one. Right now I'll say Unbreakable from Metropolis but that could change next week, haha.

MiM - I don´t want to lose the opportunity to ask you what are your favorite drummers? Sometimes you mention Gene Krupa or Buddy Rich. However, I don´t recognize influences of jazz, black music or Latin music in your way of playing. On the contrary, I consider you have a lot of John Bonham because you hit the drums hard and elegant at the same time. I would like to have your point on this. I know that is a question you have answered a lot of time. I´m sorry.
PJ - Simon Kirke, John Bonham and Ian Paice were big influences on me. I saw Buddy Rich many, many years ago at Hammersmith Odeon which was totally amazing. The late great Jeff Porcaro was someone I admired immensely for his groove and taste, a wonderful player. I was lucky enough to meet him but I got all starstruck and lost the power of speech.

MiM - I read you practice sports. How important are sports to be a good drummer?
PJ - I try and keep fit the best I can and slog it out in the gym most days. Do I enjoy it?  No not in the slightest, haha. But it has to be done. I used to enjoy playing football but unfortunately my knees are a bit shot now.

MiM - The band will be so soon playing in Spain. What can we expect?
PJ - All the favorite songs for sure plus some newer material. We want to have a big party and our previous Spanish shows have been just that. We can't wait.
