El 26 de mayo, la banda sueca de Death/Thrash Metal Carry the Torch lanzó su nuevo álbum 'Delusion' a través de Black Lion Records. Excelente oportunidad para que Made in Metal hable con Dennis Johansson, el cantante, para aprender todo sobre este álbum y la historia de la banda.

MiM: 'Delusion' tiene un sonido áspero, oscuro y pesado. Con guitarras afiladas y una voz de las cavernas del inframundo, sin dejar de tener pasajes melódicos exquisitos. ¡¡Excelente!! ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum? ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la producción? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?

CT: En primer lugar, ¡gracias por esas amables palabras! Nos alegra escuchar eso. Philip Nilsson, guitarrista de la banda, escribió las canciones y luego las “ajustamos” juntas. Dennis escribió letras y arreglos vocales. Björn grabó la batería en un estudio llamado Zooker en el sur de Öland, Suecia. Luego bajo y guitarras en el propio estudio de Philips en Boxholm. Dennis grabó las voces en casa esta vez, debido al covid. Tomó un tiempo debido al covid y algunos otros problemas a nivel personal para mí (Dennis), pero fue divertido grabar y apuntaba a una sesión más cruda y viva. Espero que eso se traduzca en las canciones.

MiM: "Delusion" es un disco donde los pasajes melódicos son muy recurrentes a lo largo del disco, lo que lo hace bastante interesante y atractivo para llegar a audiencias más amplias. ¿Es tan? ¿Cuál es tu criterio?

CT: La respuesta corta tal vez sería, sí. Estamos tratando de familiarizarnos más con nuestro sonido, tenemos una "visión clara" de lo que queremos ser y sonar, pero siempre se ha tratado de las canciones, una a la vez. Ganchos, melodías y canciones fuertes son el objetivo. Por supuesto, queremos que la gente los recuerde después del espectáculo.

MiM: Me gustaría saber si desde un principio ya tenían muy claro el sonido que tendría la banda.

CT: En parte respondí eso arriba, pero sí, nos gusta llevar adelante la antorcha del metal agresivo. Sin dejar caer nombres, pero nos gustan las mismas bandas y tratamos de incorporar algunas de sus influencias en lo que hacemos.

MiM: ¿Quiénes son tus principales influencias a la hora de componer nuevo material?

CT: Para mí, en lo que respecta a la letra, me volví hacia mi vida en general, lo que veo y lo que paso. No siempre escribo exactamente esas palabras, pero si investigas un poco, creo que puedes encontrar mis pensamientos allí.

MiM: La voz en este disco es áspera, fuerte. Contiene ira y rabia. ¡¡Es excelente!! ¿Como lo hace? ¿De dónde viene toda esta ira?

CT: A veces bromeo y digo que es un exorcismo. Expulso la mierda mala de mi cuerpo cuando canto, como un buen entrenamiento en el gimnasio o en las pistas, corriendo. Todos necesitamos esa salida y he encontrado la manera de deshacerme de algunos de mis demonios.

MiM: ¿Proyecto de gira o conciertos en los próximos meses?

CT: Sí, estamos tocando en algunos shows en Suecia cuando salga el álbum. Espero que la lista se alargue un poco más ahora. Esperamos con ansias nuestro concierto en nuestra ciudad natal, Kalmar. Ha pasado un tiempo, y nos encanta jugar aquí. El otoño y el invierno contendrán más conciertos y tal vez algo de escritura en el tercer y cuarto lanzamiento.

On May 26th Swedish Death/Thrash Metal band Carry the Torch released their new album 'Delusion' through Black Lion Records. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk with Dennis Johansson, the singer, to learn everything about this album and the history of the band.

MiM: 'Delusion' has a rough, dark and heavy sound. With sharp guitars and a voice from the caves of the underworld, while still having exquisite melodic passages. Excellent!! What can you tell me about this album? Who was in charge of the production? How was the recording and production process?

CT: First of all, thanks for those kind words! We are glad to hear that. Philip Nilsson, guitarist of the band wrote the songs and then we “tweaked” them together. Dennis wrote lyrics and vocal arrangements. Björn recorded drums in a studio called Zooker in the southern parts of Öland, Sweden. Then bass and guitars in Philips own studio in Boxholm. Dennis recorded the vocals at home this time, due to covid. It took a while because of covid and some other issues on a personal level for me(Dennis), but it was fun to record and I was aiming for a more raw and alive session. Hope that translates in the songs.

MiM: "Delusion" is an album where the melodic passages are very recurrent, making it quite interesting and attractive to reach larger audiences. Is it so? What are your criteria?

CT: Short answer maybe would be, yes. We are trying to get more familiar with our sound, we have a quite “Clear View” of what we want to be and sound like, but it has always been about the songs, one at a time. Hooks, melodies, and strong songs are the goal. Off course do we want people to remember them after the show.

MiM: I would like to know if from the beginning they were already very clear about the sound that the band would have.

CT: Partly answered that above, but yes, we like to Carry The Torch of aggressive metal forward. No name-dropping, but we like the same bands and try to incorporate some of their influences in what we do.

MiM: Who are your main influences when composing new material?

CT: For me as far as the lyrics go, I turned to my life in general, what I see and go through. I don’t always write precisely those words down, but if you dig a bit, I think you can find my thoughts there.

MiM: The voice on this record is rough and strong. Contains anger and rage. It's excellent!! As it does? Where does all this anger come from?

CT: I sometimes joke and say that it’s exorcism. I drive the bad shit out of my body when I sing, just like a good workout at the gym or in the tracks, running. We all need that outlet and I have found my way of getting rid of some of my demons.

MiM: Tour project or concerts in the coming months?

CT: Yeah, We are playing some shows in Sweden when the album hits. Hope to get that list getting a bit longer just now and looking forward to our gig in our hometown Kalmar. It has been a while, and we love to play here. The fall and winter will contain more gigs and maybe some writing on the third and fourth releases.
