Los húngaros de Thrash/Groove Metal Ektomorf se han consolidado desde hace tres décadas como una de las bandas más importantes de la escena internacional. Fundada por el compositor, líder, guitarrista y vocalista de la banda, Zoltán “Zoli” Farkas. Made in Metal conversa con él para conocer lparte de su pasado y su futuro
MiM: Casi tres décadas de trabajo avalan el excelente trabajo de la banda en todos estos años. ¿Cómo fueron esos inicios?
EM: Oye, hombre, gracias por invitarme. Bueno, todo empezó en la escuela. Me enamoré de la música heavy y conseguí una guitarra gracias a mi padre. Luego fue intentar hacer música con amigos a quienes les gustaba la misma música.
MiM: ¿Por qué la decisión de formar la banda? ¿Qué tan difícil fue ingresar al mundo de la industria musical? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de ingreso a AFM Records?
EM: Fue difícil abrirse paso, especialmente desde Hungría, desde el pequeño pueblo de donde vengo. Incluso fue difícil tener la oportunidad de tocar en un espectáculo fuera de nuestra ciudad. Tocar un show en Budapest fue, sí, jodidamente difícil, pero como lo principal era y sigue siendo el amor por la música y estar en el escenario, fue un placer hacerlo. La primera compañía discográfica real fue Nuclear Blast; luego vino AFM. Bueno, el estilo era claro: música heavy. Como a todos nos gustaba ese estilo, a lo largo de los años cambió y adoptó una nueva forma, especialmente a principios de la década de 2000, cuando llegó el nuevo metal. Esa fue una gran influencia.
MiM: Hace unos meses lanzaron la versión de la canción “Heart-Shaped Box” de Nirvana. Al parecer, no existe ninguna conexión musical entre Nirvana y Ektomorf. ¿Cómo surgió la idea? ¿Esta portada será parte del nuevo álbum?
EM: La versión de Nirvana surgió de una simple sesión improvisada en casa, filmé una pequeña parte y la subí a Facebook. Obtuvo mucha atención en poco tiempo, como 100.000 visitas, así que pensé: “Hagámoslo”. La recepción fue mixta; A algunos les gustó, otros dijeron que nos hemos ablandado... Así que todo esto se puede comprobar para el nuevo álbum; “Vivid Black” está terminado y saldrá en diciembre de 2023. Escribí el álbum en tres semanas esta primavera y encargué el bajo y la batería a Hungría, además de las guitarras. Luego, para las voces en Dinamarca, todas las grabaciones las hicimos con mi viejo amigo, el productor danés Tue Madsen. Para mí es un miembro de la banda para siempre. El álbum es el más pesado y oscuro que jamás haya escrito.
MiM: ¿Qué puedes decirme sobre este nuevo álbum? ¿Cuál es el tema lírico? ¿Este nuevo disco tiene invitados?
EM: Este álbum es simplemente ultra-heavy, sin descanso, incluso cuando hay una canción lenta como “REM” o “Vivid Black”, porque ambas son demasiado oscuras para descansar. Te mantendrán bajo presión con una atmósfera pesada. Las letras de todos ellos tratan sobre algunas personas que preferiría nunca conocer o ver muertas. Maldito pedazo de mierda que se llevó una parte de mí que con gusto se la daría a quien se lo merece. Los odio y eso nunca cambiará. Además, mi madre falleció. Ella pasó por una enfermedad larga y horrible, y aunque yo estaba ahí para ella, no pude evitar soltar algunas canciones. Fueron tiempos realmente oscuros los que me hicieron quién soy ahora, y no hay nada agradable en eso. No hay invitados en este álbum; nadie podría serlo; es demasiado personal.
MiM: ¿Cómo es que se da el proceso creativo en la banda al momento de componer, estructurar y decidir qué canciones o composiciones formarán parte de un álbum?
EM: Escribo todo, música, letras, e incluso la mayor parte de la producción, soy yo. No creo que 4 o 5 chicos juntos en una habitación sepan escribir. Han pasado 30 años desde que lo hice y también lo vi en otras bandas. Cada uno tenía lo suyo que hacer en una banda. Y es bueno así.
MiM: Sois una banda con varios años de formación, muchos discos y muchos conciertos en su carrera. Mirando hacia atrás, ¿cómo calificarías el trabajo de la banda todos estos años?
EM: Llegamos a los 30 años, así que es productivo y exitoso, pero no siempre es fácil. Hay altibajos, y tuve ambos, a veces por un disco, a veces por otras cosas. La vida vio los años del COVID-19. Hay bandas que surgen muy rápido, se vuelven enormes y luego caen desde lo alto y nunca pueden volver a subir. Este es el caso de bandas de lanzamiento de singles. Estoy feliz con lo que tengo; ha sido un largo viaje, pero después de todo, es un sueño hecho realidad. Vivo y amo cada parte de esto, y me siento afortunado de poder hacerlo.
MiM: Una vez que el álbum esté disponible para todos los fans de la banda, ¿qué planes tienes para promocionarlo? ¿Giras o conciertos en los próximos meses?
EM: Haremos una gira en marzo por Europa; Es una gira como cabeza de cartel y durará más de un mes sin días libres. Me encanta eso, más que los festivales y demás, mientras sea posible y en todos los lugares donde sea posible.
MiM: ¿Cómo describirías un show en vivo de Ektomorf?
EM: Se trata de energía y potencia. Si vienes a un concierto de Ektomorf, eso es lo que puedes esperar y obtener.

The Hungarian Thrash/Groove Metal Ektomorf has been establishing itself for three decades as one of the most important bands on the international scene. Founded by the composer, leader, guitarist, and vocalist of the band, Zoltán "Zoli" Farkas. Made in Metal talks with Zoltán "Zoli" Farkas to know the next movements in 2023 and 2024.
MiM: Almost three decades of work guarantee the excellent work of the band in all these years. How were those beginnings?
EM: Hey, man, thank you for having me. Well, it all started back in school. I fell in love with heavy music and got a guitar thanks to my father. Trying to make music with friends who liked the same music
MiM: Why the decision to form the band? How difficult was it to enter the world of the music industry? How was the entry process for AFM Records? I would like to know if, from the beginning, they were already obvious about the sound that the band would have.
EM: It was hard to break through, especially from Hungary, from the small village I came from. It was even hard to get the chance to play a show outside our town. Playing a show in Budapest was, yes, really fucking hard, but because the main thing was and still is the love of the music and being on stage, it was a pleasure to do. The first real record company was Nuclear Blast; then came AFM. Well, the style was clear: heavy music. Since we all liked that style, it changed and took on a new form through the years, especially in the early 2000s when new metal came in. That was a big influence.
MiM: A few months ago, they released the cover of Nirvana's song “Heart-Shaped Box”. Apparently, there is no musical connection between Nirvana and Ektomorf. How did the idea come about? Will this cover be part of the new album?
EM: The Nirvana cover came from a simple jam session at home, and I filmed a little part of it and uploaded it on Facebook. It got a lot of attention in a short time, like 100K views, so I thought, “Let’s do it”. The reception was mixed; some liked it, some said we got pussy... So all this can be checked for the new album; the album is done and will be out in December 2023. I wrote the album in three weeks this spring and ordered the bass and drums in Hungary, as well as the guitars. Then, for vocals in Denmark, all recordings were done with my longtime friend, Danish producer Tue Madsen. He’s to me a band member forever. The album is the heaviest and darkest I've ever written.
MiM: What can you tell me about this new album? What is the lyrical theme? Does this new album have any guests?
EM: This album is simply ultra-heavy, with no rest even when there is a slow song like “REM” or “Vivid Black,” because they both are just far too dark to rest. They will keep you under pressure with a heavy atmosphere. The lyrics to all of them are just about some people I would rather never meet or see dead. Fucking piece of shit who took a part of me that I would gladly give to those who deserve it. I hate them, and it will never change. Furthermore, my mother passed away. She went through a long and horrible sickness, and even though I was there for her, I could not help but let some songs out of me. Just really dark times that made me who I am now, and there is nothing nice about that. No guests on this album; no one could be; it’s far too personal.
MiM: How is it that the creative process takes place in the band at the time of composing, structuring, and deciding which songs or compositions will be part of an album?
EM: I write everything, music, lyrics, and even the big part of the producing is me. I don’t believe that 4–5 guys can write. It’s been 30 years since I've done it, and I saw it in other bands too. Everybody had their own thing to do in a band. And it’s good that way.
MiM: You are a band with several years of training, many records, and many concerts in their career. Looking back, how would you rate the work of the band all these years?
EM: I got to 30 years by, so it’s productive and successful, but not always easy. There are ups and downs, and I had both, sometimes from a record, sometimes from other things. Life sees the COVID-19 years. There are bands that come up really fast, get huge, and then fall big from the top, never being able to climb back. This is the case with this single-release band. I’m happy with what I have; it’s been a long journey, but after all, it’s a dream come true. I live and love every part of it, and I feel lucky to do this.
MiM: Once the album is available to all the fans of the band, what plans do you have to promote it? Tours or concerts in the coming months?
EM: We will tour in March in Europe; it’s a headlining tour and will be longer than a month with no days off. I love that than festivals and so on go on as long as it’s possible and everywhere it’s possible.
MiM: How would you describe a live Ektomorf show?
EM: It's all about energy and power. If you come to an Ektomorf show, that’s what you can expect and get.
