El ascenso triunfal de los titanes daneses del Blackened/Death Metal LIVLØS continúa con el tercer álbum épico del quinteto, el álbum conceptual “The Crescent King”. El cual será lanzado el 4 de octubre bajo el sello discográfico Noctum Productions. Esta es una excelente oportunidad para que Made in Metal hable con el bajista Benjamin Andreassen, para descubrir todo sobre este nuevo álbum.

MiM: “The Crescent King” (Noctum Productions, 2024) es un álbum con una fuerza visceral increíble. Un sonido fuerte, seco y pesado. ¿Qué me puedes contar sobre este álbum? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción y grabación?

BA: Muchas gracias. Estamos increíblemente felices con el resultado de este álbum. Supongo que muchas bandas tienden a preferir su último lanzamiento, ¡pero realmente sentimos que este es el mejor hasta ahora! “The Crescent King” será nuestro tercer álbum y un hito importante para nosotros. Ha pasado un buen tiempo desde nuestro segundo álbum, And Then There Were None, y nos gusta pensar que hemos mejorado como compositores, narradores de historias e intérpretes, tanto individualmente como en equipo. En parte debido a los muchos shows que dimos después de ese álbum.

Como siempre hacemos, escribimos el material en el espacio de ensayo como una unidad. Claro, intercambiamos riffs a través de preproducciones y demos internos, pero una pista nunca está terminada hasta que nos sentimos cómodos tocándola juntos, habiendo invertido todos los instrumentos en ella en un entorno en vivo. Con ese fin, las pistas suenan como las tocamos, sin un pulido excesivo, capas o edición.

Lo grabamos con nuestro querido amigo Jacob Bredahl, que es un personaje conocido en la escena y cuyo enfoque es muy similar. No se demora en muchos de los “trucos” modernos y, a menudo, sacude la cabeza con consternación, pidiéndote que “la toques bien”. ¡Su estudio también funciona como nuestro espacio de ensayo, por lo que eso también facilitó innumerables cosas!

MiM: ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás de “The Crescent King”? ¿Cuál es la historia que cuentan?

BA: The Crescent King está ambientado en un universo ficticio, profundamente inspirado en múltiples fuentes de clásicos de ciencia ficción y fantasía. Si bien los personajes y las ubicaciones son ficticios, todos tienen raíces en la psique humana y los eventos de nuestro mundo. Hemos puesto un esfuerzo significativo en las letras, así que en lugar de colorearlas de antemano, tendremos curiosidad por escuchar los propios paralelos e interpretaciones del oyente. También es un álbum conceptual, lo cual no es tan típico de las bandas de death metal, pero fue un buen formato para nuestra narrativa, permitiéndonos contar una historia de forma natural, con desarrollo, emoción y resolución. 

MiM: “The Crescent King” es un álbum con un sonido poderoso. Me gustaría saber si, desde el principio, sabían qué sonido querían transmitir en este álbum.

BA: Nunca se sabe al 100%, ¿verdad? Hay muchas variables en el proceso de composición y grabación, pero diré que esta vez teníamos una idea más fuerte del producto final. Entramos al estudio con una idea más fuerte de lo que es el sonido de LIVLØS y lo que necesitábamos hacer para llegar allí: y escuchando el producto final ahora, ¡encaja perfectamente! Como una banda más joven, es fácil entrar a un estudio sin preconcepciones, confiando todo al ingeniero. Pero al ver que nosotros (Jacob Bredahl & Band) nos conocemos tan bien, la grabación y la producción se convierten mucho más en una colaboración, en lugar de una interacción unilateral.

MiM: Los críticos especializados los etiquetan como una banda de death metal, pero en “The Crescent King”, se siente una marcada influencia del black metal. ¿Es así? ¿Cómo lo ves?

BA: ¡Bien visto, y lo tomaremos como un cumplido! Nunca nos sentamos y dijimos, “Vamos a poner algunos elementos de black metal ahí”, pero la inspiración se está volviendo más evidente, sin duda, especialmente desde que recibimos a Benjamin (bajo) el año pasado, quien es un gran fan de bandas como Immortal, Taake, Emperor, etc. Al ver que el álbum conceptual cuenta una historia, con altos y bajos, la dinámica se vuelve primordial, y hemos utilizado todas las herramientas a nuestra disposición para transmitir el mensaje, algunas de las cuales se originan en el black metal.  

BA: ¡Increíble que pienses eso, muchas gracias! “Solace” establece el escenario. Es una pieza ambiental que presenta la única letra en danés del álbum. Se relaciona con la pregunta anterior sobre la dinámica y es probable que sea donde veas algo de inspiración previa. Más allá de eso, hemos estado usando una versión ligeramente alterada de la canción (no se puede transmitir en ningún lado) para nuestro show en vivo por un tiempo.

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionarla?

BA: Como promotor, escribiendo esta entrevista, todo lo que puedo decir es que permanezcan atentos en las próximas semanas. 

BA: Gracias por escuchar nuestra música, venir a nuestros shows y mostrar tu apoyo a la escena. Significa el mundo para nosotros y bandas como nosotros. LIVLØS acaba de celebrar su décimo aniversario a principios de este año.10 años de creación, hermandad y una vida de altibajos personales. The triumphant rise of Danish Blackened/Death Metal titans LIVLØS continues with the quintet's epic third full-length, the concept album “The Crescent King.” Which will be released on October 4 under the Noctum Productions record label. This is an excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk to bass player Benjamin Andreassen, to find out everything about this new album.

MiM: “The Crescent King” (Noctum Productions, 2024) is an album with incredible visceral force. Strong, dry, and heavy sound. What can you tell me about this album? What was the production and recording process like?

BA: Thank you so much. We are incredibly happy with how this album turned out. I suppose many bands tend to prefer their latest release, but we genuinely feel this is the best one so far! “The Crescent King” will be our third album and an important milestone for us. It's been a good while since our second album, And Then There Were None, and we like to think we have improved as songwriters, storytellers, and performers, both individually and as a unit. Partly due to the many shows we played following that album.

As we always do, we write the material in the rehearsal space as a unit. Sure, we throw riffs back and forth via pre-productions and internal demos, but a track is never finished until we are comfortable playing it together, having invested all the instruments into it in a live setting. To that end, the tracks sound like how we play them, without excessive polish, layering, or editing.

We recorded it with our dear friend Jacob Bredahl, who is a well-known character on the scene and whose approach is very similar. He does not dawdle in many of the modern “tricks” and often shakes his head in dismay, asking you to “play it right!” His studio doubles down as our rehearsal space, so that made countless things easier as well!

MiM: What is the concept behind “The Crescent King”? What is the story they tell?

BA: The Crescent King is set in a fictional universe, deeply inspired by multiple sources of sci-fi and fantasy classics. While the characters and locations are fictional, all of them have roots in the human psyche and events in our world. We’ve put significant effort into the lyrics, so instead of coloring you in advance, we’ll be curious to hear the listener's own parallels and interpretations. It is also a concept album, which is not that typical of death metal bands, but it was a good format for our narrative, allowing us to tell a story naturally, with development, emotion, and resolution.

MiM: “The Crescent King” is an album with a powerful sound. I would like to know if, from the beginning, you knew what sound you wanted to convey on this album.

BA: You never know 100%, right? There are so many variables in the writing & recording process, but I will say that we had a stronger sense of the final product this time around. We came into the studio with a stronger sense of what the LIVLØS sound is and what we needed to do to get there: and listening to the final product now, it lines up perfectly! As a younger band, it is easy to enter a studio with no preconception, trusting everything to the engineer. But seeing as we (Jacob Bredahl & Band) know each other so well, the recording and production become much more of a collaboration, instead of a one-sided interaction.

MiM: Specialized critics label it as a death metal band, but in “The Crescent King,” a marked influence of black metal is felt. Is that so? How do you see it?

BA: Well spotted, and we’ll take it as a compliment! We never sat down and said, “Let’s put some black metal elements in there”, but the inspiration is becoming more evident, no doubt, especially since welcoming Benjamin (bass) last year, who is a big fan of bands like Immortal, Taake, Emperor, etc. Seeing as the conceptual album tells a story, with highs and lows, dynamics become paramount - and we have utilized all the tools at our disposal to get the message across, some of which originate in black metal.

BA: Amazing that you think so — thanks a lot! “Solace” sets the scene. It is an ambient piece featuring the only Danish lyrics on the album. It ties into the previous question regarding dynamics and is likely where you see some previous inspiration. Beyond that, we have been using a slightly altered version of the track (not streamable anywhere) for our live-show for a while.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote it? 

BA: As pr. writing this interview, all I can say is stay tuned in the coming weeks.
