“Los corsarios y los vikingos se unen en este nuevo disco”

Lo que comenzó en el verano de 2007 como un proyecto de estudio concebido por un puñado de entusiastas fanáticos del Power Metal de Viena, Austria, como “The Dragonslayer Project”, se ha convertido desde hace mucho tiempo en un nombre establecido en el circo internacional del metal. Dragony ahora está listo para lanzar su quinto álbum de estudio, “Hic Svnt Dracones” el 11 de octubre bajo el prestigioso sello discográfico Steamhammer/SPV. Fue una excelente oportunidad para Made in Metal hablar con Siegfried Samer, fundador y vocalista de la banda.

MiM: “Hic Svnt Dracones” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2024) es una joya del power metal melódico. Voces, coros, guitarras épicas y arreglos orquestales impresionantes. ¿Qué me puedes contar sobre este álbum?

SS: ¡Me alegra saber que te gusta! Creemos que es otro gran paso adelante para nosotros después de nuestro álbum anterior “Viribus Unitis”, que hasta ahora consideraba nuestro mejor álbum hasta la fecha. Pero “Hic Svnt Dracones” consigue coger todos los puntos fuertes de “Viribus Unitis” y llevarlos a otro nivel. Tanto en términos de composición y actuaciones individuales, como en el aspecto de la producción, con mezcla y masterización de Jacob Hansen esta vez. En general, creemos que ha resultado ser un álbum muy diverso que combina tanto el power metal de la “vieja escuela” en la línea de bandas de principios de los 2000 como Rhapsody, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Edguy, Avantasia o Hammerfall. También tiene algunas canciones más de estilo power metal “moderno”, como los sencillos “Beyond the Rainbow Bridge” y “Twilight of the Gods”, que realmente funcionan bien en una situación en directo.

MiM: ¿Cómo fue trabajar con Jacob Hansen (Amaranthe, Epica, Sepultura entre otros)? ¿Crees que el trabajo de Jacob es esencial para lograr un álbum tan bonito como este?

SS: Creo absolutamente que sí. Trabajamos con Seeb Levermann de Orden Ogan en nuestro álbum anterior, y él también hizo un trabajo fantástico. Cuando se hizo evidente que lamentablemente no estaría disponible para este álbum, tuvimos que hacer un cambio de último minuto, y afortunadamente, un grande como Jacob Hansen estaba disponible. Se aseguró de que el álbum sonara tan bien como lo hizo. Realmente tiene un gran oído para todos los diferentes tipos de metal, y sabe exactamente lo que necesita cada canción. Fue un verdadero placer trabajar con él; ¡no podemos recomendarlo lo suficiente!

MiM: Siegfried, este álbum es muy notable por lo bueno que eres como vocalista; demuestra que estás en excelentes condiciones. ¿Cómo logras mantener esa fuerza en tu voz a pesar de los años?

SS: ¡Gracias por las amables palabras! También creo que en “Hic Svnt Dracones” pude ofrecer mi mejor interpretación vocal hasta ahora; creo que esto solo viene con la experiencia a lo largo de los años y con la mejora de la técnica y más rutina y práctica. En realidad, ya tenía algunos problemas con las cuerdas vocales cuando lanzamos nuestro primer álbum, “Legends”, en 2012, y me operé las cuerdas vocales en ese entonces porque había dañado mi voz con una mala técnica y por no tener el suficiente cuidado. Hoy en día, trato de tener mucho más cuidado y siempre cantar de una manera “relajada” para no dañar la voz de nuevo. Pero desde la cirugía hace más de diez años, ¡no he tenido ningún problema con mi voz, afortunadamente! 

SS: En general, estamos encantados con el tiempo que hemos podido hacer esto y seguir adelante como banda. También hemos tenido una formación bastante estable durante los últimos diez años, y fue solo ahora después de “Viribus Unitis” que la formación experimentó algunos cambios importantes. Mat llega como nuevo guitarrista y Chris reemplaza a nuestro miembro fundador Frederic en la batería. Afortunadamente, ambos aportaron mucha energía fresca a la banda. Supongo que es porque son bastante más jóvenes que el resto de nosotros, ¡jaja!

Por supuesto, en términos de popularidad general, la banda podría ser más grande después de estar 5 años en el negocio, pero considerando algunas limitaciones que enfrentamos al respetar la capacidad de hacer muchas giras. La mayoría de nosotros tenemos trabajos “regulares” y no podemos salir de gira por períodos prolongados de tiempo a la vez. Nos fue bastante bien y podemos recordar algunos grandes recuerdos, como la gira con Gamma Ray, tocar en Wacken y 70,000 Tons of Metal y, más recientemente, incluso hacer una gira principal por México en octubre de 2023. ¡Definitivamente no podemos quejarnos, jaja!

MiM: Al escuchar el álbum, siento una conexión entre todas las canciones. ¿Es “Hic Svnt Dracones” un álbum conceptual? 

SS: El nuevo álbum es de hecho otro álbum conceptual, similar al estilo que ya teníamos para el álbum anterior “Viribus Unitis”, lo que significa que es un concepto de “historia alternativa” que combina eventos históricos de la vida real con fantasía y mitología. Las canciones del álbum se relacionan con diferentes momentos de la historia conceptual. Por ejemplo, la canción “Dreamchasers” está contada desde la perspectiva del corsario británico Sir Walter Raleigh, quien recibe una carta de la Reina Isabel I. (cuyo papel es interpretado por el rey Carlos I de Inglaterra).por Ambre Vourvahis de Xandria en el álbum) para fundar una colonia en el “Nuevo Mundo”. Fue a fines del siglo XVI que Roanoke se convertiría en una colonia, y es la historia de esta colonia de Roanoke en la que se basa la historia conceptual del álbum. Otra canción que viene más adelante en el álbum es “Twilight of the Gods”. Esta canción está contada desde la perspectiva de un guerrero vikingo, relata los eventos del Ragnarök, el “fin de los días” en la mitología nórdica. MiM: “Hic Svnt Dracones” es una frase utilizada en mapas antiguos para referirse a territorios inexplorados o peligrosos, de acuerdo con la práctica medieval de poner serpientes marinas y otras criaturas mitológicas en mapas de áreas desconocidas. ¿Es así? ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás del nombre del álbum?

SS: ¡Eso es correcto! Usamos esa frase por tres razones diferentes: En primer lugar, está la razón que mencionaste, ya que denota “territorios inexplorados” en viejos mapas marinos. Esto se relaciona con el comienzo de nuestra historia, cuando el corsario británico Sir Walter Raleigh recibe su carta de la Reina Isabel I para fundar una colonia en el continente norteamericano a fines del siglo XVI. Así que esto era en gran medida todavía un “territorio inexplorado” en ese momento. En segundo lugar, el título fue elegido como en nuestra historia (ficticia), la segunda colonia de Roanoke, la infame “Colonia Perdida”, desaparece en una “tierra olvidada por el tiempo” en un giro inspirado en Julio Verne, donde los dinosaurios (¡así que: dragones!) todavía viven. Es en esta “tierra antes del tiempo” donde los colonos británicos también conocen tribus vikingas que habían sufrido un destino similar más de 1000 años antes cuando navegaron a América del Norte. Y finalmente, el nombre de nuestra banda es “Dragony”, y realmente no hemos tenido dragones en las portadas de nuestros álbumes o títulos de álbumes todavía a pesar de nuestros cinco álbumes de estudio, así que creo que realmente ya era hora, ¡jaja! 

SS: ¡Absolutamente! Esta vez tuvimos el placer de trabajar con el compositor y arreglista danés Lasse Elkjaer en la orquestación. Fue perfecto para una historia conceptual como “Hic Svnt Dracones”, ya que realmente tiene un enfoque muy “escénico” para cada canción, y adaptó cada arreglo orquestal de manera muy diferente para cada canción o incluso partes de cada canción. Así que creo que la orquesta realmente complementa muy bien al resto de la banda y lleva las canciones a otro nivel.

MiM: Cuéntame sobre la experiencia de la gira como cabeza de cartel en México en 2023 y la gira con Warkings. ¿Cómo las recibió el público y los fans de la banda?

SS: ¡Ambas fueron experiencias realmente geniales! Con México, fue realmente una sorpresa para nosotros que esto sucediera, ya que un promotor nos invitó a hacer una gira de dos semanas allí, y al principio pensamos, espera un minuto, ¿tiene que haber una trampa en alguna parte? Pero resultó que la persona era perfectamente legítima y realmente organizó todo muy bien para nosotros, y tuvimos una experiencia fantástica, especialmente con los grandes fanáticos en América Latina. ¡Esperamos volver algún día, por supuesto! Y la gira con Warkings también fue muy divertida, a pesar de que solo pudimos unirnos a ellos en cinco shows de esta gira. Realmente son una banda de muy rápido crecimiento, y hemos sido amigos de ellos durante muchos años (por cierto, tocaron su primer show en vivo en 2018 como el “invitado especial” de Dragony para nuestro show de lanzamiento del álbum para nuestro tercer álbum, “Masters of the Multiverse”), y es genial ver que les está yendo tan bien mientras tanto. ¡Con suerte, podremos compartir el escenario nuevamente con ellos en el futuro! Creo que Dragony y Warkings son una gran combinación musical.

MiM: Actualmente, ¿cómo es tu relación con los miembros de Visions of Atlantis?

SS: ¡Excelente, diría yo! Estuve justo en el comienzo de su gran gira europea como cabezas de cartel en Viena el jueves pasado, para ver la nueva producción y lista de canciones y para saludar a los chicos. La banda realmente está tocando a un alto nivel ahora. Los últimos álbumes fueron muy exitosos, y su producción en escena está mejorando cada vez más. ¡Los fanáticos definitivamente no deberían perderse este, ya que su ingeniera de iluminación Aline realmente hizo un trabajo asombroso aquí! Y, por supuesto, Dragony todavía “comparte” a nuestro bajista Herbert Glos con Visions of Atlantis también, ¡así que siempre hay una conexión, jaja! 

SS: ¡Absolutamente! What began in the summer of 2007 as a studio project conceived by a handful of enthusiastic Power Metal fans from Vienna, Austria, as “The Dragonslayer Project”, has long since become an established name in the international circus of metal. Dragony is now set to release their fifth studio album, “Hic Svnt Dracones” on October 11 under the prestigious Steamhammer/SPV record label. It was an excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk to Siegfried Samer, founder and vocalist of the band.

MiM: “Hic Svnt Dracones” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2024) is a gem of melodic power metal. Vocals, choirs, epic guitars, and impressive orchestral arrangements. What can you tell me about this album?

SS: Glad to hear you like it! We think it’s another big step forward for us after our previous album “Viribus Unitis”, which until now I considered our best album to date. But “Hic Svnt Dracones” manages to take all the strengths from “Viribus Unitis” and take it to another level. Both in terms of songwriting and individual performances, as well as on the production side of things, with mix and mastering from Jacob Hansen this time around. All in all, we think it turned out to be a very diverse album that combines both “old school” power metal in the vein of bands of the early 2000s like Rhapsody, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Edguy, Avantasia or Hammerfall. It also has a few more “modern” power metal-style songs on it, like the singles “Beyond the Rainbow Bridge” and “Twilight of the Gods”, which really work well in a live situation.

MiM: What was it like working with Jacob Hansen (Amaranthe, Epica, Sepultura among others)? Do you think that Jacob's work is essential to achieving an album as beautiful as this one?

SS: I absolutely think so, yes. We worked with Seeb Levermann from Orden Ogan on our previous album, and he did a fantastic job as well. When it became clear that he unfortunately would not be available for this album, we had to pivot last minute, and thankfully, a great like Jacob Hansen was available. He made sure that the album sounded as good as it did. He really has a great ear for all different types of metal, and he knows exactly what each song needs. It was a real pleasure working with him; we can’t recommend him enough!

MiM: Siegfried, this album is very remarkable for how good you are as a vocalist; it proves that you are in excellent condition. How do you manage to maintain that strength in your voice despite the years?

SS: Thanks for the friendly words! I also think that on “Hic Svnt Dracones” I was able to deliver my best vocal performance so far; I think this just comes with experience over the years and with improving on technique and more routine and practice. Actually, I had some vocal chord issues already back when we released our first album, “Legends,” in 2012, and I had vocal chord surgery back then as I had damaged my voice with bad technique and not taking enough care. Nowadays, I try to take much more care and always sing in a “relaxed” way so as not to damage the voice again. But since the surgery over ten years ago, I’ve not had any problems with my voice, thankfully!

SS: All in all, we are delighted with how long we’ve been able to do this and keep going as a band. We’ve also had a pretty stable lineup for the past ten years, and it was only now after “Viribus Unitis” that the lineup underwent some major changes. Mat is coming in as a new guitarist, and Chris is replacing our founding member Frederic on drums. Thankfully, both guys brought a lot of fresh energy into the band—I guess that’s because they are quite a bit younger than the rest of us, haha!

Of course, in terms of overall popularity, the band could be bigger after offering 15 years in the business, but considering some limitations we were facing in respecting the ability to tour a lot. Most of us have “regular” jobs and can’t go on tour for extended periods of time at once. We did pretty well for ourselves and can look back on some great memories, such as touring with Gamma Ray, playing Wacken and 70,000 Tons of Metal, and most recently, even doing a headline tour through Mexico in October 2023. We definitely can’t complain, haha!

MiM: Listening to the album, I feel a connection between all the songs. Is “Hic Svnt Dracones” a concept album? What are the songs about Lyrically Speaking?

SS: The new album is indeed another concept album, similar to the style we already had for the previous album “Viribus Unitis”, meaning that it’s an “alternate history” concept that combines real-life historical events with fantasy and mythology. The songs on the album all relate to different moments in the concept story. For example, the song “Dreamchasers” is told from the perspective of British privateer Sir Walter Raleigh, who receives a charter from Queen Elizabeth I. (whose role is performed by Ambre Vourvahis from Xandria on the album) to found a colony in the “New World”. It was in the late 16th century that Roanoke would become a colony, and it is the history of this Roanoke colony that the concept story of the album is based upon. Another song that comes later in the album is “Twilight of the Gods.” This song is told from the perspective of a Viking warrior, relating the events of the Ragnarök, the “end of days” in Norse mythology. MiM: “Hic Svnt Dracones” is a phrase used on ancient maps to refer to unexplored or dangerous territories, in accordance with the medieval practice of putting sea serpents and other mythological creatures on maps of unknown areas. Is that so? What is the concept behind the name of the album?

SS: That is correct! We used that phrase for three different reasons: Firstly is the reason you mentioned, in that it denotes “uncharted territories” on old sea maps. This relates to the start of our tale, when British privateer Sir Walter Raleigh receives his charter from Queen Elizabeth I to found a colony on the North American continent at the end of the 16th century. So this was largely still “uncharted territory” at the time. Secondly, the title was chosen as in our (fictional) story, the second colony of Roanoke, the infamous “Lost Colony,” disappears into a “land forgotten by time” in a Jules-Verne-inspired twist, where dinosaurs (so: dragons!) still live. It is in this “land before time” that the British colonists also meet Viking tribes who had suffered a similar fate over 1000 years prior when they sailed to North America. To top everything, this also sets in motion the events of “Ragnarök”, the Nordic “Twilight of the Gods”, which explains the images of Thundergod Thor fighting the World Serpent Jörmungandr on the cover artwork of the album. And finally, our band name is “Dragony”, and we’ve not really had dragons on our album covers or album titles yet despite our five studio albums, so I think it really was about time, haha!  

SS: Absolutely! This time we had the pleasure of working with Danish composer and arranger Lasse Elkjaer on the orchestration. He was a perfect fit for a concept story like “Hic Svnt Dracones”, as he really has a very “scenic” approach to every song, and adapted each orchestral arrangement very differently for each song or even parts of each song. So I think the orchestra really complements the rest of the band very well and takes the songs to another level.

MiM: Tell me about the experience of touring as a headliner in Mexico in 2023 and the tour with Warkings. How did the public and the band's fans receive them?

SS: Those were both really great experiences! With Mexico, it was really a surprise for us that this happened, as we got invited by a promoter to do a two-week tour there, and at first, we thought, Wait a minute, there has to be a catch somewhere? But it turned out the person was perfectly legit and really organized everything very well for us, and we had a fantastic experience, especially with the great fans in Latin America. We hope to be back some day, of course! And the tour with Warkings was also great fun, even though we were only able to join them on five shows of this tour. They are really a very fast-growing band, and we’ve been friends with them for many years (incidentally, they played their first-ever live show back in 2018 as the “special guest” for Dragony for our album release show for our third album, “Masters of the Multiverse”), and it’s great to see they are doing so well meanwhile. Hopefully, we’ll get to share the stage again with them in the future! I think Dragony and Warkings are a great musical fit.

MiM: Currently, how is your relationship with the members of Visions of Atlantis?

SS: Superb, I would say! I was just at the tour start of their big European headliner tour in Vienna this past Thursday, to check out the new production and set list and to say hello to the guys. The band is really performing at a high level now. The last albums were very successful, and their stage production is getting better and better—fans definitely shouldn’t miss this one, as their lighting engineer Aline really did an astonishing job here! And of course, Dragony still “shares” our bassist Herbert Glos with Visions of Atlantis as well, so there is always a connection, haha!

SS: Absolutely! We have a few shows lined up for late 2024, some of which support Freedom Call in the Czech Republic, and, of course, our album release show on December 7 in Vienna. But the major touring starts in early 2025, when we’ll do a two-week European tour together with Serious Black, and the good news is that we will also finally come to Spain!
